How? They basically tag along with Bush whenever he does anything retarded just so they can pretend they still have an empire.
As for any other measure of prestige, Oxford is FAR beneath Harvard in TTT-ness. And the degree of pretentiousness makes popping your collar look downright democratic.

For 2300 of those years, England was the Cooley of Europe.
As for what nation the English should tag along with, they'd be better off admitting they're worthless the way all of Old Europe besides France did long ago.

True, but then we saved civilization from the Germans, the Japanese, and the Russians, occupied an overseas empire and rebuilt it in our own image (I mean Germany and Japan, not Iraq).
The English, on the other hand, sent a few traders to India and claimed that it was part of their empire. The Raj was a load of shit. Oh, and they tried to force Egypt to give them back the Suez Canal in the 1950s only to be pwn3d by...oh yeah, AMERICA FUCK YEAH

The Russians did a lot more to stop Germany than the US ever did. The US only fought Japan because they were dumb enough to bomb the US. The Soviet Union was never a serious threat to the World. For most of the Cold War, the US was the USSR's bitch in spite of a vastly superior economy.
I should mention Korea, Vietnam, and Iraq. Those were amazing wars. The US likes losing to TTT countries.

Korea -- militarily we kicked ass in that war. MacArthur had already conquered all Korea and was about to deal with China as well until Truman stabbed him in the back.
Ok, so, Vietnam didn't really work out. As for Iraq, whose fault is the ENTIRE MIDDLE EAST today?? Oh yeah, BRITAIN. Read up on your post-WWI history.

Kind of pathetic that the US was in an arms race with such a TTT nation. This never should have happened.
"Korea -- militarily we kicked ass in that war. MacArthur had already conquered all Korea and was about to deal with China as well until Truman stabbed him in the back."
It was not as bad as Iraq or Vietnam, but North Korea still fell to the Commies.

Korea -- yeah, fell to the commies because of Truman. Not because we hadn't already won the war.
Israel -- actually their initial backers were...ENGLAND. But Iraq specifically was a pure British creation. Great job they did too.

"Exactly, the USSR was a complete TTT. Our voters/politicians got irrationally worried...so, your point is??"
You claimed that the US saved the world from Germany, Japan, and Russia (USSR). A lot of countries won the war against Germany, Japan was probably screwed anyway after Germany fell, and the USSR was too much of a TTT to matter. None of these wins gave the US much prestige.
"Korea -- yeah, fell to the commies because of Truman. Not because we hadn't already won the war."
It doesn't matter how it happened. It only matters that it did. Truman was a US president. That is important.
"Israel -- actually their initial backers were...ENGLAND. But Iraq specifically was a pure British creation. Great job they did too."
I think we can agree that a lot of countries screwed up the middle-east. It was not just a British problem.

WWII -- agreed, we had a lot of help. But, if the Russians had occupied Japan, their infantry would have raped everyone and then set up a bigger version of North Korea. Thanks to MacArthur and USA, none of this happened.
Middle East -- yeah, how can you not screw up when the groundwork for the region (mandates etc) was laid in such a shitty fashion?

You've never seen and English village, have you?
Rural England is very different from rural America (or Russia or most other places). For starters, there's quite a lot of money in rural England. Manors, great estates, large farms. In part because of that, a decent bit of culture and polite society exists in rural England that one can't find in the US, with the exception of certain parts of New England.

*rolls eyes*
Your post just shows how ignorant you are of the English countryside. Seeing one or two places just outside London hardly counts as a representation of rural England as seeing one or two quaint New England towns a representation of rural America.
There is no, and I repeat, no similarity between most American small towns and English villages.

Ever been to Scotland or Cumbria or the Peak district? Trust me, rural England very much exists (oh, maybe not on the lines of Montana, but then again most of rural America isn't as extreme as Montana, and actually, much of Montana and Wyoming is unbelievably boring and monotonous).
England is no doubt a small island, but the sheer variety of countryside within such a restricted area can be very impressive.

Why do you say that? For starters, the country (its population regardless of certain political leaders) have long held a pro-palestinian bent.
There is a huge community of rich Arabs living in London, which you do not find in America at all. And large communities of ex-pat Brits living in parts of the middle east, mostly in connection with the oil industry.
I won't deny that there have been incidents, especially between working class English chavs and yobs, and the immigrant, mostly Paki, muslim community. But upper class England and its finance community have long worked with the rich arab nations.

America's entire upper class "works" with rich Arab nations. We even hold hands with them on nationally-televised news reports. That doesn't equal good relations, though.
Until Bush, our Arabs all voted Republican. So, at least they VOTED like they were prosperous.
Cowering in barbed-wire-enclosed oil compounds is also not the same thing as "living" in a country.
PS I love chavs

Muslins blew up the world trade center. Much more impressive than the London subway bombing (Bin Laden hasn't targeted London so far, it was the work of an isolated group of people).
The UK isn't hated widely just because a few ignorant muslims blew up a subway and a bus in London (I was actually in London on that day)-America is. Go to the middle east. Look at all the protestors. What flags are they defacing? Whose political leaders are they denouncing in effigy? For every Union Jack you'll find a thousand American flags. Actually, reports coming out of Iraq all consistently reveal that the Iraqi like the British soldiers far better than the American soldiers, in part because the former treats the Iraqi much better than the latter.
The Iraq war is hugely, and I mean hugely, unpopular in Britain. It almost completely discredited Tony Blair and he's been crippled because of the unpopularity of the war.

actually, when the brits rotated the black watch north into baghdad for a little while to cross-train with the americans, ragheads promptly blew up four of them.

