If you don’t want to play the large cap tech lottery, consider the following.
WDC makes hard disk drives (HDDs) and flash memory chips. Both are volatile commodities tied to phones, computers, data centers, etc. wdc and seagate technology (stx) collectively have like 85% of the hdd market. STX is 100% hdd. WDC used to be 100% hdd until it bought Sandisk (which became its flash memory business) for $19 billion in 2016.
STX (remember 100% HDD) EV/2020E revenue multiple: 1.55x WDC’s 2020E HDD revenue: ~$9bn
Takeaway from the above? The market should value WDC’s HDD business at somewhere around $14bn (9bn x seagate’s multiple). These guys sell indistinguishable memory capacity, basically digital oil. They should trade at similar multiples.
Note WDC's current total enterprise value is $19.7 billion. If the market thinks WDC as a whole is worth 19.7bn and its HDD business is worth ~$14bn, even a lawyer can figure out the market thinks WDC’s flash business is worth <$6bn.
Did WDC really overpay for Sandisk by $13 billion?!? I doubt it.
SK Hynix just bought intel’s flash business for $9 billion the other day. Intel had flash revenue of $5.5 billion this last year. So sk paid 1.64x revenue. Since WDC has ~$7bn of 20E flash sales, this suggests flash is really worth $11.5bn at least
Also note the SK/Intel sale removes one competitor out of a global market with now only four big suppliers. Note Wdc is already up 13% since the sk deal was announced last week. It will continue to benefit from further consolidation
Ps also a month ago Wdc separated the two businesses into different entities and appointed a new gm of the flash business. Seems like a precursor to a sale/spin off. People would love to see this for reasons i dont care to expand on |
