1) his gf dumped him and we all went together in a big group (mixed genders including her), he seemed fine.
2) i called him that night and he seemed fine, he called me back telling him he was going to kill himself, i picked him up and he stayed here.
3) he left my house that morning before i woke up with a basic text thanking me for being a good friend and telling me he locked up.
4) after two days of not hearing from him several friends and i got worried and started searching for him, we called to police to file a missing persons report.
5) police brought us into the police station and eventually had us ID his picture. his ex-gf and i both saw.
6) i had to tell his dad. i've also been in constant communication with his family. he just moved here away from his friends and family and we were just starting to become good friends, but i didn't know him that well yet. |

staying with someone who is threatening suicide as a way to get you to stick around is not sustainable. if a friend asked me whether they should go through with a break up when their partner is threatening suicide, my advice would be the same. people should not feel like they're being held hostage in a relationship.
also, he refused to consider treatment for over a decade. perhaps if people like you weren't so aggressively antagonistic to mental health stuff more people like him would have sought treatment and survived. |

Then there my wife's friend, which hits a distinctive nerve. She was the pinnacle of achievement on the outside: top of her class, a specialized nurse at a prestigious hospital, beautiful, friendly, and the life of the party type. When we heard she had taken her own life with no warning, no note, only a bottle of painkillers, we were shocked.
If so many young, vibrant people turn to drugs and suicide, what does that say about us?

We lost touch around college or so, but I remember him being smart, talented, level headed and funny. The guy ended up having a very successful career, went to great schools and had an advanced degree, probably was pulling down $250-500k a year.

Another guy died of an OD - but he was into drinking and drugs really early - I think he relapsed on a major drug addiction during the pandemic and OD'd.
