Bloggers linking to US News PDF without citing xo -- unethical?

Date: March 28th, 2006 7:07 PM Author: fiercely-loyal piazza ceo just a few days ago some of these bloggers were whining about the AP getting news tips from bloggers and then not citing them in the news report. now some of these guys go and link to the US News PDF and rankings without linking to xo or even saying xo got the rankings first. unethical?

EDIT: I take everything back about Orin Kerr, he's a genuinely nice guy.

i can easily see how a reader here would email a link to a friend who posted a link on a student forum where a reader saw it and emailed the link to a professor. how many of you are linking your friends with cites attached? |

The folks at U.S. News always manage to change the numbers around just enough so that the rankings change and you need to buy the magazine to find out the latest. This year is no exception.

(Not that "some guy" couldn't make a good blog too, I'm sure.) Anyway, I've thought about it, but again I find the format too self-serving. I'd rather post stuff and let people talk about it to each other than to me. I like to read Slashdot for this reason, but even those editors don't always resist the urge to, well, editorialize.
Anyway what I would really like is for this (or another) message board to just be a good source of this info in general, and if everybody pitched in I could just sit back and consume it like everybody else. |

I find this comment thread a bit bizzare. Dan wasn't claiming to be the first person to lay his eyes on the rankings -- and was clear about where he got them. We aren't a reporting or news service here. Good for you for having discussed the rankings earlier today; we're just posting them for the benefit of readers who don't read "xoxohth," whatever that is.
