Is there a difference?
Since you guys are talking about TTTs like me, I guess I should ask.
With this decision to make, I should probably just kill myself, but failing that where do I have the best shot at 100k+/year?
After accounting for scholarships/residency, they all cost about the same in the 20-30k/year range (Wisconsin cheapest, WUSTL most expensive).
If I get into GW (likely with no $) should I bite the bullet and gun over there?
I guess I should do the WUSTL but it looks like Illinois does better in Chicago.
They are all about top 25% or bust for a decent job, 15% for a transfer up? How much do these numbers vary between them?

I'm from the midwest and I have a high LSAT (isn't this obvious?)....but I got a TTT GPA and so I don't think Northwestern is going to take me.
I don't really give a fuck about geography. Just want a job, pay off my debts, and maybe eventually work for local government. A bigger city would be better than a smaller one. I like Chicago.
I like W&L and the South, actually, but I don't have ties down there so that could hurt me.
I don't think most 0Ls have caught on to the new "LRAP for all" law that makes life OK for anyone who goes into "public service." (When they do, it will be utterly impossible to get a public defender job anywhere.) That can be anything--a nonprofit or govt is fine, and I don't even know if you need to be working as a lawyer. So I'd be angling for a place that places well with the local DA/PD offices, or with nonprofits. I would think all these schools are about the same on that score.

I think you should reconsider whether you really don't give a fuck about geography, especially if you are straight of UG.
Once you're a hard-working lawyer, you won't have four-week vacations around christmastime to visit your family. There's a good chance you'll want to be close to your parents once you settle down, so that your kids can visit your grandparents regularly, so you can see your own parents regularly, etc.
Anyway I don't know about the details on job placement.

If you're above 170, I don't see why you're so low on your chances at GULC or NU. How bad is a "bad" GPA? <2.5? Believe it or not, it makes a difference, even if it has no effect on the 25% GPA reported to USNews.
You'll probably end up getting a 3/4 or full ride to WUSTL and Illinois. Both have decent placement as long as you're in the top 1/3 or so.

Yes, less than 2.5. I project a rejection from GULC and a WL reject from NU.
I haven't heard back from WUSTL and Illinois, but I think I'd have to at least have a 2.8 or something to get a 3/4 ride from either WUSTL or Illinois. Similar numbers (not on LSN, people I know) have gotten around $10-20k/year from WUSTL and Illinois.
On the other hand, my LSAT is in the high 170s (rather not out myself, there are probably only 2 or 3 other people like me applying to law school this year).

There have been numerous threads here detailing how far they lag compared to similar schools. Are they still in the T20? If so, they are far and away the worst.
You'd think they do well, but they only really feed to Chicago where they have to compete with like 10 other schools. You'd be better off almost anywhere else you could get into.

I'm sure it's bad but it can't be any worse than Iowa.
Illinois seems to do alright in Chicago (top 20%?) but if you don't get that are you basically unemployable or what? Same for WUSTL, it seems like people give WUSTL a lot of slack.
Is GW a lot better than these places or just a little better?

WUSTL is a crap shoot. I graduated in 2004. People had a very hard time finding jobs--2003 was much, much worse. I was around the median and had no offers to speak of. I had a number of friends in the top 1/3 without jobs. One was a JD/MBA. Basically, WUSTL doesn't place that well; although it's a step up from MN and IOWA.
One thing I should note is that being in the top 1/3 at WUSTL is very hard. Everyone is smart--there are a few morons, but not enough to automatically get you in a biglaw position. Also, everyone at WUSTL is gunning for biglaw. If you are below the top 1/3, career services is dead to you--as are most of your options. WUSTL is probably more expensive now than it was when I went through, so be careful. I know a lot of good, smart people who started with high expectations and became jaded when all said and done.

So you'd consider what you have "midlaw"? The whole idea of midlaw confuses me. There aren't many such firms, and they generally don't hire out of school, although I could be wrong about that.
So these top half people who have midlaw...like how much do they make? $80k? It just sounds like I would be networking desperately for 2 1/2 years to find a job like that, and once I got it, I'd still barely have enough to pay off the loans within a few years.
And with my TTT poli sci degree, there's no way I'm making anywhere near $50k.

