The electric car experience itself is great: the regenerative breaking, the gearless acceleration, the low center of gravity, the spectacular control and turning, and having the equivalent of a gas pump in my garage. It’s clear to me that electric cars are vastly superior to gas powered cars in everything except maybe a few small niches where electricity is hard to get to.

However, the problems start with the user interface. Tesla got rid of the entire dashboard and instead put everything in the center console screen. Everything from speed, direction, charge remaining, etc. You also have to use the center screen to run your air conditioning, open your glovebox, or change the fan settings. The problem with this is that you get no haptic feedback for any of it. You have to take your eyes off the road and stare at the screen to turn your fan up. In a normal car interface, you can feel the button and feel the feedback as you turn it up. In a Tesla, you’re just blindly tapping on a screen that’s bouncing with the car. It’s really annoying.

But the icing on the cake is that Tesla keeps changing the UI up. You have to relearn where every control is because they keep “updating” the interface. Relearning this is shit is already annoying, but the updates keep putting more and more things behind menus. You used to be able to turn on your seat warmers from the Home Screen; now you have open a menu up to do it. Same thing with adjusting your seat position settings, and opening the glovebox. The interface with your phone for calls and music is just an absolute disaster now; Tesla clearly wants tos tart their own music service and have Tesla owners pay for it.

Tesla, just fucking stop making your product worse. You’re taking an awesome new product and just giving the market to your competitors.

Everything is 10-15% harder in a Tesla than a normal vehicle, and there is absolutely no reason for this.

There are a lot of reasons for it actually. It reduces weight and cost substantially. By putting the console in the middle, Tesla can easily make the same car right or left-side drive. Teslas are built more like Ikea furniture, with lots of the interior made with cheap, lightweight particleboard and plastic.

CRRR. That's why Tesla margins are so FAT and partly why the valuation is so fucking high. Once Berlin and Austin start producing cars they will be selling millions of units with 30% margins or higher. It's not good for the consumer, but it's great for Tesla.

Electric cars are awesome, but you’ll get the pros with any brand of electric vehicle, not just Tesla.

Now imagine you have to relearn where every button in your car is two or three times a year. That’s the Tesla experience.

test drove a model x last summer and was very disappointed. over a weekend of driving there was a series of weird glitches, ranging from annoying (door auto closing on my leg while i was texting - was halfway out of car and my leg was on the pavement) to outright dangerous (the car just coming to a screeching halt in middle of an empty highway at ~midnight for no apparent reason). also the battery life was SPS.

got a GLS and it's about 100x better experience and comfort.

Yeah, I’ve had a couple annoying experiences where I’m using cruise control, but an exit ramp lane starts splitting off of the right lane and the Tesla slams the brakes on because it can’t determine which lane I’m in or the car ahead of me is in. They tried to make the thing too smart and just made it annoying instead.

They call it "phantom breaking" and it happens CONSTANTLY! There's a NHTSA investigation going on. Tesla might be without any self driving soon if the feds prevent them from making it an option due to danger lmao.

I just got my Model 3 Performance two days ago. I thought I would hate the screen and having to learn where all the buttons are, but then I discovered the voice commands and that changed the entire game. It's literally just as good as Google Assistant. I had it open the glove box, change temp, turn on heated seats/wheel, open trunk/frunk, etc. It's really actually very awesome and alleviates all the problems you mention. I have voice controls in my BMW X5 too, but that's a gimmick that barely works, the Tesla voice controls are very, very good ,at least on the latest models. A friend with a Model Y from 2021 said his voice controls suck.

I find voice commands to be so annoying, it’s unreal. Add in passengers or kids and the reliance on voice commands sends me into a barely-contained rage.

In the last 18 months of owning my Tesla, the only improvement they have made is that my wife can no longer adjust the cruise control from the passenger seat.

Sorry friend. Yeah I get it w/ multiple people in the car. I'm usually driving alone the majority of the time, so that doesn't affect me.

You are 100% absolutely right about software changes that make things worse. Tesla owners spent 2-3 yrs learning where things are, only for the holiday update to completely change everything. It's a huge safety hazard for them to do that.

The thing that gets me is that the voice commands aren’t even convenient. You still have to push and hold a button to activate it, then say the right phrase. You used to be able to just push a button and get what you want; voice commands are just an extra step masquerading as convenience.

