I'm the only "telemarketer" at my company (i.e., cold-caller) and still it's only about 10% of my day. The rest is running reports, doing research, preparing for calls, and the biggest chunk - doing demos.

Do you handle rejection well? Because cold calling is constant, unrelenting rejection. Sometimes personal and unusually cruel rejection. I called an idiot by a random prospect yesterday before he told me to stop bothering him.
That's just the beginning. Even if you're dealing with nice people, there's still a 95% failure rate on your cold calls. I always lol @ lawyers who complain that their brief "will never get read" or that a partner will mark it up. Big whoop. In cold calling sales, 95% of your effort will be for nothing. And in the middle of all this rejection, you somehow must keep a brave face and sharp mind and field any question that someone who MAY be intersted will ask you.
You've gotta be ready for anything at all times. And if your product is nothing special or you're competing in a crowded market, you have to know every single competitor's product inside and out, anticipate their responses to the holes you poke in the prospect's objections to your pitch.
Just getting them interested is like 10% of the battle. If they don't tell you no right away, you could still be months away from a an actual sale. Especially in my industry.
Add constant stress of people not signing. Having a bad month? Couldn't get the prospect to sign? You'll be losing sleep. Also, working with other salespeople is tough. They tend to be aggressive and unreleting as well. |