I'm not midlaw; my area of the law is actually very small, so I don't have a lot of firm options. Midlaw, to me at least, are the second tier law firms. Basically, law firms in KC, STL, Omaha, Memphis, etc. Midlaw is around 100k a year. Not the big salaries associated with biglaw, but good money in cheap locals. In a bad economy, like we're in now, those jobs dry up fast.
Oh, you can make 50k easily. Just get yourself a good sales job. I have a friend who also had a commie major, and sold cars after college. He has a better car than me and makes good money for a guy in his 20s.

I'll give you the W&L perspective.
W&L actually has the best reach of any of the schools you mention, although without ties it'd be very hard to get a job in CA. If you want Chicago, though, there is a career fair each year in Chicago that all the top firms attend. Generally speaking, you can get good to great biglaw with top 20% and good interviewing. Top 1/3 and good interviewing also definitely gets you biglaw, probably in the vault v50-100 range. Outside of top 1/3, it's more of a crapshoot and depends on job market. I know this year we had people below median place at V100 firms. If you are top 1/3 you should have no problem at a good Chicago firm if you have ties.
I say top 20% for great biglaw (Cravath, Williams and Connolly will interview at that ranking, for example I think) because a lot of our top 10% transfers out each year.
On the downside, universal student opinion is that the career office isn't that good for you if you can't get biglaw--not because they don't want to help, though. They are quite nice. If you fall outside that range you are basically left on your own, and the jobs posted are mostly southern jobs.
Otherwise, it's a good school. It's obviously better than most of the schools you listed, and for Wustl, well wustl is TTT and over ranked.

That's interesting. I really want come up with a good reason to go to W&L, although I've heard less rosy opinions about their placement than that. For example if Williams & Connolly took top 20% W&L people, you'd think they'd be able to pull them from the grasp of, say, Hunton, no?
How does W&L do with PD/DA jobs in Virginia? With the new loan repayment law, I will have to gun for a PD/DA job if I don't get in the top 20%.
Also, how do you perceive the student quality at W&L? I know W&L likes high LSATs (otherwise I'd never get in) but I doubt it has as many high LSAT biglaw gunners as WUSTL (or even Illinois, for that matter).
Illinois has been my default choice all along, by the way, although I'm beginning to favor Wisconsin over it.

Yeah, but Wisconsin is a little cheaper, has fewer smart gunners, probably has similar biglaw placement, and I wouldn't have to take the bar. I'd rather be top 20% at Illinois, but I'd rather be median at Wisconsin, make sense?
Also Madison is an awesome town.

also, this guy is selling our friend a loaf of shit the size of Michael Jackson's teddy bear collection.
Saying Cravath 'interviews' top 20% at W&L is absurdly misleading if it's even true.
Honestly top 20% at W&L is probably lucky to be at Cadwalader, Charlotte.

I am fully aware that Cravath has no W&L graduates. Like, none, go look it up. So I guess you'd have to be top 0%.
That's not what I'm worried about though. If I'm in the top 1/3 at W&L, will I have a job that pays me decent money? I honestly don't know.

Here's the thing about W&L dude: In the last few years, every top 5%/LR EIC or lead articles editor has gone to Richmond midlaw. You KNOW those people can go wherever they want.
I visited and when I was applying to schools and have some friends there now. The school actually places very well, but the class is very small and the people who go there self-select to go to small Virginia/southeast firms.
Seriously, I'm told the atmosphere among students is pretty much anti-biglaw/pro-midlaw.

What makes you think top 5% and law review editor at washington and lee "can go wherever"?
There's no reason to think that at all. There are at least 30 other schools with top 5% and law review editor types just as good or better than washington and lee.

W&L has never been as low as 30. It usually around 20, but this past year we sucked it up and fell to 25. So that statement of yours is false.
The fact is, you apparently don't know anything about W&L, and you should probably stop misleading this person into thinking W&L is a shit school, when it is clearly a better school than all the listed ones except arguably wustl.

It's not anti-biglaw, but there are a lot of people who don't want to do it, certainly.
It is really odd that so many EICs of the law review end up at Hunton. Just goes to the quirkiness of the school, I guess.

Look, fucknut:
W&L's class is about 120 people, give or take. So for top 20%, that is 24 people. Of those 24, I think only 5 probably want to go to NYC on average every year. 5 more to DC, etc. Some want to do DA/PD work, and some want to do PI work. Many want to go back home to West Virginia, or Tennessee, or Georgia.
So your argument that there are so few people in top NYC firms because W&L is a shitty school, and I'm full of shit, is just not persuasive.