The glovebox doesn’t have a button; you have to open it from the computer screen. This allows you to lock it with a PIN, which I actually like. The problem is they have gone from being able to open the glovebox from the home screen to having to open a menu first and pressing a big obvious button to now opening a menu and having to find the poorly placed button.

LOL, you should cancel ASAP if your wife plans to use autopilot. They got rid of radar in latest models and rely only on the cameras and there's a TON of teething pains, even on old school ADAS systems like adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist. A $30K Toyota or Hyundai will have safer and more reliable lane keep and adaptive cruise than the Tesla. Teslas used to be better, but the hardware change has made Autopilot significantly worse. Also, I hope you didn't pay $12K for FSD lol

Cr. Hyundai/Kia and Ford have the best EV alternatives right imo. BMW is right behind, and then VW/Audi. There’s some good options, but they all have glaring weaknesses (slow charging speed, no charging network, not fast and fun like Teslas). The new kids on the block are making some cool cars , but you have to be insane to spend $70K on a brand new EV company product with zero support network. At least there’s a few hundred Tesla service centers. There’s almost zero Rivian/Lucid ones.

Ur going to go to jail friend. You won't be able to sue Tesla when ur car runs over and kills a pedestrian b/c there's a camera inside the car that looks at you. Technically you are not supposed to take ur eyes off the road or your hands off the wheel with AP/FSD engaged.

To be fair,

It’s true, you’re not even supposed to breathe while operating the car in FSD mode because of the heightened risks that movement in your chest and upper body can pose as you tightly grip the wheel. There’s a whole hose thing that you stick up your ass to oxygenate your body instead, it’s a $4k add on but it’s totally worth it.

To be fair,

I have spent hundreds of hours researching the EV market and EV tech over the last few years. But thanks for explaining that to me! You sound very smart, so just to confirm — is Tesla with FSD (I am using they colloquially because that’s how people commonly refer to it) a deathtrap on highways unless you are constantly paying close attention and correcting its many mistakes, or is it not? Also, how many hours have spent in that scenario to inform your opinion on that?

I also never said that I own a Tesla, I said I have spent many hours inside of them at this point.

Autopilot is dangerous now and I do not plan to use it on my M3P any time soon... it's not worth getting rear ended only to have a brand new car waiting in the shop for 3-6 months to get fixed... a friend got into a fender bender with his MY and he had to wait 4 months for a new bumper...

I assumed you owed TSLA stock, which is what I was referring to, not the cars.

I use it to drive home if I’ve had alcohol. I wouldn’t drive drunk, but it’s nice to have to minimize any possibility of getting pulled over. I just have the driver assistance, not the full autonomous driving, though.

i don't see how a tesla is a real car. the company can remotely disable the entire thing without your permission if it wants. it's more like a rented computer that you don't even properly own or control.

Weird that so many ITT are spreading nonsense FUD. Yeh, Tesla keeps selling record amounts of cars every quarter because people don't know that Tesla will just disable shit to fuck with them. I'm sure you'll link some stupid article about someone's FSD being disabled because Tesla realized it was added in error since it was never purchased. That is completely reasonable. What you seem to be arguing is absolute bs and wouldn't occur successfully in a free-market country.

does the company have this capacity or not?

if it does, can it be disabled?

the answer to both questions appears to be 'no.'

therefore, it's not a real car in the traditional sense.

I have a high end luxury car from the 90s with low miles that I inherited. It was kept in climate controlled garage and driven <2k miles/yr. I get crazy offers every time I take it for a drive but will never sell it. The seats alone weigh as much as new Elantra.

Yeah, now imagine the factory stereo was ripped out and replaced with all Alpine and Kenwood gear, bluetooth everything. I had a GPS head unit with a touchscreen at one point, but I replaced it with a single-DIN unit that has actual buttons and a good DSP. Those old cars are so quiet you can blast everything on max and people outside the car barely hear a thing. New cars save weight by getting rid of all that soundproofing material.

Also that car is sweet but mine has lower miles, my seats are in better condition and my engine compartment is cleaner. That's a much cooler car overall but mine is faster.

They're already doing this. They were charging people $2K for a performance upgrade. The motors were the same, they were just nerfed on some models.

But you right, in the future heated steering wheel will be $10/mo. or some shit.

