Need ideas for an IB Extended Essay in Math

Date: August 5th, 2004 6:03 AM Author: comical lodge quadroon Subject: Need ideas for an IB Extended Essay in Math I'm planning to do an Extended Essay for IB in Math, but I have no idea what to choose as a topic. I'm an average math student, but in Math Higher Level. What is it that I could do with the knowledge I have?
My math teacher told me that it would be hard to write a paper in math unless you've done at least a bachelor's in math. But, IB does have an option for an extended essay in math. So, it can't be THAT hard. Well, the essay topic has to be very specific. For example: 1) Application of spherical geometry and trigonometry in predicted Lunar Eclipse. 2) An Analysis of the effect of alterations to the recursively defined equation of fractals.
But, I can't take those, as they've already been done. Oh, and the essay itself as the be between 2500-4000 words. So, I'll need enough to write about, and not only write, but a decent amount of mathematical content as well. Well, thank you for your input. It's truly appreciated. |

Well, I think the point of the Extended Essay is to get you to learn a significant amount of the topic on your own. For instance, I did my essay in English, and I learned A LOT about literary theory, character development, works through different scopes, etc, more so than I did in my English class. Which I guess is why the math EE is more difficult, because there is more to teach yourself with proofs and theorems and all that good stuff.

There are certain requirements that you have to follow etc, and the math covered seems to be really advanced. The two kids who have done math EEs at my school did them on chaos theory and game theory.
I think the reasons they offer the math EE are not only to be fair, but also for schools that are really math intensive, like magnet schools or schools outside the US where the national school systems make it so one can reach that level of math in high school. For instance, my high school can't offer the Higher Level math test becasue of how they design the math curriculum, but they are able to at other high schools.
That said, if you really want to do an Extended Essay in math, we shouldn't really stop you. |

Well, to answer some of your questions about why I'm doing it in math is because I just really love mathematics! And I'm prepared to learn the extra stuff necessary to do my essay as long as its not beyond my reach such as graduate level math, ya know?
My original field was Physics for the EE, but I know that I'm more skilled in Math than in Physics. But, if I can't do Math, I'll revert back to Physics. And the people who have done an EE in math, or know people who have, what did they get on their essays? And, how were their essays structured (if I'm not asking for too much)? Oh, and when is the EE due, anyways? And if anyone has anymore ideas, please feel free to state them! Heh. And I really like the rubics cube and chaos theory -- I know a little bit about them. But, the group theory, I'm not so familiar with, but I'll look it up. Thanks! |

The extended essay is due kinda late into the school year, but it helps if you get started over the break. Date: July 19th, 2005 11:34 AM Author: Shimmering principal's office really tough guy I think i know a guy who did an EE in math who did a comparison of path finding algorithsm.. not certain if it was in MATH and whether it was an EE at all...
in retrospect, it was not, at first, (we did a junior year projecT) but he did an expansion of it for his EE (i think) w/ more complicated algorithms and paths.
