i'm going to move out of DC to charlottesville, va. will save a lot of money doing so.
i dont pay tuition at UVA (i have a full tuition fellowship that covers up to the amt of my out of state tuition).
i have job options there that pay a lot less but can pay living expenses and some spending money.
i'm 26. i've paid off some student loans but still have a bunch (but can make the monthly payments while i'm at UVA).
i have a JD and i'll have a PhD when i'm finished. when i'm finished i'll be able to get jobs paying biglaw-like money, but that won't be for a few yrs (as noted previously)
i anticipate some psychological "what ifs" if i ding the McDermott offer... like, when i'm working hard at UVA and writing lengthy complex papers instead of doing doc review and writing memos, i will be thinknig to myself, why did i leave BigLaw money on the table...
another factor: although i went to an HYP u/g, my JD was from a 2nd tier TTT and i consider myself lucky with my law firm experience (1 yr at a V10 and now a lateral offer at McDermott in a corporate department). so, if i ding McDermott to go to school i will feel that i "made it" (getting the offer) and then walked away form it
in the long run, it willb e good but any hints on dealing with regrets? or did you totally know you would be fine?
how did u handle that?

i'm in a similar position, although i'm out. for me "finishing what i started" included 2 yrs of practice. 1 yr at an NYC office of a V10 and another yr or so at a V50 in DC in a practice area that will be useful when i transition to the health sciences business world... i looked at the 2 yrs as a learning experience ... of course i've been paid for that learning experience... so its kinda nice

i am doing the master's portion now... i have classes only on fridays. i lateraled to this firm from STB in NYC. i am not partner-track, nor do i want to be. i billed slightly over 1900 hrs in 2006 and my target was 1800, so i was fine.
i work in DC and drive out to charlottesville on fridays. i am @ UVA for grad school. i would tell you what grad program im in but its too small and would give away my ID.
i work long hours still, but my job now = antitrust. i am not doing the heavy lifting corp work anymore. i specialize in Rodino filings and 2nd requests. i travel a lot to the clients (which could be any day of the week, i just have to go on site and dig through their treasure trove to find the magic docs that DOJ needs to approve the merger)
do you have a thought on the underlying question?
btw, i am new as of yesterday, although i used to post on jdjive.com when i was in L school. im not a fan of kubricks work either, having only seen 1 of his movies (Eyes Wide Shut)

i wasn't bragging. i was just stating that it was AWFUL to live in an area where bad behavior was the norm/tolerated and idiots/thugs were exalted. it was a huge fact of life for me at that time... the fact i went to work early in the AM and then went to law school at night, coming home from library around 12mid or 1am. and i couldnt walk down the block or through my building lobby without being subjected to seeing drug deals, being harassed, hearing loud kids running around on a school night, and smelling weed all throughout my building.
i wanted to juxtaposition this with a type of living on the rise--ppl moving to exurban areas ~1 hr from a smallish city where zoning is very protective and therefore people just assume everyone else is good and the quality of interactions are enormously improved |
