i go to a t14 and have received offers from biglaw (lower V100) in NYC and from biglaw (200+ attorneys) in a secondary midwestern market (Minneapolis) - 105K.

The hours are un-comparable: average annual associate billable hours at the MN firm is 1775. My family owns millions so money is not an issue for me - I will probably be managing the family business later on in life.

I don't want to kill myself working long hard hours in NYC. Is the Minneapolis firm the obvious choice?

Do you have any preference between the two cities? They're both nice places, but quite different.

Then take the Minneapolis job. You certainly shouldn't work in New York if you don't know the city well and don't like what you do know.

Rowan,

have you lived in Minneapolis? In what context? How would you compare the cities?

Yes, I've lived in Minneapolis.

Well...I guess they're both cities with cold winters and some degree of cultural life. I can't think of a whole lot that's similar beyond that. New York lacks the relatively low cost of living, the family friendliness (partly because of the previous thing), the car culture, the classic Minnesota nice, and the more laid back Midwestern atmosphere. It has better food, much better nightlife, a few typical New York personalities you're not as likely to find in Minneapolis, good public transportation, more diversity of almost everything, and probably a better social scene for people over a certain age.

Yeah, it'd be *so* hard to avoid that if you have a family-owned corporation and a semi-competent lawyer.

I may be one of the only ones here saying this, but secondary markets are the way to go. Your money goes much further, and you have MUCH greater prestige among laymen (i.e. chicks) than you would in a place like LA or NYC. I don't understand the facination with NYC on this place, when you can do so much better rocking it in a secondary market.

Given your OP, it sounds like the best option would be taking the job that will prepare you best for running your family business. Do either of the two firms have clients in a similar industry?

the general area of the business is real estate and both firms practice in these areas. However, my family and their business is located abroad and is worth between $40 and $50 million.

The MN firm seems to have a broader range of clients including family-owned and smaller businesses. However, NYC is more international.
