If you want espresso machine quality milk frothing on your stovetop, then you want the Bellman Espresso. Amazing for this purpose. But I’d reserve its coffee making capabilities for camping stove use. It’s a PITA to clean when you use it to make coffee. Though perhaps not much worse than a Moka Pot.

It takes 15-30 seconds to clean and refill a mocha pot. Commercial grinding produces better espresso than home ground

The best home grinders far exceed the best commercial grinders. Commercial grinders need to be hopper fed, and typically rely on subpar grind by weights. The best home grinders are single dose and have nearly zero retention, meaning you get everything out from the beans you put in.

Commercial ground cofee is very uniformly ground at the proper consistency. Home ground is not uniform, some parts are too fine and the rest is varied. Week old commercial grind wins in taste tests against fresh home grind for this reason.

This just isn’t true. Against a normal home grinders, sure, but the top of the line home grinders (Weber, Kafayek) produce a more uniform grind with less retention. Single dose grinders when done correctly will always be better than hopper grinders.

I am referring to the grinders used by Lavazza and top brands to prepare coffee for packaging. a grocery store grinder may be no better than your expensive home grinder, but real pro grinding gets the best results in taste tests, even when 7 days old. Properly ground coffee that has been opened and sitting in the freezer for months will be equal or better than fresh ground from most home grinders.

Once again, this isn't true. I'm not sure if you're trying to say that preground espresso is better (which it absolutely is not), or if you're trying to say that Lavazza sells commercial grinders which are better than the top home grinders (which, once again, is not true).

Kafatek and Weber Work make precision grinders that have shown to grind more uniform and have less retention. There's a reason the top home grinders cost $3k-$5k.

The Bellman is a PITA to clean because you need to let its temperature and pressure come down before you can clean it. Which means it’s sitting on your stove/in your sink until you get home.

It doesn’t have to be $250, but you do need a burr grinder to make a consistent grind. A burr grinder is a precise machine, with machine cut parts, and having the proper grind is the third most important part of coffee quality.

It will last a long time and you will use every day, so very well worth it. Paid $99 for mine about a decade ago.

Hello, I come here looking for some hope. My spouse had a really great career going at one place for 15 years. Life got expensive as our kids began getting older, etc and I work in education (low paid). So, my husband traded in his long time career for a job that would pay more, thinking he was climbing the ladder. Soon after, that company got bought out and he was laid off. He has been unemployed for about a year. He had severance for part of it. We have been on unemployment and living off all the savings we have. He has had tons and tons of interviews with no results. I have been in a state of fight or flight this entire time. It has completely ruined our marriage and my mental health- the instability, lack of control and no end in sight. When I think about the poor choice (of leaving his other job for something so unstable) that got us here, it makes me sick and feel so sad for him. Its been a huge loss in so many ways. We are in our mid 40s, for reference. Has anyone been in this position and things worked out? Weve never had a situation like this with unemployment and I feel hopeless.

A bunch of people who don't know shit about espresso or grinders in this thread.

If you're going to a traditional italian dark roast your grinder isn't going to make a huge difference. You can generally grind very coarse and still extract enough out of the beans.

If you want light roasts you're going to have to pony up for a grinder that can grind very fine and uniformly. If you've never had specialty espresso that is correctly dialed in you won't understand it. I was rocking my Breville Barista Express for 6 years thinking I was making passable espresso. I went to a specialty coffee roaster and had a fruity light roast and it was 100x better than anything I had ever had. You could taste peach in the coffee (it sounds weird but it's really good). You can only get this by having a high quality grinder, and in order to get a high quality grinder you need to have burrs that are precise, finely machined, and adjustable to the micron.

I have no idea if these grinders are worth it for pourover, but after spending $$$ on a nice grinder I can say without a doubt it is one of the best purchases I have ever made.

If expensive grinders are flames why does every espresso shop in the world use them? Has nobody figure out that they can get high quality coffee and save thousands of dollars?

Thinking a high quality grinder is flame is one of the biggest tells that someone doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Why are cafes spending tens of thousands on equipment when they could just serve nespresso pods!?!?

Do you realize that espresso didn’t become widespread until after WWII, and even then it was dark Italian roasts that everyone was drinking (where extraction is easy and this superfine grinds are not required). Ultra light roasts, which require very precise grinders, became popular in the last 15 years.

Please stfu about that which you know nothing about.

The goal of a grinder isn't to grind finely; it's to grind consistently. A cheap blade grinder will give you pea size chunks and tiny fine particles. It's hard to predictably brew with such variation. More expensive burr grinders will give very consistently sized particles. Then you can vary extraction and other variables to your preferences

yes some very cheap ones suck that doesn't change the fact that you can get the same result with tons of grinding products, it is a blade spinning in one form or another, plenty of other industries use very sophistcated grinding technology and don't bitch and moan about it endlessly, there is truly nothing special about your fancy one, they did not discover some novel way of doing anything they just overbuild them and charge more because they can

Why are you even participating in this conversation? A burr is not a blade. And plenty of bitching goes on in any industry where materials are ground into powders. If the grind doesn't meet specified parameters in size, variation, etc. it can completely screw up a manufacturing process

The grinders that fit on your counter are tiny and have to use little burrs attached to motors that generate nothing but torque. After running for a few seconds, friction and waste energy make the burr hot, and the coffee beans are being exposed to all dat heat at the same time they are SLOWLY pulverized. Commercial grinders are big enough and the beans are ground so quickly that they come out the same temperature as they went in.