The reason people burn American flags is because *NEWSFLASH* we're a SUPERPOWER.
Nobody gives a shit about England enough to buy their flag and then burn it.

Well, the point was that the mid east doesn't hate the English to the degree that America is hated.
The mid-east certainly burned enough Dannish flags.

Should we be proud of our McDonalds and Hollywood movies? No doubt much of the world eagerly consumes certain key American products, but it is rather arrogant to call Western Europe a cultural colony of the USA, especially when the American intellegentsia is still in thralls with European high culture.
My grandfather, a conservative republican who is in his nineties, believes America has been colonised by its own mass culture and industries.

Spent any time in New York? Educated Americans with a bent towards the arts is what I call the intelligentsia in this country, and they're quite a sizeable group of people mostly concentrated in the large cities. College professors also tend to fall into this group. My father is a professor and while he isn't an anglophile (thanks to having lived in England), most of his peers at Hopkins are always going over to Europe every summer to go to operas and museums and theatres.
Has a great opera been produced in America? What great artistic tradition is coming out of the states these days?
For the English I'll offer BBC, even in its current condition, which produces movies that are on the whole of a higher bent than America's hollywood. And British stage is regarded without peer. Most European countries (far more so than England) heavily subsidize their artistic tradition, and you may sneer at them, but there's no denying a tremendous and rich artistic tradition and heritage exists in Europe that is better appreciated by its population than in the States.

of course I've been to new york. one side of my family is from that town. there's enough money to buy trophies that give a veneer of 'culture', but it is no more than that, a thin layer disguising the same gaudy tastes that you find everywhere in the lower 48.
i've heard bad rap in german, hungarian, french... i'm not saying it is a good thing, but american crap culture dominates europe. much as the musc of rossini was inescapable around the globe in the 19th century, so has american popular music dominated european tastes since WW1. as for the BBC - please. i remember staring with disbelief at british TVs with all of 4 channells as a child... pathetic, really.

i was more or less joking, but each western european country seems to still have some recognizable feature of its culture that makes it french, or english, whatever....While the popular culture is really dominated by the US, there's still a lot that they offer with regards to sport, music, and the history and lifestyle from one country to another seems different as well
this could all be bullshit though, I've never gotten the chance to travel to any of these places and see what it's really like

I have lived in Britain and have family in Britain.
The English middle classes (by which they mean the upper middle classes) are quite a friendly, educated, knowledgeable group of people, and more "aware" of current events than the corresponding American social class. It's rather hard to meet the real English because they aren't the warmest people, but once you do it can completely change your perception of the country.
However, England suffers from having a large population of boorish working class chavs. Some aren't bad, especially those in rural areas, but the ones in the city are almost enough to drive any reasonable person away from England.
And I also find frustrating the English obsession with national decline, which is rather ironic for several reasons. One, they certainly do have one of the most prosperous economies in Europe and the world (especially since the Germans are in a fast sinking ship) and a standard of living that is, especially in the south of England, very high, and London is without question one of the twin financial capitals of the world (other is New York). Second, the average Englishman today has a much better life than the average Englishman during the days of the empire.
I assume much of this obsession stems from that the country has lost much of no-nonsense arrogance and confidence that permeated England in the 19th century. OF course, two major world wars (which hit Britain far harder, both economically and population losses, than America), and a poorly decided flirtation with socialism during the 1940s that crippled English industry for the next half century hardly helped.

There are great many similarities between lower class people all over the world, particularly between the English and American lower classes. Uneducated. Prone to violence. Poor public behavior.

What's your fucking problem? No one here is arguing that the English are the best people in the world. But it's rather ludicrious to hold the Americans as an example to emulate above the western Europeans. Last I checked, America was home to a very large poor underclass as well...and our violent crime rate is the shame of the western world.

Parts of England are very prestigious.
The Southeast is like New England/NYC: prestigious and cultured, with lots of tradition, but also lots of chavs.
The rest of England and Scotland is probably more like upstate NY/PA/the rest of the East Coast: lots of tradition, but poorer and less cultured.
Then there are Liverpool and Glasgow: England's answers to Detroit and Cleveland.

This thread is incredibly stupid. Attack the one country that actually supports America, thick and thin?
Attack the English when the bulk of Americans are fat, lazy, overweight, ugly, boorish lower middle class suburbanites who put in their forty hour week pushing useless paper at a TTT company and celebrate the weekend by going to the Macaroni Grill?
And for those of you doing the attacking-What have *you* done to make America the world's foremost economic and political superpower? Most of us only have the sheer luck of having been born in the US and most of us are parasites whose current spending habits are only a detriment to this country's long term future.
Nationalism can be such an incredibly stupid passion. Sorry to break the news to you guys, but the majority of Americans are in reality no different from the majority of the English or Canadians or French or Germans or Italians or Australians or Japanese. Boring, useless, middle class people in suburbia living boring, useless, TTT lives.
