Entering the final round. I didn't give them current salary or expected salary. Told them to make an offer and I'd evaluate.

Small legal dept. I'd be the second most senior. International presence. Daily matters would be part managerial and part dealing with random shit from HR issues, negotiations, compliance, to IP, etc.

On average, the traders probably make more after bonuses than the lawyers

ljl @ being the law dork at a trading firm. Your primary job will probably be shielding the founders from SEC fines, jail, etc. They'll hunt you down if you say too much.

I'm more familiar with the trading/technical side. Very rough and practically useless guesses would be $140k+ in Chicago, $175k+ in NYC

That's just a very rough guess of the lower end. I'm sure lawyers at top firms are pulling in $400k+, just like some traders.

Would rather not out the firm. Not all that familiar with prop firms but they have a few hundred employeea (300+). How do you differentiate them?

Dealt with them rarely while in pvt practice. Fund atty so I'd generally look at AUM

Different strategies, risk management, performance, etc., at different firms. I have seen several firms get rapidly blown out by poorly-managed trading. The more sophisticated firms shield themselves very effectively from those types of events and then obscure their SEC violations just as effectively through a mix of technical complexity, plausible deniability, possibly bribes, etc. These latter firms will usually pay more. You get a feel for the industry pretty quickly if you work in it (or know enough people who work in it).

Thanks. From what I've read, people consider them peers with Wolverine, which I understand to be a pretty good place.

Any particularly useful materials to read before the final interview?

I would check Glassdoor for interview details. Wallstreetoasis might have some useful information about the firm. Quant autists can be found at http://www.nuclearphynance.com/

I can't really comment on the legal aspects of proprietary trading but I know some technical stuff.

so do the traders. except chasing signature pages and fighting over "commercially reasonable" vs "reasonable" seems way less interesting (and less lucrative) than prop trading

being excited to come to work in the morning seems just as important as the hours. anyway this is a non-sequitur forget i said anything

The traders are probably always giving the lawyers swirlies or pushing them into lockers LJL.
