That's a hard question, actually. In full discolsure, I definitely didn't excel in law school - I was right in the middle of the class.

I guess in undergrad I was motivated both by being broke all the time and hating my retail job, and by being genuinely interested in what I was studying.

I think a lot of people here maybe need to take things one step at a time - there are a lot of people who seem to already be judging what law firms are good enough for them when they don't even have an LSAT yet. Focusing on more immediate concerns might be a better use of energy. (I could be more specific if it were narrowed to a particular topic, like getting a firm job or whatever).

Besides being interested in ug what do you account for your academic success. How did you handle the work/course load, balance work and social life, and get to know profs enough to get a stellar rec.

I was pretty good about distributing my courses fairly evenly. I tried to take classes that were hard for me in the same semester as a bunch of fluff, got all of the hard stuff out of the way before I was a senior, that kind of thing. I usually studied during the break between classes and work in undergrad, and I'm a good crammer who functions well under pressure towards the end of the semester. Also, I majored in something easy.

Balancing work and social life...I had a really weird social life when I was an undergrad, so I'm not sure this would transfer over to anyone else. I dated a way older guy, hung out with him and his friends, and didn't socialize that much with my classmates. It gave me a lot of time to do homework on weeknights, though in retrospect it was more the behavior of a girl headed for trouble than someone who did well.

I went to a little college, so getting to know profs wasn't much of a challenge.

I guess I generally go for fairly outgoing guys - I need someone who can draw me out of my shell a bit. Having read a decent book or seen a different movie recently and being able to say what he liked about it can be a good sign. Being interested in what's going on in my life and supportive of it - one of the things that impressed me about my current boyfriend is that he was actually kind of interested in the tedium involved with studying for the bar. Being willing to introduce me to his friends is a good sign. Um, I'm not sure what else.

No work. I stayed late last night so that I could have the weekend to myself.

Do you have any plans for the weekend besides the TV purchase? Big TVs are awesome, btw, I love mine.

what kind of TV did you get? How much do you pay for phone/cable/internet?

I have an lcd projection. I pay ~$110 for cable/internet. I'm anti-landline, so no phone.

I am also anti-landline - looking at package deals. I guess time warner is about all there is. do you have the HD-DVR and HDTV package?

How big is you LCD projection? I am still debating between a 50 inch DLP and a 42 inch plasma, but leaning towards the latter since my place is small and a walkup (I dont want to carry 200 pounds of DLP).

I have RCN, which has a very similar HD-DVR and HDTV package. DVR is definitely worth the money if you're a lawyer. Apparently the previous tenant screwed over Time Warner, and they refused to deal with me unless I went to their offices with ID.

Mine is 42 - I figured that a 50 inch screen would be so big that it might not fit in future apartments. But don't carry it upstairs - have it delivered!

Yes, you have a chance. I wouldn't suggest applying there and only there, but it's a realistic low-reach/high-target.

Harvard takes a ton of people from all of those schools, so I don't think it will hurt you. The undergrad plus probably more than compensates for the GPA-inflating minus.

It's maybe a little more normal among younger people than it is for people the age of you and your boyfriend. Do you want to have this discussion? (I guess it seems to me like you'd have to if you're going to be graduating this year.)

I'm a 1L so stuck in Charlottesville for 2 more years. I'm apathetic about having the discussion for its own sake but after a year and a half am wondering how it just hasn't come up yet.

Perhaps when I get closer to graduating, if we're still together, the discussion will be more relevant.

Though, I guess I have been hinting that 2L OCI is coming up and I'm going to have to pick a city in which to work. Maybe that'll spark conversation this summer when I have to start signing up for interviews.

I'm guessing it hasn't come up because 1) you haven't brought it up and 2) circumstances haven't forced him to consider it yet. I think that in a lot of relationships, that ends up being something the girl does. If you don't care about it just yet, might as well leave well enough alone until you have to start signing up for interviews.

Depends what they are. I usually buy the conventional wisdom that good, but not exceptional, soft factors will be a big help if you're at the margins and no help at all at schools where your numbers wouldn't otherwise get you in.

A good internship or doing research would look good on a resume. If you haven't taken the LSAT yet, you might want to spend some summer time prepping - extra study time never hurts when it comes to that.