To be fair,

“This is evil and bad and sick because tons of mindless retards will pay for these kinds of add-ons again and again and again and that’s pathetic and a sad commentary on our diseased society. Also, on an entirely unrelated note, Tesla is dun here and needs to stop pretending to be a software company -- that’s never going to work out for them financially so they will soon be subsumed by their competitors!”

Lol this is literally what the Tesla Bears say, unironically. Incredible.

Actually Tesla just made rear seats and steering wheels heated as standard. The car is plenty quick without the performance upgrade, so a simple solution for you is to just not buy it if you don't think it's worth it.

No that was me, but I understand the confusion. I agree that a good UI is everything, and that includes having physical buttons to perform basic functions, like you'll find on every entry-level Brother MFC. My MFC-L5800 has a touchscreen, but it's straightforward and responsive and unchanging.

To be fair,

Being called a dumb gullible idiot time and time again for doing your homework and correctly calling things by a bunch of contrarian faggot lawyers who “read a few articles” on an incredibly complex subject and are therefore totally certain that “[X] is destined to fail and only sheeple believe otherwise” — only to have them then turn around years later when your calls have been completely vindicated and smugly explain that “even a broken clock is right twice a day, good job with the dumb luck I guess” — gets very old after a decade or two. What can I say?

Yup, it's actually pretty impressive that despite all the bashing online and in the media about Tesla, and the fact that Tesla doesn't advertise, people that actually by them rarely go back to any other brand and convince at least their close friends to make the plunge as well.

To be fair,

I personally know a lot of true-believing Tesla fanbois who idolize Elon and love fucking around with their tech-toy cars and will definitely be buying Tesla going forward and are literally obsessed with the brand and talk about it with their friends and family members regularly. Not an exaggeration.

Meanwhile, according to XO (and to be clear this appears to be primarily based on second-hand complaints that poasters have read on Reddit), many if not most Tesla owners deeply regret their purchase and now think the cars are SHIT, the company is SHIT, get out while you still can because Ford or Nissan or whoever are coming to drink Tesla's milkshake any day now, etc.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, I wonder what to believe -- my own eyes and ears, or second-hand hearsay mostly drawn from a bunch of disgruntled anonymous literal Redditors? That's a tough one, I better "trust the science" here!

This month's Consumer Reports (I get this and Texas Monthly) confirmed that Tesla is easily number 1 in brand satisfaction among automakers (#2 is Porsche).

Elon Musk is an autistic white-male South African contrarian genius with paleo-conservative and populist impulses and a strong anti-shitlib streak; this site, accordingly, LOVES HIM and roots for him with passion and kinship. Anything else you're seeing is in-group contrarianism or (less likely) real opposition from one of our 3 remaining libs.

None of this has anything to do with the completely legit beef that replacing physical controls with touchscreen isn't analogous to the iPhone replacing physical buttons, both due to the safety issue (operating by feel versus devoting many seconds of eyesight-attention) and because physical cellphone buttons were proving woefully inadequate for controlling the expanding functions of a smart phone, whereas no one has ever complained that it was too cumbersome to turn on their seat heat or open their glove box before Elon Musk came around.

To be fair,

I don't actually disagree with this poast, but:

- Anyone who defends Tesla (either their product of the longterm bullishness of their prospects as a stock to hold) is immediately pilloried as a "pathetic Elon fanboy" or whatever.

- Meanwhile, any degree of angle of attack no matter how patently retarded or trivial -- "this stranger on Reddit says the finish is messed up on his steering wheel" "Brutal takedown by this Asian female automechanic on Instagram of the shitty interior quality of a Tesla" "I ordered a Tesla and their customer service sucks, fuck this company I now badmouth them 24/7 online why yes I do give restaurants 1 star Yelp reviews when I hit bad traffic driving over to eat dinner at them how did you guess?" -- is hailed as THE END for Tesla, WRITING IS ON THE WALL, CAN'T BELIEVE YOU IDIOTS BOUGHT INTO THIS SHIT.

It's all just so gay and retarded and tiresome. The Tesla Bears claim that the Tesla Bulls are obnoxious faggots, but the reality is that they are the worse offenders by far at this point. It's very analogous to cryptoskeptics coming out of the woodwork to shit all over BTCmos and ETHmos for the millionth time whenever there's a dip and then simultaneously claiming that coinmos are the *real* obnoxious assholes.
