We are a Toyota family but the Rav4 has fallen like WUSTL in the USNWR rankings (not flame):

https://cars.usnews.com/cars-trucks/rankings/compact-suvs/grid/overall

Is the Honda CR-V the new POTUS of this class? Is the Mazda CX-5 a legit top 3 compact SUV or just gaming the rankings like UChicago? What the fuck is a GMC?

USNWR does not consider the Outback to be a compact SUV. It considers the Subaru Forester to be the compact SUV and does not rank it highly.

The base model 2018 Outback does have a cam though.

do not do this. trust me. you will hate yourself if you get a compact SUV.

don't test with the infant car seat. you need to test with the convertible car seat, because that's where the kid will be after 6-12 months, for a period of years thereafter.

there are a lot of youtube videos showing car seats installed in various cars, that can help.

it doesn't make much difference for the kid. just depends on how much front seat legroom you want/need. the farther back you move it starts to push the baby seat up. actually, big suvs with 3rd rows aren't much better because they don't really have all that much more room in the middle row. big boat sedans with massive back seats are probably the best for that though you'll end up banging the kids' heads on the door frame more often than you should.

This isn’t really true. Car seats are easier to put into SUVs because they ride higher than most sedans and you don’t have to awkwardly bend over. That goes for putting children in rear or from facing seats.

We have one kid with rear facing car seat (over 2 but keeping him rear facing as long as possible for safety) in a compact suv and can confirm it is no better than a sedan and no extra space. Forget 2 kids.

You have a Tiguan, not a Touareg. I was fearing you were trading in the shitty VW for a bigger shit VW, it the truth is even worse :(

So sedan is dead and you are going to have a big suv and a small non 4wd suv? Get a cayenne or something. You are rich.

Yeah I meant Tiguan. The tourareg is really expensive if you want keyless and other shit. I like the Volvo XC90 but the model I want is over $65k. All suvs are super pricey esp if you want 4wd. Cayenne would be stupid.

We hope to one day be blessed with the need to have two rear facing car seats in the same car. My wife can't believe that a Rav4 would not be able to do this.

That's not really true, they just aren't good for all use cases. If you're a DINK couple that needs something with some ground clearance, decent performance, some space for road trips (but not too much space), etc. then it works really well. And they're cheaper than full sized equivalents and better on gas. For example, the Mercedes GLC and Porsche Macan vs. Mercedes GLE and Porsche Cayenne. I'm going with the latter but that's because wife + dog + possible child(ren).

1. it's a hyper-competitive segment. anything in the top half of a synthesis of the major rankings will be good because they are all fighting to maximize that cuv/little suv dollar.

2. i think the old gmc terrain was shit, pure shit. my sister bought the new one and it's really nice. worth a test drive if you're in that segment.

yeah, i know. i don't own one either.

seriously though car seats are fucking huge. safest is for them to be fully reclined, rear facing, so they're long as fuck. also it's unsafe for the top of the car seat to touch the back of the seat in front of it, you need 1-2" clearance. i underestimated how big they are, and it's the single most important thing.

not flame I looked into this for several hours last weekend. My GF wants a compact SUV (only thing she wants, has to be small). WEnt to Carmax with her and sat in like every make and model out there across all price ranges (I actually liked the Murano interior of the lower cost cars).

Then we went to the Honda dealership and test drove a decked out HRV. It was surprisingly nice and she loved it. Tons of legroom in the back seat.

I have a sedan, a crv, a minivan and 2 kids. Sedan is the worst for car seats. Crv sits higher than sedan, which is nice on back, but interior is no bigger than sedan. Minivan is the goat potus and my primary choice anytime I have to take the kids somewhere.

You don't want to do rear facing behind driver unless you're short; forward facing behind driver is ok, except for kicking. Can't fit a car seat in middle if you have two seats, so middle is empty, but not enough room for an adult there (ie two kids two adults tops). Since crv sits high, you're not bending over as much to strap them in. But good luck if they throw a toy or bottle into the middle because the only way to get it is to reach over the car seat.

spend $15-20K on a CPO toyota/lexus fullsize SUV instead, especially since you don't have to care that much about fuel economy in light of recent trends in oil production (colt can explain the long term trends better, but suffice to say USA is on top again, while bitchboi putin and sad saudis are getting pwned)
