I think there are fewer options in smalllaw than there used to be, since firms are consolidating so much and midlaw firms seem to be raising hours expectations. People who want legal careers with reasonable hours start looking at other options.

I don't think that's what it's for. I think it's more of a job people take knowing they won't build a resume, or a job they've taken after they already have some experience.

It's more of a perception thing than a number. If someone's intelligence is sufficiently low that I notice the difference, we're probably not going to get all that close. I think most of my friends are in the above-average range. That's not actually too ridiculous of a standard - most college-educated adults are of above average intelligence, I think, and that's basically who I run into anyway.

Basically I think you should try to know a little bit about the firm, be able to discuss everything on your resume, think of some intelligent and *genuine* questions about the firm, and have some filler conversation if things stall. Don't worry too much about making up a phony connection to the market, and pay attention to who's interviewing you (a partner and an associate might not be interested in the same things, or able to give you the same information).

At one point is a man or a woman considered "shallow" for allowing a signficant other's monetary situation to play a pretty large role in their assessment of the relationship.

My current girlfriend is certainly not my dream girl, but a great girl. She is, however, made further alluring by the fact that she makes very good money and, more importantly, she makes very good money as an independent consultant (thus she can do so from anywhere in the country with a decent airport nearby as her residence). This way, no matter what my future plans (PhD program, law school, whatever), she and her career are not adversely affected, and that's a huge consideration as relationships get serious - I'll *never* have to worry about my being an assistant prof at some small LAC in the carolinas entirely disrupting her career.

Also, monkeys or baboons...which animal are you LESS likely to trust with a cup of bleach?

Maybe at the point where you'd consider leaving them if they were considering switching to a career that paid less (and had good reasons for wanting to make the change and reasonable odds of being successful and happy in that career)?

Monkeys. They seem dumber and more hyper. I think someone needs to conduct an experiment on this, though...

Why doesn't anyone wear slips anymore? And why don't any stores sell them?

Because women aren't worried about people seeing the shape of their legs through their dresses like they used to be? I certainly don't own a slip.

The second question is answered by the first. ;)

Sorry you're having shopping trouble.

Slips don't cover the shape of your legs, they prevent clinginess and showing through of undergarments.

I need a new full-length slip and I can't find one :(.

Oh, I guess I just avoid buying skirts that are troublesome in those respects.

A full length one? A half slip won't do?

It's for under a fairly clingy wrap dress. You can see the lines underneath where my bra is and if I wore a half slip you'd probably see the top of it.

My mother says that the reason slips are out is b/c clothing now comes lined, btw. I guess that probably is a big part of it.

OMG I just had this problem. Try a Boston store. The ones that they had were all wrong for what I was looking for, but you might be able to find a full length slip that will workfor you there.

haha...truth be told, i was banking on you saying no, so i could come back with a not-so-humorous retort that i could convince myself was clever in my inebriated state :-)

if you're seriously considering, let me have a few more too, because i'm not sure *I'm* that brave. But i do plan on going out.

I'm at a client's office all day tomorrow doing bullshit diligence -- i can't decide if that means i can show up hungover (because i won't be around the partners, etc.) or i have to be on my game (because I'll probably have at least some interaction with the client). thoughts?

Actually, my boyfriend just called me back and invited me out to dinner, so I'll have to bow out. Maybe we'll bump into each other some other evening, when we both are able to drink a bit more and get a bit braver.

You have to be in good enough shape to be pleasant and charming to the client's employees for brief periods of time. If you're naturally charming, that means you can be hungover and probably still pull it off.

More the latter. I think the vast majority of people will manage to find a suitable partner and that most will meet several people they could match up with. But yeah, I think a few people are going to be out of luck, especially if they're not willing to date similarly undesirable people.

Purely in terms of number of responses, do you think there's any posters still on the board that can compete with you for a "taking questions" thread? Fiver came out of the ashes to get some quick hits at an odd time, but I'm not sure anyone (outside of some lllong gone posters making a dramatic return) currently around can match a "rowan" thread.

why do you think this is?

People who give questions back tend to get more responses. I maybe need to do that if my response rate ever goes down. ;)

I think it's cause taking questions is a relic, and I kind of am one too. Maybe people tolerate it more when I'm out of step with the times.
