I think people tend to make their friends a little earlier in life there than in some larger cities.
It's not much like New York. It's a different kind of city layout, vastly smaller, etc. I don't know Chicago well enough to comment.

It's not a melting pot. Most have lived there for their entire lives and have had friends since before the 8th grade.
They aren't mean, they are more european when it comes to making friends.
Once you make them, they coudln't be nicer.

yup.
I've lived in London and MSP. "Sorry" really means F-You in most cases.
The only difference between London and MSP, other than the accent, is tater-tot hot dish.

I grew up in a suburb of Minny, so here are my comments.
1. it is gorgeous in the summer, awful in the winter
2. the girls are unbelievably hot
3. cost of living is moderate
4. traffic sucks
5. downtown minneapolis is nice, almost like a small chicago. st. paul is older, but nice as well
6. minnesota nice is a misnomer. people are pretty reserved and passive aggressive

OMG...yes. Passive agressive is the key!
I forgot about that.

Very. In the cities, it's very open minded. 30 minutes out, however...
This explains their anti-gay marriage amendments...
Hmong and whites don't mix, though. Neither do the Somalis, to come to think of it.

Very different cultures...not a lot of social interaction.
I can't think of seeing Hmongs out anywhere. American blacks are all over the place on Hennepin and whatnot, the Hmongs and Somalis keep to themselves, for some reason.

Okay, I'll bite. I'm from Minneapolis. I believe it's a peculiar city.
It's a great place to live, but I think it would take a while to grow on you. It's a bit different from most other midwestern cities I've been to. If anything, it might be more like cities in Canada or the pacific northwest, in that it has a huge population of white liberals and lots of young people, many of whom have drug problems.
St. Paul is a different story. It looks more like an old industrial midwestern city like Milwaukee or Cleveland. It's smaller and people in Mpls don't go there much, although it has a couple yuppieish areas.
Southwest Minneapolis is where most of the well-off liberal white folks stay. It's decidedly different from much of the rest of the city. Northeast Minneapolis is becoming gentrified too, but much more recently, and it still has a rougher feel.
Downtown is weird compared to most other cities. It seems like one big corporate office park where all the buildings are connected by skyways so people don't have to walk in the cold.
Passive-aggressiveness is a very refined trait in Minnesotans, especially older ones. Middle-aged women are the worst. Some girls are pretty but they can be very midwestern, as in stodgy and dumb. There are a lot of fat people who look like cows, but not as many as in Wisconsin.
The suburbs have a lot of truck-driving hicks. A lot of suburbanites, especially from the far northern suburbs, really hate city people, liberals and brown people. There are more genteel suburbs too, like Edina, which is a well-off inner-ring suburb like Evanston (Chicago) or Shaker Heights (Cleveland).
All in all, not much to complain about. I love Minneapolis. Rent a nice apartment or part of an older house in uptown and you will love it too.

I've been there one time. And they have white girls with the biggest booties I've ever seen on white girls before. It was a shocking experience.

I'm black. So I know a big booty when I see one. I was in Mall of America and it was literally teeming with white girls with big booties. I was there with a black friend at the time, and he noticed it too.
I haven't been to too many places in the US really so factor that into your calculus or whatever...

yep, minnesota girls tend to be tall, curvy, and skinny. i don't know how it is physically possible, but i can't complain.

I've lived in Minnesota for a bit before.
The girls are pretty good (especially if you like blondes) but for the most part they really have no sense of style at all (ie, sweatshirt s and sweat pants).
Minneapolis is kinda cool (I enjoyed the fact that a shitload of good bands play at first avenue etc) but a bit overblown by the locals. The clubbing/drinking scene in my opinion totally sucks compared to places like miami, london, nyc.
AZN - Incidentally, I bought a computer from an asian guy in st. paul who had a white girl friend (a bit pudgy..then again I like them kinda stick thin). He graduated was clean cut doctor who graduated from u mich.
Overall, a good place to raise children but I wouldn't really want to live there as a young man.
There is that "minnesota nice" but definitely underlying racism. The best people from the midwest are iowans.

I am in MN for now, I grew up in a state where they say bubbler. Things I've noticed:
1) I don't think traffic is worse than most cities. I went to college in Milwaukee and I thought traffic there was worse, but that could be the fact they were tearing up the highway next to my university, and the fact that I live in a pretty close suburb to the city now. I also take the bus to classes because it goes in the HOV lane and is faster and then I don't have to pay for parking downtown.
2) Minnesota nice is not a myth. People are VERY friendly once you become close to them, but not so much outwardly - they'll be polite, but it's two-faced, like the "bless her heart" crap in the south. I turned off a lot of my classmates by telling them I didn't plan to stay here.
3) I don't know that women here are naturally prettier than girls anywhere else in the midwest, but they certainly seem to put more effort into themselves. This is particularly true for girls who work at Target.
4) People are REALLY rude about commenting about accents. I hear about my Wisconsin accent 2-3x a week - I wouldn't think that is something worth talking about up here.
5) Everything up here seems to be 10% or so more expensive than it is in Milwaukee. I'm sure it's still cheap relative to most parts of the country, but it was a surprise for me. However, there is no sales tax on clothes, which is SWeet.
6) People NEVER LEAVE here. I am shocked at all the people who grew up in the suburbs, went to college in the Cities, and stayed here for law school because they don't want to leave. I love where I'm from but I think you should at least try something else.
7) People seem to get married really young - most of my friends are classmates and I am at a religious school but I am shocked at the number of 1Ls who are married.
