I'm a black woman. I used to think that making fun of white people was okay. Then in college I sat down and thought about how I would feel if I heard those very same "jokes" about me. I thought about how my white friends would feel if I said that to them. I thought about all the times I was called a slur or was treated rudely or unfairly because of my skin color. And I thought about how little "well, it's different because of some historical context" would make me, a person living in the present, feel about words said to me in the here and now. So instead of being intellectually dishonest and coming up with some excuse for my behavior, I wised up and stopped. And I've been actively encouraging others to stop.
This campaign to redefine racism to have it only include its institutional form and not its personal one is little more than a campaign by some to excuse their own bigoted thinking. "I'm saying and doing the same thing those racists over there are, but because of my skin color I can only be some lessor form of bigot". Sorry, that doesn't fly. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

You don't have to be conservative ( I am not) to find Jeong's comments disturbing. She has a basic problem here and neither she nor the NYT seem to get it. It's not that hard. The reason we don't write, for example, that black [brown, etc substitute any group you like] people are criminals because a black guy committed a crime is because we get that he's not representative of every other black person. This is the kind of "golden rule" ( do unto others ...) principle your parents teach you when you are small. For this reason, the stuff in the article about how she was harassed online is irrelevant. There's an element of the online community that is disgusting. Do we really think that means all people are disgusting? (The correct answer is "no.") Likewise, Prof. Cabrera, quoted in the article, is totally off base. This has nothing to do with "contextualizing," or other nonsense. The reason to not write what Jeong wrote is that you're supposed to get that you don't want it said about you (or your people). (Cabrera is also just wrong when he says, incredibly given the amount fo press coverage given to the phenomena, that whiteness isn't a cultural identity. It is for some and it appears that one reason some people identify this way is exactly because of sentiments expressed by Jeong and Cabrera who thinks it's all ok.)
I have no idea whether NYT should have hired Jeong. That has to do with how much you want to hold folks responsible for things they wrote 4 years ago and whether you think her comments were serious or simply sarcastic (or funny) and, if the latter, are you're going to extend the same tolerance to people who make the same sort of comments about minorities? What I do know is that plenty of ordinary people who are not the conservatives will see Jeong's comments and not get why it's ok for her to say this stuff but not for everyone else. And they'll be right.

The problem with the arguments defending her is that they assume all white people are the same and all Asians are the same. As a south Asian myself, I know that in high school I didn’t get invited to many of the parties that my white counterparts did and experienced the giggles and turned noses of white girls if I ever thought about talking to them. But I also know that today I make more money than most of my white counterparts, and therefore I have the responsibility not to promote hatred against people who are currently less in a position of power.
Granted there are those who who argue that if I were white and had my similar abilities and drive I would be making even more money and would be sitting two levels higher in any organization. That might be true but that is assuming that I am part of the Chevy Chase country club set. If I grew up in a trailer park in southern Ohio, my fate might be different.
My parents immigrated to this country because the structure created by the white people here has allowed them a greater chance of success than that created by the South Asians in their country. Therefore, I refuse to take part in denigrating any race, including white people. At least a writer for The NY Times should be able appreciate that.

To condemn an entire group for the actions of a few is racist regardless of the groups cultural identity or status. I'm an "old white man" who does not hold any of the views or engage in actions that she identified and condemned in her posts. Sorry, but racism and hatred are not defined by the group attacked.

I have said before no one should be automatically fired for a few tweets sent years ago. We have become an incredibly judgmental society, completely intolerant, willing to ruin people over minor gaffes on social media. Even in the case of something that expresses racism, this drive through approach to justice is not right. People can and should continue to learn and grow throughout their lives, and this may well include their attitude toward race, prejudice and discrimination.
Nevertheless, this writer should face some discipline if a writer who had said similar tweets in the past about Asian people would have been subject to discipline. It is not okay to make fun of people for being white, or any race. Just because you are white doesn't mean you don't have feelings. As a person with very pale, white skin, I have often been subjected to teasing about my "whiteness". It may not be systematic discrimination, but it is hurtful and humiliating aimed at a person's looks, and one that they can't really do anything about. So this is just as bad as teasing someone for being ugly or having a big nose, or being overweight. It shouldn't be considered okay, but it also shouldn't mean automatic dismissal from a job. People make mistakes, does this writer still have this attitude. Make her attend sensitivity training.

this is why the libs are gonna lose this one right here.
libs have been able to get pretty far on stuff when they could frame it in terms of fundamental fairness, fair/equal treatment etc (like gay marriage ... SHOULD PEOPLE BE DENIED RIGHTS TO LOVE WHO THEY WANT OMG?!)
But libs are on the other side of that fundamental fairness divide here. Their higher-reaches-of-academia-provenanced galaxy-brained cultural marxist pretzel-logic about institutional racism being the only racism is running up against people's sense of basic kindergarden morality.
could be a defining moment for leftism in the US here. will they turn back from the brink or descend into a full, snarling racist hate group that must be defeated like the Nazis? early signs not encouraging
