Not with the Core 2 Duo processors. Intel has purposefully underclocked them by 20%-50% because the architecture is that much better than AMD's offerings. The underclocking is so severe a $115 e4300 can be overclocked to the speeds of a $1000 C2D processor at stock speed.

The e4300 is the cheapest model of Intel's Core 2 Duo line. It is probably the best processor for the money by far if overclocked. The P4 has a reputation of being slow and hot, while the C2D is seen as its opposite.

if I already have an older custom made computer, with all of the drives, power supply, harddrives, and soundcard that I need, how much would it cost to replace the motherboard/RAM and video card to what you have? Is there anything else that I would need to add in addition to what I listed here? And would changing the motherboard out fuck up stuff already saved onto my computer? When I have a little more money this august, I want to upgrade my old computer to a wicked gaming system. Would it be cheaper/easier just to buy a whole new computer?

I paid $592 for my upgrade. You could probably go as low as $570, including shipping and taxes. If your PSU is crappy, you may have to shell out another $50 or more for a new one. You can probably reuse your old drives and case.

"how much would it cost to replace the motherboard/RAM and video card to what you have?"

Depends on what you want. Could be as little as a couple hundred.

"would changing the motherboard out fuck up stuff already saved onto my computer?"

It would still be on your hard drive, but Windows wouldn't be happy at all. You'd need to reinstall Windows if you want to avoid serious amounts of tinkering time.

"Would it be cheaper/easier just to buy a whole new computer?"

Maybe. If you're running lots of IDE drives, you'll have a hard time finding a shiny new motherboard that can run them all. Things are shifting to SATA.

As others have said, you may need a new PSU. The new high end graphics cards are pretty power-hungry, and you'll probably need 500W.

Your old system will work fine once you do a reinstall of Windows. You don't have to reformat, just do a repair installation (which can be tricky if you've applied Windows XP SP2; you'll need to look into slipstreaming).

Yeah, absolutely correct. But the newest graphics cards require 26A on the 12V rail, which is 312W right there. It is pretty hard to find a 400W power supply that will work.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_supply_rail

When you look at the back of a power supply, you will see a list of voltages and amps. These refer to the lines of power (or "rails") that the supply delivers to the computer. Different peripherals use different voltages.

The mistake many people make is assuming that the higher number of watts in a power supply the better. This is the incorrect way to calculate your power needs. All that really matters is that you have enough power on each rail. A ton of extra power on a 3V rail (which boosts up a PSU's overall wattage) does you no good when the power-sucking devices (CPU/Graphics Card/etc.) almost all use the 12V rail.

So, as an example, the latest line of graphics cards all suggest 26A on the 12V rail. So when you look at power supplies, it is more important to look at the 12V rail than the overall wattage. A 500W power supply with only 15A on the 12V rail is probably inadequate; a 450W power supply with 26A on the 12V rail is fine.

I went to get IE 7 for something b/c firefox wasn't recognized and my "genuine check" or whetever couldn't find my microsoft reg so I'm left without IE and I can't get it emailed since it's an .exe file.

What's the thing on firefox that makes websites think you're using IE?

thanks. i hate when websites don't tell you 1) that's why the site isn't working for you or 2) recognize everyone cool uses firefix and they need to adapt to the times.

Why don't you buy all the parts yourself? You'll save a ton of money that way.

It's more fun when you're in school and have more time than money. Soon I'll be working and have more money than time.

Putting parts together is simple enough if you just want a computer that runs really fast. If you have some other criteria, like appearance, size, and/or noise then it gets exponentially more complicated. My current computer is an SFF that looks and sounds great but I cycled through a lot of video cards, fans, etc. before I found ones that would work well together in the space that I had.

From a purely cost perspective I've also found it hard to beat Dell in pricing. They get such bulk discount pricing on their parts and the desktops are actually pretty well designed. My computer was cost-effective only because I bought almost all used parts off Anandtech or eBay.

When I bought my processor the E6300 was the cheapest available. I got it for around $180-190 shipped. I'm currently overclocking it to around 3 GHz (1.8 original) but I'm hesitant to go farther because of how hot it is this summer. I'm using a Scythe Ninja cooler. It's a good cooler and I shouldn't have heat problems, but it looks like the processor's IHS is NOT flat (THANKS INTEL).
