It's actually a profoundly conservative idea.
"Travel" was a difficult thing for most of human history. The fact that even in the mid-nineteenth century, you would probably have a number of members of your party die trying to travel, even once, from Saint Louis to San Francisco is an astonishing thought.
Communities, then, formed in local places, and we needed thriving local communities every twenty miles in the East, and perhaps less so out west. But farmers could make a day's trip "into town" to get what they needed.
We rarely expected you to "move." You lived and worked in the same place, often the same building. You could walk one end of town to another. You knew every building along the way.
By the early twentieth century, of course, the industrial revolution was finishing its work on the farming communities, and the labor unions were trying unsuccessfully to make life better for the working man, but, still, you lived in one place, you worked in one place, you rarely would leave it except for some extraordinary undertaking. Even U.S. routes were things designed for leisure or rarity.
The advent of the Interstate Highway System, however, was the type of brute force central planning Communism we so valiantly fought against. We razed millions of homes and acres of arable land all for 10 lanes of concrete so you could go faster than ever. Your commute, inexplicably, grew much longer. How? Wasn't this supposed to make things *faster*? No--it made it an easier excuse for employers to tell you to live far away and "just drive" in to work. It made it easy to move out of state--rent a truck and in two days you can be at a "new job" somewhere else, ignoring the transaction costs. Your cars wear out faster than ever, so you need to keep buying more of them. We kill each other at higher rates on these roads. We spend more money on the concrete connecting the coasts than the sidewalk between our neighborhoods.
And just when you think you've had enough, you're convinced that this is a "liberal" idea, that wanting to use your feet is some Bolshevik paradise rather than the way every one from Jesus to Johnny Appleseed lived.

cr the car and plane all but guaranteed nomadism. can’t imagine how a feminist nation is supposed to work if wives, mothers can without warning pack 3 Michael Kors totes and charge a 1 way ticket to Stockholm to find herself because she feels “stuck.”
Add to this flight risk the financial burden on the MC (note, insurance, gas, maintenance x2-3) that, LOL, can easily eat 30-50% MC income after adding children.
Look at our grotesque hellscape of Carl’s Jr., McDonalds, Hobby Lobby, ABC stores, Sbux, Chick-Fil-A, strip malls everywhere you go (GDP my dude!) there’s no real culture or character just endless billboards of BIPOC ads for community colleges and workman’s comp and Rx poison and you have no real way of knowing WHERE you are in the country or state. the auto gave us this no boarders, autonomous free trade zone exit bag.

just get tesla and turn on autopilot and zone out for 90% of your drive
1% chance of dying in a firey unextinguishable crash, but other than that your day to day is much better (also for most xo poa they probably would prefer higher chances of dying

JFC at the low IQ takes ITT. Did the interstate highway system cause some unintended problems? Absolutely. But it was also one of the best infrastructure investments this country has ever made. A very high percentage of shipments of goods are made by truck, and the interstate highway system reduced shipping costs enormously, which is a big reason that the U.S. is so wealthy and prosperous today.
Go live in a Latin American country that has never invested in highways and tell me how awesome it is. Everything is expensive because shipping costs are much higher. Commutes in any big city are a nightmare. And traveling between many cities is dangerous or impossible due to nightmarish traffic and poor road conditions. The interstate highway system has its issues, but it is far better than the alternative of not having one.

Highways were inevitable. The problem is that we have a continent sized country that all speaks the same language. That’s the driver of our nation’s supercharged economy and also our curse. People move around for jobs, far away from family, and lose all social cohesion.
Split this bitch up into 5 regional counties and ban travel between them, that’s the only way to get social cohesion back. Also ban any city over 100,000 people.

No we don't. What language does New Mexico speak? What language does Maine speak? What language do most people in Silicon Valley speak? None of these are the same.
By the way, this is the reason we don't have social cohesion, not highways. Hungary has highways and is fine.

Bzzzzt. Wrong answer.
New Mexico: Spanish
Maine: English
Silicon Valley: Chinese/Hindi
A bunch of people in India speak English at work too. So what?
