the density explanation is dumb, lots of people died in rural northern italy. also lots of people died in southwest georgia, detroit, new orleans and surrounding suburban/semirural parishes, etc...all those places are harder hit than NYC

but yeah, being close to someone sneezing/coughing is enough. or touching anything somebody touched

New York is dense by residential population, but remember how many people (1) travel in for work every day (the difference is something like 1mm), and (2) were traveling around for weeks on crowded subways and commuter trains before anyone figured out that there was really something wrong.

this kind of explains why the less dense suburban counties around MFH were harder hit than MFH proper...Bergen, Essex, and Queens were the three hardest-hit counties. But it doesn't explain why Brooklyn was pretty much spared, and Hudson County has a lower rate than Bergen and Essex despite the PATH subway trains being way more packed than NJ Transit commuter trains, etc

i think it's too early to make sweeping conclusions. the pattern doesn't really align so neatly with any narrative

Agreed, my pumo friend. I do think there's an explanation for it, we just don't exactly what it is.

Most New York Coronavirus Cases Came From Europe, Genomes Show

Travelers seeded multiple cases starting as early as mid-February, genomes show.

this is a disease of the travel-shrews. the biggest cases stem from air/cruise passengers. nowhere has more travel-shrews than NYC. i wouldn't at all be surprised if RSF is infected given how much he travels and how fat he is.

Science seems to support travel-shrew theory. most seed cases in NYC came from Europe, not China, according to two separate studies:

I'll tell you exactly what happened.

you pack 100 people into a subway car during rush hour, one of which has coronavirus and coughs once and at least 5 people are infected.

now play that scenario out x 500 subway cars x 6 hours of rush hour a day x 30 days.

Add to that standing-room-only LIRR and Metro North trains, plus 50 people standing on the same street corner waiting for the light to change, and the 100 shrews at whatever salad place is big these days. Hell, Penn Station at rush hour, when everyone's standing in the same place waiting for the train track announcement, and it's not surprising at all. It's not residential population density in a mathematical sense, it's the physical proximity of people to each other all day.
