I'm an ectomorph, if that's what you mean.
From wikipedia: Ectomorphic body type -- The physique of an ectomorph is centered around the brain and nerves. These people are slim and possibly underweight, and will often have a hard time gaining weight and building muscle mass (in our modern times, with the emphasis on physical fitness and muscularity, this has given rise to the notion of the "hardgainer" and "hardgainer" training methodologies which do have anecdotal evidence that the physiology responds to different training but can be overcome. Stereotype: the ectomorphic person is likely to have a cerebrotonic temperament and could be described as artistic, sensitive, apprehensive, introverted, socially restrained, and highly self-aware. Examples of ectomorphs would be marathon runners, fencers swimmers, some basketball players, and fashion models.

Didn't apply to Stanford.
Didn't apply seriously to Columbia (applied, but didn't get forms in on time, etc.).
Chicago asked me to write an additional essay, but I didn't do it and subsequently got rejected.
Harvard waitlisted me and asked for an additional essay on why I would like to go to Harvard. I didn't write it and then didn't make it off the waitlist.
Yale flat out rejected me.

I'm an actual banker, but I work for a prop trading desk that specializes in highly quantitative program trading, so everyone in our group knows how to program.
(I'm not on the investment banking side. I'm on the trading side. I would say that to work on the trading side of Wall Street these days without knowing how to program is pretty tough going. All the quantitative groups use computers to crunch the numbers and run back tests, etc. People aren't exactly phoning their orders in like they used to back in the 20th century.)

Date: January 7th, 2007 5:37 PM Author: Beady-eyed green legend Subject: When I turned down law school...
I had no other options. I had a 24-hour-per-week job that paid $30K and no options to go anywhere else. I was depressed and expected myself to fail in life. Everyone who knew me told me to go to NYU because it is a great school in a great city, or go to Duke because it is a great school in a great climate and offered me a 1/2 tuition scholarship. But I looked into my soul and knew that I just did not want to be a lawyer. So I chose the riskier option and turned down law shool. In my heart of hearts I knew that I was going to hate being a lawyer. It is one of the few correct decisions I have ever made in my life, and it is only in hindsight that I see that it was correct.

i'm about to turn down a lateral officer to mcdermott will & emery (i have to tell them by tomorrow yes/no) to take a job closer to UVA so i can finish grad school faster and move away from practicing law full-time...
any words of wisdom? i will be leaving biglaw money soon after this and making much less for the next 2 yrs if i do this
any advice?

i'm going to move out of DC to charlottesville, va. will save a lot of money doing so.
i dont pay tuition at UVA (i have a full tuition fellowship that covers up to the amt of my out of state tuition).
i have job options there that pay a lot less but can pay living expenses and some spending money.
i'm 26. i've paid off some student loans but still have a bunch (but can make the monthly payments while i'm at UVA).
i have a JD and i'll have a PhD when i'm finished. when i'm finished i'll be able to get jobs paying biglaw-like money, but that won't be for a few yrs (as noted previously)
i anticipate some psychological "what ifs" if i ding the McDermott offer... like, when i'm working hard at UVA and writing lengthy complex papers instead of doing doc review and writing memos, i will be thinknig to myself, why did i leave BigLaw money on the table...
another factor: although i went to an HYP u/g, my JD was from a 2nd tier TTT and i consider myself lucky with my law firm experience (1 yr at a V10 and now a lateral offer at McDermott in a corporate department). so, if i ding McDermott to go to school i will feel that i "made it" (getting the offer) and then walked away form it
in the long run, it willb e good but any hints on dealing with regrets? or did you totally know you would be fine?
how did u handle that?

any hints on the handling of psychological results of ding-ing my offer at a Vault rated firm to go to school for at least 2-3 more yrs? (keeping in mind the work will be fairly difficult even if its less routine)

well to be honest i hadn't taken a math class since calc II in highschool (other than a few econ classes in college), so i really wasn't expecting to do well
and a 770 is only 87th percentile so it isn't spectacular, i'm very glad they didn't have anything more advanced than geometry though

i got an 800 math and it was only 92d percentile.
i also got only a 650 verbal reasoning... weird bc my SAT I verbal was 800 and i read voraciously (i was a 2L when i took it)
my 650 was 91st percentile and the 800 quant was only 92nd percentile. weird.
also got a 6.0 and it was around the 90th %tile also

I also teach LSAT for one of those two companies. I'm wondering exactly how you worded your 99th percentile LSAT score on your resume. I want to basically do something similar to what you did (parlay LSAT score into good non-law job). However, I'm told that listing the actual score or percentile turns some resume readers off because they think it's pompous (i.e., they get jealous). Did you just say "Hiring standard: 99th percentile official LSAT score" (or something like that) underneath the info on your employer? Any specific info would be appreciated -- I want them to get the idea that I have good reasoning skills, but without turning them off. Thanks.

I basically listed my work experience. Under each job I had a couple blurbs about what was involved. For my LSAT teaching job I just said something like "taught x number of students" and "all instructors are required to have 99th percentile official LSAT scores."
I did feel like I was preening a bit, but I didn't question it much. I was glad that I had had that job, though, because it gave me an excuse to mention the whole LSAT thing. It would have looked a little more lame if I had just mentioned my LSAT score completely out of the blue.
It never crossed my mind that the person reading my resume would get jealous. The guys in my group are ridiculously smart and they all scored in the 99th percentile of whatever tests they have taken in life. I was trying to prove I was in their league, not lord it over them.
