some dude like baltimore mayor ferdinand latrobe was a big deal in national politics for years in the late-1800's. nancy pelosi's dad was baltimore's mayor and was also a big fucking deal on that account. now? LOL, nobody cares about the baltimore mayor. or philly, or richmond, or st. louis, or cleveland, or buffalo, etc.

city limit populations are way smaller relative to metro area populations than they used to be. also, urban mayors are pretty much all resolute democrats, making them a "captive" political market.
