Most RPGs are way too long for what they bring to the table, and they rely on lame dopamine tricks to get you addicted by watching numbers go up.
The best RPGs are games like Earthbound that aren't too long and constantly mix it up with weird content, or strategy RPGs like Fire Emblem where the actual game system is challenging and interesting.

a lot of them are, yeah. but not all of them. 1 out of a 100 will be interesting in some way, whether that is in story, unique gameplay elements, world-building and art design, technical achievement, etc. (bioshock, mass effect 1 and 2, a few of the final fantasy games, skyrim, witcher 3, original pokemon games). this isn't remarkable - its the same thing in books or film or music. most tv shows are bullshit but that doesnt make the entire medium a waste of time.
but if youre just talking about JRPGs/turn based leveling RPGs like bravely default, which i havent played, yeah... almost all of them are a huge waste a time. just a bunch of grind fests, and theyre all the same game over and over again.

if your concept of RPGscomes from mainline jRPGs like final fantasy, bad hiking simulators like the elder scrolls, or skinnerbox trash like diablo, then yeah, rpgs would seem like a total waste of time.
but there are plenty of games that manage to either deliver a compact, focused experience (original fallout stands out as the best example) or create enough good content to justify a 25+ hour campaign (e.g. baldur's gate 2 or SMT: nocturne).

it's hard to make a top 10 because of how dissimilar RPG subgenres can be.
if you want a fallout-like, a game all about different experiences for different character builds and a lot of open-ended gameworld design, the first fallout is probably the best. it has a slow start, but the least bloat. games that followed, like the fallout 2, arcanum, and new vegas tended to have a lot more "here be monsters" combat areas, none of which played well within the combat systems of these games, but let the developers boast of longer playtime in gaming propaganda rags.
you'd probably want to go:
-fallout 1
-fallout 2
-arcanum
-new vegas
given that you didn't like dragon age: origins, i'm not sure if i'd recommend a D&D-based game; they're all just about crawling around in dungeons and killing things, and aren't categorically different from da:o. they do have much better area/encounter design, far fewer trash encounters (which made no sense in dragon age given regenerating health/mana, but i digress), and the core systems aren't as MMO-ish, for lack of a better term (more emphasis on positioning in battle and management of limited resources per rest).
for d&d-likes, you probably want to try:
-baldur's gate 1 & 2 (while 2 is much better, it does presume some familiarity with d&d and the game engine)
-knights of the chalice
-dark sun: shattered lands
-the krynn trilogy (champions, death knights, dark queen
-pool of radiance and curse of the azure bonds
-maybe icewind dale
you've got wizardry-style dungeon crawlers. these are an acquired taste, and i probably can't recommend them to someone repulsed by typical jRPGs. good ones aren't grindy, per se, but they do focus strongly on combat and labyrinthine dungeons to the exclusion of everything else. fun if you like it, but this sort of monomania might grate on others.
if you're willing to try, then shin megami tensei: nocturne or wizardry: tale of the forsaken land might be decent intros.
then there are the games that are genre hybrids or games that defy categorization. stuff like gothic/risen, dragon's dogma, way of the samurai, vampire: bloodlines, jagged alliance 2, breath of fire: dragon quarter, paper mario, barkley shut up and jam gaiden...some interesting stuff here, but hard to recommend without more info.

i love planetescape: tournament, and master chris avellone, but it's hard to recommend to someone who would probably rather read a book. it's basically a western spin on the visual novel, but with more stats and adventure game elements. there is combat, but because of crunch time hitting early, it is extremely rough, and best avoided.
i like it a lot, find the setting fascinating, and think it does do some interesting things as far as interactive storytelling goes, but i'm not certain how a (cynical) mid-late 20's me would rwact to the melodrama and phil 101 that pervades the game, and that matters when recommending it.

i just bought witcher 3 for ps4, haven't played it (or 1 and 2) before.
am I about to kiss 60+ hours of my life goodbye?