Those people aren't going to New York, or DC. We are talking about Wilmington mostly.
You are full of shit.
I doubt more than 3 people make more than 100k from Washington and Lee in a given year.
so you've got 24 people in the top 20%. that's 240 people in the last ten years, cutting it off to not bitch slap you too hard. So you've got 8 for 240 in those big firms. And at least 3 of them are in Wilmington. I'm done with you; you are flame and basically nothing you are saying is earnest advice.

Not saying it happens frequently, or if ever before (because I'm only a student now, not ten years ago ...). But we do have a 3L and a 2L going to Cravath. Maybe it's a first.
And yes, top 15-20% can get you PW, Skadden, Shearman, Weil, etc. Top third can get you Clifford Chance or White and Case or Mayer Brown, etc.

No, no, no! Mayer Brown won't look much beyond the magna/coif/LR kids at UIUC, which is the state school in its home market! And why would Shearman take a top 1/3 W&L student when it can have someone at the top of the class from Canada? So no!
Listen, I like W&L and all, and given my TTT options I may yet go there. At W&L, if I'm in the top third I'd like to have a very good shot at the likes of LeClair or McGuire in Richmond/NoVA. And I'd like to have a good shot at PD/DA offices in the bigger Southern cities.
I'd really appreciate if if someone who knows could tell me if that's a stretch or not. And I don't really know if it is.
I really could care less about Skadden, PW, Shearman, etc. I mean, if you don't work in the W&L career office, why else would you be familiar with such firms? I mean, I'm not a huge fan of NYC, and most W&L students seem like decent folks who don't like tight-fitting suits or gel in their hair, and such people usually don't want NYC anyway. I can say that much in W&L's defense.
And if any incredibly kind person has 1L outlines for W&L, WUSTL, or UIUC, let me know. I will trade you pr0n.

I was talking about Mayer Brown in NYC, not Chicago. I'm not really familiar with Chicago hiring statistics. I know a lot about NY statistics because I know people who are going there next year as first years and next summer as SAs.
You would have a good shot at most Richmond firms. I think Hunton has a 20% cut off (that's a guess--it may be lower or higher), which I think is a lot stricter than the other Richmond firms. The trouble with Richmond is they really do want you to show some connection to the city, and I'd imagine that to be the case unless you went to the University of Richmond. It's a tough market to break unless you're from VA.
I think PD/DA in VA would be fairly easy to get, as W&L is one of their preferred schools, and I doubt they'd want you to show connections as much (that's a guess, though).
And you're right, we don't have many guido-esque people here. We have a lot of southerners.
And you don't need outlines now. That's just absurd gunnery.

Well, let me be clear: W&C will look at someone in the top 20%, but the person would also have to be an incredible interviewer, etc, to get the job. No W&L student has actually gone to W&C in recent years, but I do think it's a possibility. On the other hand, there is a 3L and a 2L going to Cravath, which, while only one person, you have to consider that our class size is about 120 people and people spread out across the country.
The deal with Hunton is either you are from VA originally, so it's an obvious choice, or they bring you in 1L summer if you have good grades, and you love it there and stay. Also, even though I don't like Richmond particularly, Hunton is a solid firm--just not in NYC or DC--but in the south it's huge. And it has giant tobacco stuff it handles.
W&L has great placement with PD/DA jobs if you want to do that sort of thing. Especially in VA.
Student quality is really high, although, as with most law schools, there are always some people who you wonder how they got in. I think student quality is probably higher than at comparably ranked law schools because W&L, more than other schools, throws A TON of money at students who get into GULC or Penn or Duke or whatever--because otherwise they'd never come here.

I have horrible UG grades so I am wary about catching any kind of paid gig for 1L summer, because those (I think) usually ask you for a UG transcript.
I'm not from VA. I hope that doesn't close doors that otherwise might be open.
Basically, if I go to W&L, I'll feel most comfortable if I know that as long as I'm top third or so, I can make the $100k/year or whatever I'd need to pay off the debt. I don't care if that's in Richmond, NoVA, or some other random place in the South, or really anywhere else. Lower-level NYC biglaw would do the trick, but they generally don't go to W&L OCI, so I have a feeling I would be out of luck there unless I *hustled*.
W&L would cost me about $20-30k more total than Wisconsin, and I have a hard time convincing myself that it would be worth it.

