I'll have about a million in my operating account by the end of next month. I'm sending out a demand per day now, so money is coming in like crazy.

Taking suggestions on some things to buy/write off (within reason, I want to still keep most to invest). I already bought sick computers for my entire office last year, finally leased a decent car, write off my cell/internet/cable/auto insurance, donate money to the Zoo and Natural history museum, and do a nice dinner once per month on the company card. Give me some other stuff to write off.

I don't. It's not worth the small write off for the increased audit risk. Especially since I have a real office I pay rent to also.

You don't need to track miles if you just write off your lease. I claim 75% driving for work because we have a second car and I live only 2 miles from my office and work mostly from home.

Furniture doesn't really make sense. My staff works at my house and I never meet clients. Plus my home office already has comfortable office chairs and motorized stand-up desks. So not much to buy.

As far as stock the kitchen, I guess I could do that.

I know people who write off all their trips which I think is dumb. Still there’s tons of legal conferences you can pop into all over the country. Could be great biz dev as well. I’m also on the solo path. Do you think s corp is worth it? Right now I make 250k.

California taxes s-corps at 1.5%, but what about the federal self employment tax? you pay 12.4% up to $127.2k in salary, and an additional 2.9% with no cap. compare that against 1.5% on the s-corp dividend income at the state level.

The real juicy savings are below the 127k, setting my salary lower than this at 250k earnings would be risky. also in addition to the 1.5 there’s 800 a year filing fee.

$800 is a minimum tax. if your 1.5% is over $800, it's just the 1.5%. that's not a filing fee.

what do you mean setting your salary below $250K is risky? what would you pay an associate to do what you do? $50K, right? if you're really risk adverse set it at $75K. you're still saving money.

sounds like your CPA doesn't know wtf he is doing.

That's not the test. The question is how much profit is due to your labor and how much to your management. If it would cost you a full 250k to replace yourself and it's a one man shop, might be you're right (though you can always get away with SOME dividend). But if you could hire a more or less competent lawyer for 100k, and especially if you have associates and paralegals billing clients, then you can claim and defend a larger dividend.

Downside is you also won't max out social security then. If it is still around when you retire, you'll get a lot less.

I'm not huge into cars. My wife and I had a Hyundai Tucson we shared for 6 years. We finally got our own cars 6 months ago. I got a 330i and she got an X3 because we have a baby now. Total lease payments are only about 800 between the two. And that still is way more than I like spending on cars.

Not write offs but your kid and future kid(s) get $2100 of investment income at their tax rate so you can shelter some investment income that would otherwise be taxed at 23.8% with them in a UTMA accounts. If you don’t want to leave much money with them at 18 in that account (which I don’t), put it in a high yield stock or bond index fund yielding 3-4% and spend from that on their expenses (anything is fine, soccer lessons, braces, preschool etc).

Also once your kids are a reasonable age (like 7), make them w2 employees in your business. Because they are your kids, you DO NOT pay FICA on their wages and you can write off the expenses. Furthermore, thhey They pay taxes at their tax rates. Win win for everyone.

Yes employing your young children in family business is perfectly legal and not subject to labor laws (unless your family business is something dangerous like mining).

However this has be a family business like a LLC where one or both parents are the only members. This is why people start a family LP and then “pay” their kids to paint the house. For a law business, his young children can do stuff like cleaning the office and filing. In reality you control any money you pay them so it’s just a tax sheltering strategy.

http://xoxohth.com/thread.php?thread_id=1926338&mc=28&forum_id=2

Which is not the one I was thinking of, there was another longer and more recent poast that I remember included captive insurance among maybe 10 strategies, but I can't find that one... this is the one I had bookmarked. I encourage you to seek real counsel before employing any strategies in that thread, I think most of them are liable to get you fucked.

It's the subject of a nationwide coordinated audit program. It's still great for large companies and also for smaller companies that have real, substantial insurance costs and/or losses (medical stop loss, worker's comp, etc.) but the low frequency, high severity coverages that many were using to reduce taxes are getting fucked in the ass. All that kind of stuff is now formally a Transaction of Interest. Google Notice 2016-66 and 2017-08. Then google "Avrahami captive insurance," where the taxpayer took it right in the ass in tax court. Those were bad facts but no way a law firm that works out of its owner's house has the kind of actuarial risk necessary to generate anywhere NEAR the kinds of premiums these captive owners want to pay (and deduct). The jig is up on that kind of shit and the IRS is thirsty for blood.

This is a pretty untested area, but I have seen some good presentations by reputable lawyers/accountants on having trusts become owners of your business to get that pass through deduction.

I think you got one young kid. You could have a trust for them setup.

You could also likely do something with your parents.

Lots of young tech Bros who hit it big, unmarried and no kids doing estate/tax planning With trust structures involving their parents.

If you aren't doing S Corp LOL
