Trump only beat Hillary by single digits and Cruz crushed Trump in 2016. Also there’s a weird underreported backlash to some of Trump’s immigration policies bc they screw over Texas (eg Census, eminent domain at the border). CR that Cornyn will win easily (Beto was scared of him) but Trump will lag Cornyn by 7-10 points if the Dems nominate Biden or Beto, especially bc the effect of straight ticket voting is reduced in potus years and turnout will almost certainly break records and be several million votes higher than 2016. It’s true that Biden would still be like a 3-1 dog to Trump to actually win the state but if it’s close it will tie up a ton of money and time that should be directed at rust belt swing states. And it will be close if Beto or Biden is the nom. If the Dems are being smart they nominate one of those two bc they give the best chance to contest the most places. Texas (or Georgia) isn't going to flip the 2020 election.
Also, this poll is total crap because they force people to choose one or the other. Every other poll right now is like 43-37 with a bunch of undecideds. Thats especially true for Buttigieg, Beto and other lesser knowns.
But anyways, obviously a bad trend rong term. |