That's the stupidest fuckin thing I've ever heard. It's not worth it. Not. Even. Close.
In fact it's highly debatable if W&L is better at all. Washington and Lee is a top 30 school. So is Wisconsin. Trust me, no matter what people have been telling you Cravath does NOT hire top 20% at w&l. In fact I would be fucking shocked if they hired outside the top 2. Not 2%. 2.

That other guy was harping about W&L and Cravath and it was very head-exploding. I want to avoid NYC if possible.
The South is fine by me but I don't have ties anywhere in the South (except maybe Nashville). If I don't make the top 20%, then what? Can I at least clear 70-80k? I have serious doubts about that given my lack of ties.
Other than Atlanta, insurance defense in the South doesn't pay very well, and lots of the better govt jobs in VA are taken by UVA grads, so I don't really know what I'd do if I didn't make top 20%.

1L summer positions at firms will look only at your fall grades. So don't worry about that. W&L only places 1Ls at firms in Richmond and the like. But don't worry about having bad UG grades. That said, only a couple people get 1L summer positions at firms.
Doesn't matter if you aren't from VA: the obvious line is that you went to W&L so you could practice in VA because you've been there before or you have family here or other nonsense.
As for NYC, we have a job fair there that a bunch of students go to, and a bunch of fairly top NYC firms go to. A range of firms at this year's fair included Cravath, Skadden, Weil, Paul Weiss, Shearman, Clifford Chance, on down. The only problem with these job fairs is it's pay your own way to city in question. But you can definitely get plenty of offers from NYC shops.
The price thing is tough, and that's really a personal decision. I'd say it's worth it. Wisconsin is a good school, but it's not quite at the same level as W&L, or Wustl, or GW, BC, etc.

That's fine, but I'm looking for something along the lines of, I was top half and I make over $100k, or not.
I haven't heard any of the horror stories from W&L that I've heard from a bunch of other schools, but that might also be due to the small class size.
How many sections are there? Can you get a pretty good idea of who your 1L professors are going to be months in advance, because of the small size?

There are no sections ... it's that small. The closest thing I guess to a section would be you are divided up a bit for Burks, which is the writing requirement of 1L year.
I honestly don't remember when I found out about my professors. But because W&L is so small, you can get to know any of your professors pretty easily.

You acknowledge that I'm right and then say I'm uninformed? Nice.
Also, you get the nice benefit of having 'top students' to compete against making 'the grades' all the harder to get. And btw, getting 'the grades' at pretty much any T1 means you are in relatively good shape, whether that's Iowa, Tulane, WUSTL, Minn, Wisc, whatever.
W&L doesn't sound like the best of all worlds, it sounds like the worst.

I'll admit it can be a problem in some ways. For instance, getting a job in California is quite difficult, because few people have heard of the school out there. It can also be a problem, I think, firms that do not recruit at W&L -- top firms, that is. So, while a W&L can get Cravath or Skadden or Weil, he may have trouble with SullCrom, DPW, or Cleary. But, in the end, that's not really a big deal.
And as for top students and grades, it's like any other school: top third is doable for the average student if they work hard enough, top 10% is hard, middle is, well, middle, and bottom of the class you either aren't too bright are you didn't study much.

You guys are doing so great at Cravath, Skadden and Weil.

Still working on getting an attorney at Cravath or Weil though, even a staff attorney. Keep on plugging.

Here's a fuckin' fact: You have to be top 20% if you want to work at Cravath at Virginia. Which is a whole fucking lot better than Washington and Lee.
Also here's another fact: Just because they interview a certain number of people as a favor to your career services office (where you probably work) doesn't mean they are going to hire any of those people.

Neither of your facts counters what I just said.
Cravath does hire from the top 20% at W&L. Now, that doesn't mean you don't have to fucking kill your interview, or maybe have good extracurricular shit, but they do hire top 20%. I'm sorry if this bruises your overblown ego, but, son, you are just going to have to get used to it.

