The ferocity with which he pivoted from precedent to precedent spread astonished silence across the crowd. In thirty seconds, he orally synthesized fourteen separate appellate rulings, tracing a golden thread of meaning from the chaos of judges' disparate reasonings. I saw an aged lawyer in the upper tier of the theatre begin to weep; three young women swooned and fell to the floor; the mayor of the town himself nearly collapsed, only saved by a sweet salve of rose water and lemon tincture and the fanning of his cavaclade of youthful attendants.
I've never forgotten that day or that man. He died twelve years from the date of this Great Exam, so they say. But I was at that funeral and no coffin was lowered to wormy ground, for his widow claimed he preferred his ashes be scattered across the floor of the Wren Library that they might mingle in the footsteps of the young scholars setting out on the selfsame journey he took so many years ago. I harbor doubt that he has in fact expired; that he is not even now working the great levers of the common law from some high unnatural machined and piped perch within the firm which continues to bear his name. |
