he has said many times that he had no clue what to do on the SAT and got a terrible score. But AA got him into Northwestern where he flourished at the Medill School of Journalism. He is now one of the most respected journalists out there and an extremely popular and influential sportswriter.
he says that standardized tests are biased and dont accurately reflect intelligence and that he's living proof.
thoughts?

"extremely popular and influential sportswriter."
This, along with journalism in general, does not take a college education.

This is shockingly stupid.
It involves taking a mass of data and reducing it down to something coherent after interviewing players and coaches.

you do need talent, but this isn't something that journalism programs can teach. It also isn't registered on admissions tests, and thus this guy's success has nothing to do with the AA debate.

See how easy this game is.
You do not need to go to J-school to be a successful journalist.
But if you want to be a journalist, J-school certainly helps you to get the skills necessary.

him: Interviewing players and coaches, oh man, i bet you need a focused degree to figure that one out
you: actually, you do to be any good
me: no, you don't. see peter jenning and Walter Cronkite.
you: You do not need to go to J-school to be a successful journalist.
TY
Instead of Journalism School (which you pay for) you would gain the skills necessary more quickly merely interning or working for a news agency (which would pay you). Jounalism school is an utter and complete waste of time and resourses on part of both the student and the university

You're not getting the point.
You could be a vet by watching enough discovery channel. That does not mean vet schools are worthless.
You cannot get the skills merely by interning. You would get an extremely narrow view of that agency's particular style, layouts, etc. With J-school you have a base knowledge that is broadly applicable, more so than purely interning.
I would also like to see how you get the credentials for the internship in the first place absent J-school.
Look, getting a first job in that industry is the hardest thing most people will ever do. But once you do that, rising in the industry is not that difficult.

Wilbon looks good compared to the other blacks on ESPN because most of them are semi-literate at best(Pleamaker,Dusty Baker,Screamin A,etc.)
He is articulate and well spoken however he rarely says anything insightful. Jumping on the bandwagon of whatever team is the ESPN flavor of the week is hardly the sign of intelligence or good journalism.
Overall though, if ESPN replaced all their personalities with Wilbons it would be a vast improvement.

Several points:
He went to St. Ignatius High, which means the AA started way before college.
Medill is a tough school. To have succeeded there at all means he's smart.
Journalism is a great undergrad degree. It teaches you how work in an office setting and presumably write. It also has a quasi-direct career path, unlike English or Poli-Sci or any liberal arts degree.

Making 160K to do a 5-minute sports cast on the evening news>>>>>> 160 being a paper shuffler.

yeah...being the proud (ha!) owner of a polisci degree from UG, journalism is far more useful than polisci. and, it's an interesting field...it teaches you how to write, and write in a way people like to read. not in a way like academia, where you write in an intellectually masturbatory manner.
i'm with you. he gets props for doing Medill.

Even other parts of it are great, too. Copy-editing keeps the lost art of understanding the English language.
Design and spatial thinking are good skills. I know a girl who went from a design focus to being an architect.

do a little research on media dissagregation. The idea is that people would rather read a blog by an american soldier and another by an Iraqi civilian than the reports by the AP stringer embedded with a unit. Since the internet explosion, now people can.
The skills required of journalists are changing. The dotcom crash is not analogous.

which you would do in a New York minute if you had the skills to do. You do not.
Instead, you research if some SEC filing was proper.
Ostensibly, the reason you went into law was to make money and/or accumulate prestige. As such, you have no basis to bash those who have succeeded in a career where they make more money and have more prestige for the reason of being in that career.

"who have i bashed by the way?"
Most sportswriters.
"For every wilbon, who i have not bashed in any shape or form, there are about 1000 ttt sportswriters who make shit."
So what? If that's what they want to do let them. The point I'm making is that being a successful sportswriter is not something someone stupid could do.
It's akin to calling everyone who did not go to a T6 law school stupid. They might not be as smart as the T6 types but are not stupid.

I don't think you understand all of what writers do. If you think they attend games and write stories and nothing else, you might have a point. But they do much more than that.
You have to write features, cover management, cover crime, cover family issues for players, cover politics with stadiums.
A 13-year old could not do that.
Newswriting generally is much more difficult than you are giving credit for.

"no i have a pretty good idea because i read my local sports section."
You have no idea about the amount of reporting that goes on in areas that are never printed.
A columnist is more of a people skills position. You need a lot of people to care what you have to say. To develop that rapport is a marketable talent, maybe not requiring raw intelligence but certainly a scarce skill. It's similar to a trial lawyer.
Everyone in the world think they can be a journalist and do a better job than those in the field. Few people actually know what goes on.

That's not the point at all. Standardized tests measure intelligence and knowledge. Those things don't matter for several very high paying professions. But the fact that those professions exist doesn't mean AA is justified. What do you not understand?
I'm not necessarily bashing sports writers, I'm just observing that they don't need to be smart. That's just a fact. I don't even know if they earn more or less than attorneys. Because they don't need to be smart, the SAT isn't a good predictor of someone's suitability to be a sports writer.

Becoming highly regarded in journalism does not require a college degree. Peter Jennings did not have a college degree. Tom Brokaw failed out of Iowa before graduating from South Dakota. Dan Rather is a proud alum of Sam Houston state.
