I never told anyone this before. I'm in my Constitutional Law class and I see Justice Scalia walk in and he goes and sits at the podium. The whole place stops when Justice [censored] Scalia walks in.
Everybody closes their laptops. After a little while, there wasn't a journal meeting going 'cause all the gunners are in our classroom listening to him. Some are arguing with him, giving away their dignity to this guy to say "oh I argued with a Supreme Court Justice".
And you know what I did? I raised my hand and turned on my mic. I know you're thinking "nah you need months of research and a bar card to argue right with a guy like that". Well I had my pocket copy of the Constitution, but I had to know. I played it cool for awhile, nodded along through most of his points, but then I went for the kill.
You're thinking "McCulloch v. Maryland or Marbury v. Madison?". Nothing. I made up the precedent. He quoted Reinquist. I decided, you know, I don't care about reputation. I'm just gonna outdebate this guy. This time. I cite Article III. And he just comes right back at me with the Federalist Papers trying to bully me like I'm some [censored] 1L. I hesitate for two seconds and quote something he never heard of. And he makes a move toward his briefcase and shuffles through his papers. And then he turned off his mic. I took it down. "Unpublished Marshall dissent footnote?" he asked. "Sorry Anton, I don't remember". I got up and walked to the registrar.
I argued with the best and I won.

This is based on the Matt Damon Johnny Chan story from Rounders, right?

Yeah, agreed. Inconsistent or not, it is not something that you should literally get angry about. You should also remember that, before lambasting someone for something, you should check to make sure that you're correct about it, otherwise you look like a dick. now you're blaming the OP for your glaring error.
Nice.

My gut reaction to this is that it's really stupid. I'm not sure why I have this reaction. I think it's a rejection of the idea that law can be reduced to a mano-a-mano challenge the way that poker can. Also, I think I'm in total disbelief that a law student could ever "out-debate" a sitting Supreme Court Justice in his prime. The fact that someone would even suggest that this is possible smacks of gunnerism. But maybe I'm putting to much thought into this.

"Michael:Played tight for an hour, folded mostly. But then I made a score...Rags, man, I had nothing. But I said 'I'm gonna outplay this guy. I'm gonna outplay this guy, this hand.' He raises, so I re-raise, and he just comes back over the top of me like I'm some fucking tourist. Reraise. And he makes a move for his checks, and then he looks at me, and he mucked it, I took it down. 'Did you have it?'. Sorry, John, I don't remember... I sat with the best, and I beat the best."
