In fact, the first half of the finale was excellent. But I agree the conclusion wasn’t very satisfying, either. Redemption/sacrificial endings, especially taking the bullet for your lost love, are trite by nature, & this pushed credulity because Jimmy would’ve found another way to help Kim without making a 7-year plea turn into a life sentence.

jimmy being slick and getting himself out and giving her a bunch of money is *exactly* what she doesn't want. a big theme of the last episode is that money isn't what's important. initially jimmy wanted to use the time machine for trillions. but then he realizes that he'd go back and not have his first slip and fall. he never would have become slippin' jimmy. kim doesn't want slippin' jimmy giving her a bunch of dough.
the final scenes didn't make sense but it makes sense for jimmy's character. the show wanted him to get redemption, and they found a way to do it. a little stupid and unrealistic but i get it. |

i think it says something about the quality of this show that the unrealistic nature of the negotiation was notable to me. most lawyer shows are so far removed from practice that you don't react to it, but this stuck out to me because they were so close to home throughout the series on being a lolyer. |

It seems far-fetched, but to be honest, that was his only way to ever win back Kim's approval/affection. If he only did the 7-8 years and tried to seek her out she would be furious that he "Slippin' Jimmied" his way out of a significant sentence and would never want to speak to him again.
In the end, her love was more important than his freedom. Slightly unrealistic? Maybe. But considering his sad-sack existence in Omaha maybe he figured life in prison could at least let him live with no regrets from that point on.
I thought the ending was fantastic. |
