2) Instability and corruption are toxic for growth.
3) 2 resulted in massive brain drain. If you look at migration, Ukraine lost a ton of people since the fall of the USSR. When you meet "Russians" in the US, a huge number of them are actually from Ukraine. Far more than from Russia despite Russia always having had a much larger population.
4) Their "pro-western" government resulted in a stupid situation where they broke off their relations with Russia which is historically by far their largest trading partner without EU/US trade compensating. So they're effectively living off of Western crumbs. The same problem exists in places like Armenia and Moldova. This was also a reason why Georgia got sick of the bs and elected a pro-Russian government.
Regardless, we're talking about the damage the Commies did, which includes deliberately balkanizing the Russian Empire which planted the seeds for the numerous conflicts we see today. |

Part of that was because Communism never worked, part of that was because as shitty as it was there was a huge recession at the end of the Commie era. Then that system largely crashed and capitalism didn't really take root either and was largely limited to importing Western goods which they had no ability to pay for. Some countries ultimately made money by becoming outsourcing centers for Western companies. Poland is like that. For anyone that thinks I'm being unfair - name a Polish company you buy stuff from.
Russia had a lost decade in the 90s during the Yeltsin era. Only during the Putin era did they start developing their own companies and technology.
Ukraine basically had constant strife. Their own companies couldn't be started because anyone good left. Everyone thinks the Stalker series is a cool video game series, right? Not Ukrainian anymore. The company left Ukraine a while ago.
Long term Ukraine is also fucked because the war basically killed any green shoots they had. Another huge wave left, then another huge wave died or was gravely injured. And there is no end in sight. |
