A bunch of generally chill traditional liberals who are not down with the rise of "cancel culture" -- including Noam Chomsky, JK Rowling, Salman Rushdie, Fareed Zakaria, Steven Pinker, George Packer, Margaret Atwood, Malcolm Gladwell, others -- published a short, measured, modest letter in support of free speech and open debate in Harpers. https://harpers.org/a-letter-on-justice-and-open-debate/
A bunch of twitter lib "journalists" are freaking out in response. See, e.g. : https://twitter.com/jessesingal/status/1280603481531912192
From what I can tell, there is a near consensus among young liberal journalists (at least among people willing to tweet about it) that the totally milquetoast letter is somehow dangerous, supporting white supremacy, etc. The reactions seems to prove the signatories' point... but also suggest that they are standing on the beach futilely yelling at a tidal wave about to crash. Pretty disconcerting stuff...

Wanted to be on board, but they'er acting like this is new and that it's taking over for some sort of fire right censorship that has been going on.
This letter in this tone, would have made sense about 15 years ago.

ljl what a shitty weak letter
orange man bad!
dont b mean 2 us!
on the plus side, at least it apparently shows that some libs behind closed doors are thinking the left has gone too far.

Look at this tweet The tone is "I am the winner, look what I did first!" with the added "look I am the exact weird subculture group this is about!"

It is clear that this has become a race to see who can silence opinions under the pretense of "verbal violence" by reporting them to their shared parental figures first. As competition increases to be the first to identify "verbal violence" the words this group reports get thinner and thinner to the point where they're reporting themselves for no reason.
To reiterate, these are children continually seeking approval from their parents.
