But honestly, even making this argument shows how big of a scam the entire invasion is. In 2014, if Russia had simply offered to buy Crimea, my guess is that Ukraine would have accepted the deal given that they were desperate for hard currency at the time. And even an extremely generous offer for Crimea would have cost Russia a tiny fraction of what this invasion cost.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has nothing to do with self-determination in Crimea or the Donbas. If that were the issue, it could have easily been settled peacefully with a far lower cost to both sides. The issue is that Putin is a dictator who loves living a life of luxury while most of his country starves. He tries to convince Russian proles that he is a new Peter the Great so that the proles will support him while he bleeds them dry to make himself and his oligarch buddies rich. And that means that he has to brutally repress any countries that reject his power. Russia invaded Ukraine to punish them for wanting to align with the West rather than Russia. That's all there is to it. |
