"arent they somewhat expensive?"

Expensive for law school students? Sure. I'd love a maid but I know I can't afford one now. Expensive for Biglaw lawyers? Not really. Especially if you get some FOB immigrant.

"well, i come from a different background than you guys, probably, and i sort of like doing things for myself. if nothing else, it gives one a mental break from work.""

I disagree. IMO, the last thing you want after working 12 hours straight is to be doing laundry and cleaning up.

Here's how I figure it: something *has* to give. One can't work 60 hours a week, spend 10 hours a week commuting, and then spend another 20 hours a week on house work/cooking/cleaning/etc. Since I can't really cut biglaw hours, I have to cut everything else. If I live by work and hire a maid then all I have is 60 hours or so a week, which isn't worse than what most people have considering they deal with commute and doing things themselves. Make sense?

It may not be elaborate cooking, but I don't see the point of having anyone else cook for me.

Because they fuck my laundry up and it is too expensive to send all that out. If I had a family, I could see wanting to have someone else do it, because kids come with a fuckload of dirty clothes. But for just me, it seems silly.

Both of these depend heavily on me being single.

Go out. You have to shop less, and no cleanup.

"Because they fuck my laundry up and it is too expensive to send all that out."

Its not that expensive, is it? I remember in Russia it was great: you drop it off, you pick it up in 2 days. Barely costs more than doing it yourself and comes back nicely folded.

Well, I kind of doubt that all lawyers and hard-working professionals (doctors, etc.) have maids.

Personally, I think I'd rather invest the money I would otherwise spend on a maid.

And unless you have a huge place, who needs a maid, really? My mom owns a 3200 sq ft house and spends very little time cleaning it (she works full time and does all kinds of stuff). She has never hired help in her life. The place looks just fine.

And if family members of mine who live in or near large cities are an indication, good incomes can evaporate really quickly in those high-COL areas. I would be a little uneasy about paying for something like that under those conditions, especially just starting out.

No, I've never worked for big law. I've spoken with quite a few people who have though.

Of course having to work on a case I don't believe in is a concern, but that's one of the reasons i'm going into business law, not criminal law. If I lose or win, people might have more/less money, and sometimes it might be unjust, but at least no one will die or go to jail for something they haven't done because of me. That level of bad karma I can live with.

Besides, I hope that that at least sometimes, I'll be able to influence people to do what's best both for their company and for others.

that's my point... it became very quickly apparent to me how little difference i would be making in anything i was working on in a biglaw firm, and i am like you, i want to influence people, and see that what i am doing is changing things and causing some good. business law/corporate law you will be representing a lot of companies who could be indirectly (or directly) causing a lot of harm to a lot of people... and/or animals plants and bunnies... :(

I know. But I don't think Big Law is evil specifically, they're usually more neutral than evil. Once I have money and some experince, there are other things I want to do, like someday I'd like to teach at a law school and start or continue with an existing child clinic.

But I can't do that right away. Getting into teaching is really hard, and just doing pro-bono and stuff, well, with my pet cause, I couldn't handle it.

LOL

Typical barzini response:

"Personally, I think I'd rather invest the money I would otherwise spend on a maid.

And unless you have a huge place, who needs a maid, really? My mom owns a 3200 sq ft house and spends very little time cleaning it (she works full time and does all kinds of stuff). She has never hired help in her life. The place looks just fine."

REALLY, DON? I DIDN'T THINK YOU'D SAY THAT!
