You have to drive all over the fucking place. It's full throttle. And this isn't even the season. They also use this messaging and scheduling app that blows my phone up 24/7. This is my 1st grader.

I really might quit. I already have two girls in ballet 4 nights a week and most Saturdays. They travel too. Outfits are often $100 a pop with 3 or 4 for one production.

And to be clear I do not expect any of my children to go on to be stars. My wife mentions scholarships and I shake my head. As a kid I rode my bike to little league games. Insanely different.

my 3rd grader made travel basketball, weekends are blown but it's 180 watching games, hearing parents cheer his name, and ensuring he'll make varsity basketball in HS one day.

this weekend they lost their 2nd game, but twice in the 4th quarter he tied it. once at the FT line, then peak parent experience, coach called an iso and he used the jab step i taught him to blow by his man for an easy bucket.

What part of the country are you in? Travel basketball in 3rd grade sounds insane bc most kids can still barely dribble and like .01% can have their eyes up while dribbling comfortably and a high speed with both hands. My sons experience of basketball at this age is like soccer in KG ie one larger kid grabs the rebound sort of bothers to dribble and mostly runs carrying the ball down to the other basket and then misses a layup. I have a good friend who has a son that’s a junior with D1 offers who plays on a very high level AAU team and he said it was all bullshit and he taught the kid all the basketball he knew until he started AAU and camps in the summers when he was going into 7th grade.

the part of the country where basketball is religion.

it's basically a miniaturized version of high school basketball. all the public high schools have development programs that start from 2nd grade through 6th (7th and beyond they're on the middle school/high school team). so, he wears the same jersey as the HS, gets at least 1x HS game he can go to with the team and be in the locker room at halftime, etc.

the games are high quality. man-2-man defense only, full court press allowed under 2min, high school refs tightly calling traveling/moving screens, etc. his team generically runs a motion offense but they have like 3 set plays as well.

he got cut during 2nd grade tryouts (3x days, 2hrs each, cuts every round), but we worked on his game (focused on his jump shot form + learning one really solid go-to move, a Carmello jab step) and he made (starts for) the 3rd grade team. i knew he had a shot during tryouts when the evaluators grabbed him + the 'best' kid from two different courts and intentionally matched them up.

https://imgur.com/WcblJid

aau will happen organically. the games are definitely scouted + players end up finding peer talent and forming teams.

What you're describing sounds like DC/PG County but that's where I grew up and where my friend lives. Though I suppose it could be Indiana or Kansas? You're telling me that these third graders are hitting e.g. more than 25% of their free throws on a ten foot rim shooting from a 15 ft free throw line?

in 7 games this season he's missed 1 FT, his range (normal shooting motion, no 'shoving' the ball) is 2 steps in from the HS 3pt line. high arc (palm under the ball), no banking bullshit off the glass.

One saving grace during the pandemic has been the local baseball community. Totally mask free the entire time. Even last summer the little league field was on private property and no mask. I'd take the entire family and we'd eat dinner there.

- you underestimate the desire of some kids to want to battle. it's a very real need for some of them, and not necessarily in a 'violent/angry' way. my kid is generally all about laughing and having a good time, but when he's on the court he's stoic af, has never once backed down from anyone, and has told me he likes the feeling of being out there. it's very rare to have a relatively safe/structured environment for some physical confrontation*** to occur and this level of sports provides that.

- extremely unlikely to make the school's team unless they're in a competitive program from 3rd or 4th grade. i was shocked at the skill level these kids play at across the board.

*** modern schools barely allow any contact on playgrounds and physical forms of conflict resolution are absolute no-go's. i grew up with nuns allowing situations to 'play out' before intervening (usually when someone's nose started bleeding) so i personally think this is one of the most valuable things they get from this.

Yesterday:

Home at 4:30. Had to have oldest son to batting cage by 5:00. Then two daughters to ballet at 5:30. Then back to batting cage at 6:30, then back to dance for youngest daughter and wait in car until 8:00 when oldest daughter gets out. My wife had our toddler and took him to swim. I didn't sit down until 8:30.

Sounds like hard work, man, but hard work usually results in success. How proud would you feel if your son gets to play varsity in high school or even gets a shot in college? What about your daughters, what if one of them gets to explore a dancing career because you helped her when she was doing ballet as a kid?

CR re work ethic. It's invaluable long term and probably the most CR trait a parent can help develop in their kids. Even if your kids are low-IQ and autistics, a great work ethic will still get them far in life. Sports/extracurriculars are a great way to teach your kids the value of hard work.

Why not teach work ethic through some skill that will be useful as an adult. For example, being great at tennis will probably bring more lifelong joy than being great at baseball. Likewise, being great at piano will probably be more useful for an adult than being great at the trombone. Ballet seems like something that serves no purpose in adulthood except for the minuscule group that becomes professional ballerinas.

anecdotal, but to me it seems hockey has the best mens leagues of all the major sports. i know guys that play "competitively" well into their 50s.

soccer seems doable if you're in a city, lacrosse good if you're in the northeast. basketball at 30+ seems designed to blow out your knees. obviously everyone plays softball but i don't know any adult hardball players.

Exactly-- ruined. But you don't have to go along with it. Can you imagine some poor kid who plays 10 years of baseball, year-round, no other organized sports. Has to fit in schoolwork between practice and games. Makes the HS varsity. Ends up getting a scholarship to Central Arkansas if he is lucky.

Could have spent those ten years playing baseball-- if he liked it-- or disc golf or kick the can or whatever. Some kids like the intensity of one sport all the time, but I am not sure it is the best for the vast majority of kids.

plus at the end of the day nothing matters more than monkey see monkey do -- if parents have work ethic and their own pursuits, for the most part kids will develop this too. I can't count how many rich kids I encountered as a tutor who did traveling sport nonsense but at the end of the day they ended up just like everyone else paying full price at some random out of state public school. more than anything else children reflect the attitude and behaviors of their parents.

Baseball is much different. It's becoming like hockey.

A year later now. The team opened a new in door facility. I'm thousands of dollars deep. My kid is smashing the fuck out of the ball. He played an age level up last year and the difference at this level is very noticeable. We've gone a little crazy though. In addition to his primary team I've had him doing hitting camps and fallball with another club (2x a week). The new club has been around for decades and they really know their shit, but they don't do our age group.

All told we're doing baseball: tue, wed, fri, sat x2 (am batting and afternoon fielding) and once a month private lessons on mon. Keep in mind I have two girls that do ballet 6 days a week. I'm basically a shuttle service. It's probably too much but my kid eats it up. He wants me to sign him up for more.

He seems to like it. I don't expect some MLB prospect. It's for the structure and work ethic. He gets to hang out with exclusively bros in a giant bro building doing bro stuff.

It kind of feels lazy in a sense. I drive and listen to podcasts.

I think it was over $15k last year for baseball/ballet including accessories and lodging. And I'm not rich.

I don't personally need anything or even really want anything. So I suppose it doesn't matter. I do like helping out the club and I'm happy there are fellas in the community putting this kind of effort into building young men for the future.
