It was much closer to current conditions than that of the 70s/80s
Still had more of the good qualities of the old era, though: lots of interesting stores, plenty of cheap restaurants and take-out options. Rent was expensive as fuck, but not as insanely out of control everywhere

"Williamsburg" and "Bushwick" did not exist in any sense of the way they do now.
Rough AF areas. Williamsburg was low income dangerous + Jews and Bushwick was Latin/shootings.
Many parts of Manhattan that are now extremely boughie (like west Chelsea by highline) were more industrial/derelict.
The city had experienced a vast resurgence but the wildfire of gentrification had only just begun.
It still had a luster of cool grittiness that I wish it still had, the last flames of which started to be stomped out during Bloomberg's first reign.
