Construction quality and after-sales service are far superior to designer bags in the same price range. However, the value of the materials (namely, the canvasses or stamped leathers) is relatively low. But then, the leather used in most designer bags is abysmal anyway. At least Louis Vuitton makes its own stuff in its own factories and will able to do factory repairs on your bag in the future.
Many will tell you that they are ostentatious, tacky, etc. However, I would suggest it's more important that you understand what you're truly getting for your dollar and buy it if you like it. In the designer bag world, you can do a lot worse value-wise than Louis Vuitton.

My fiancee and mother have Louis Vuitton bags and luggage. As with all luxury items, it's difficult to assess what it should be 'worth' to you. That being said, I think Louis Vuitton stands out amongst many of the fashion brands it competes with; it is a manufacturer and not merely a designer. For $600, it is difficult to think of something better made that is readily available.
The bag you picked is classic, but be forewarned that it can be difficult to use since it is so large inside and has no inner compartments to separate things. My fiancee has that problem with her Speedy and complains about it all the time.

Now, *that's* a trendy bag, and the leather looks like crap. If you want classic, that's not it. Forms should be kept simple, and ornamentation minimal.
Notice how the bag's design incorporates seams that allow the manufacturer to assemble together several pieces of leather rather than use one high quality piece.

lol you clearly know nothing about handbags, and you can hardly tell the quality of a leather by just looking at a picture.
the ysl muse bag is a classic bag that is much better quality than a $600 LV speedy. it is double stitched, by hand. and it certainly not trendy at all, given that it has no bells and whistles.
LV does make quality handbags, but those are generally not usually under $1000 (or more like $2000).

'Double stitched, by hand' is a contradiction. Double-stitching typically signifies machine sewing. To attach two pieces of leather or cloth to each other, you must make two lines of stitches: one line to attach the two pieces, another line to bind the seam allowances to one side or another. 'Double-stitching' is a cost-saving method of construction: a machine is used to do two parallel lines of stitching at the same time. Thus, two lines appear on the exterior of the bag or garment (hence, it's called 'double-stitched'). It is far costlier to do single-needle stitching: the machine does each line one at a time so that only one line of stitches appears externally. It makes no sense to double-stitch by hand, mostly because it's undesirable, but also because it's not feasible to stitch two lines at the same time by hand.
All that being said, the stitching on this bag is entirely done by machine. That's not to say a person isn't handling the machine, but the stitches are far too uniform to be hand-stitched. Hand-stitching this bag would increase the cost by multiples, and, given the design, might not even be preferable.
I can judge the leather quality because: (1) I've looked as YSL bags upclose, and (2) the quality (or lack thereof) is apparent from the online photo. Notice that the graining in the leather is highly irregular and there are wrinkles that were set in before tanning. I applaud YSL for not using corrected-grain leather, but unfortunately their honesty is also revealing.
What is less obvious in the photo and more apparent in person is that the leather is chemical tanned, as opposed to vegetable tanned. Chemical tanning produces an unnatural sheen that can make leather look almost like plastic. In contrast, good leather has some depth to it. Here, all you see is the leather's surface.

no, i don't own a bag. i'm a dude. i've got a wallet, belt, and pair of shoes that my ex got me.
shoes are pretty decent. wallet has been replaced by LV free of charge several times--but it is not extremely high quality. Belt i don't care for, but seems to be made decently.

$620 is a rip off to pay for it. it is certainly a better value than coach or cole haan or whatever else mid-range bags that now sell for up to $500-600, but never ever pay retail price for handbags -- they are simply not worth the money.
my recommendation is to wait for a $1000 bag to go on sale for $500.

LV bags are ugly. They are so ugly that the only reason I can conceive of anyone wanting them is because of the brand name. And that's a bad reason to want a bag in my opinion.
