Phil Spencer: "We want Xbox to Win"

the Console Wars rage on
Xbox CEO Phil Spencer described how Xbox can win using hardware innovation, rather than exclusive games. "I want people to pick hardware based on the capabilities of that hardware, and how that fits into the choices they want to make about where they want to play. We want our hardware to win based on the hardware capabilities that we have."
Spencer described how the most successful games in 2025 are simply games that are everywhere, describing games like Fortnite, Minecraft, and so on. "I want to build a platform that services creators that are trying to meet people on every screen." Spencer reiterated previous comments from the likes of Xbox president Sarah Bond that the firm remains all-in on hardware, describing it as "fundamental" to Xbox. "On our own hardware, I think it's fundamental to what Xbox is. It's not lost on me that "box" is in the name of our brand. I say from the position that I'm in, I look at hardware as a critical part of what we do, while not trying to gatekeep the games off of other places."

They also own and publish most of the PlayStations games now, including its best seller by a large factor. And they own the Cloud infrastructure that Sony relies on (Azure).

I pay for Game Pass, have a Series X console (although it is mainly used as a streamer these days) and will probably get the next one too. I have several Xbox Elite controllers which I use on both the console and PCs. They now have a partnership with GeForce Now for streaming which is truly 180. Sony is like Apple in that they have their own ecosystem and doesn't play well with any other ecosystem and as a result if you see innovations somewhere else then forget it.
By the way, when you think about spend for someone like me with Xbox it isn't that small. Each controller is like $100. Game Pass is like $10/month. Consoles are like $500 (assume the next will be $600-700). If I can buy a game to be CrossPlay I will and that means buying from the MS store. |

This is also why I didn't get the original Legion Go. By the time I've bothered to bring another device, I may as well have it be a real laptop. |
