Not excessive if they are collectible supercars and you own your house. Is excessive if they are junkers and you owe on a $3MM house.

Would add at this level of net worth you are probably going to want to have a second home, a boat, and a quirky hobby like flying planes or something. Would depend on what you’re doing recreation-wise, how many kids, and whether they are going to Andover/Wesleyan or public high and a flagship state school. Also if you get divorced or illness pwn3d.

My wife and I even slept on the boat once when we had too many people in the house. It was fine.

How does one spend $600k on those?

G63, LFA, SLS and an S class?

LFA, SLS would be ok, but just randomly buying those brands is asking for massive depreciation.

and then a couple of other mercedes

SLS, LX570 are both credited. Would need to know the other ones, but those two are not stupid.

Why? Do they depreciate at a lower rate?

I rode in the SLS and was not very impressed, but I am also not a huge car person.

SLS is not going to depreciate much, will just move with the market. LX570 has the lowest luxury SUV depreciation behind the land cruiser (its a clone) and maybe the G-wagen (which is a fad which will be hammered later as merc is building a ton). Also, with the new big Lexus coming which will not be as good, it should hold value well enough. Of course, as a new car, it will depreciate.

SLS is a really nice GT car, it’s not really a sports car. I really like them and it is one of my favorite designs of cars.

They should open like normal doors.

Model X is out now. Go test drive it. It is fine, but $130k or so to outfit one the way it should be. If you want a car that is somewhere between an SUV and a minivan while being faster than most Porsche 911s then that's your car. If you need something better off road then wait for the Cybertruck. If you think that's absurd and more than you need, there's always the Model Y, S, 3, etc. But yeah, I can't complain about cars that can do 0-60 in under 3 seconds.

Real answer: it depends which cars. Some at that price level maintain their value or even go up even if you put miles on them. There are guys with probably a lot lower NW than that who are cycling through 600k in cars every 2-3 years with the net cost including maintenance only a couple thousand per month.

The amount you've spent on cars is far more as a percentage of net worth than the hypo in the OP.

Idk, I love my BMW and it makes me happy every time I drive it. Definitely worth it. That said, there are diminishing returns. I could get a Bentley Bentayga that would be "nicer" and faster for like 2-3x what I spent and I think I would only be slightly happier.

You are approaching this as yourself in your current financial circumstances. Of course you can't possibly justify spending that much on cars. Someone with $7M could.

there are two ways to look at this.

1) as a percentage of net worth that's utterly ridiculous. a normal person with say 1 million in the bank after saving for a bunch of years wouldn't then spend 100k on a car.

or

2) at that level of net worth it's unlikely you would exhaust your savings as long as other aspects of your life aren't ridiculous, so why not?

That also depends on circumstances. If they are 30 and have "$1 million in the bank" but make $500k/year then if they want a $100k car then why not.