W&L is a pathetic disgrace. It's amazing anyone thinks it's remotely good. W&L placement is HILARIOUSLY bad. They're also one of the loser schools that sends a million fee waivers out and rejects everyone who applies so that they can bump their USNews ranking. Anyone who applies to or attends this toilet deserves what they get (which on the job front will be basically nothing).

i was mistaken and i apologize. It turns out WUSTL has way more west coast firms interviewing on campus than I had thought. a quick glance at nalp directory shows way more than 5 firms. For instance they have:
Foley
Heller
Ropes
Shook
Winston
Kolisch
To name just a few....
Oh wait, no, that's all of them. Wait, wtf? Seriously? THey literally only have 6 west coast firms? Oh and Kolisch is an OREGON firm, not even CA. Oh shit. OP, you should kill yourself.
btw, WUSTL has 181 firms. Even GfuckingW has almost THREE TIMES AS MANY EMPLOYERS COMING ON CAMPUS. 541 versus 184.
Then again, what do I know, i didn't major in math. I majored in miracles, and I still believe in those too.

I'm looking at a few of these. Unless you want clerking options, MLPS for sure, or plan to be in the top 10-15%, Minnesota should be out.
I've been doing a lot of research on Illinois vs WUSTL vs Wisco for Chicago. UIUC > Wisco=WUSTL. Even then, I think the OP hit it on the head: would rather be top 20% @ UIUC but median at Wisconsin. I'm sitting on wads of cash @ Wisco so I've taken a liking in the last few days...

I'm curious about the UMN clerkship #. How much of that is federal? I know a lot of lower ranked schools say that they have high clerkship rates but what they don't tell you is that most of them are at the state/muni level.

I think that clerkship talk about UMN stems from one year (2005?) when UMN just had a huge shitload of federal clerks. If I'm not mistaken, things quickly went back to normal the next year.
I grew up in Minnesota and if I had a choice of any city, it would probably be Minneapolis. Minneapolis biglaw pays significantly less than Chicago biglaw, though, and there are very few 100k+ firms there. Also, UMN is a large school, and Minneapolis is a comparatively popular market among T14 students for its size.
So the big Minneapolis firms can choose to be very picky. I just don't think there are enough biglaw jobs in Minnesota to feed the entire top quarter of UMN's class.
Oddly enough, if I do well at WUSTL, I might have a better shot at a big Minneapolis firm rank-for-rank vs. UMN because the firm sees the schools as equals and would already have like 10 summers from UMN. But then again, if I do well at WUSTL, I might HAVE to look at a market like Minneapolis because WUSTL doesn't do that well in Chicago/NYC/DC. And WUSTL is pricey and filled with high LSAT competition.
You could say the same thing about GW, but at least there the top 35% is safe. I would feel more safe in the top 35% at GW vs. the top 33% at WUSTL, and getting either one of those is probably equally difficult.

If you look at the lawfirmaddict stats, which is really the only way to find stats about this other than firm bios, WUSTL seems to send about as many people as Wisconsin or Iowa to the Chicago firms they tracked. Now, they only tracked V100s and their info wasn't necessarily complete, but those caveats should apply to all the other schools too.
Their NYC placement was not much better, just a few people.
Ciolli from a few years ago, again, had them performing just about as well as Iowa.
So there's a huge disconnect between the claim that top 1/3 at WUSTL get biglaw vs. anything you can find in stats or firm bios. So that's a lot of invisible WUSTL associates hiding out there somewhere.
Now before you go on a big tangent telling me where all those associates are hiding, I am very skeptical about you. You seem like a professional WUSTL shill with seemingly nothing better to do than start threads about WUSTL's great job placement on LSD, TLS, on here...
I mean, the one bright spot about WUSTL placement I can find is it seems to have a lot of cum laude (but not magna or summa) grads in secondary Midwest firms making probably around $90k. So I suppose those are the rest of the top third that get shut out of the 160k firms in Chi/NYC.
It's clear to me that WUSTL guns for top students and will stop at nothing to get them. Maybe you work for them and you know. So why can't you work the same magic to get your students employed?

Well, I guess. But those numbers deserve a closer look.
First, WUSTL always has--even back then--attracted mostly people from outside Missouri. And yet Ciolli has the majority (or plurality, I don't remember, either way it was a lot) of WUSTLers staying in the region that includes Missouri (and NOT Chicago), getting biglaw at a rate of about 12%.
Then it sent a smaller portion to the region that includes Chicago, getting biglaw at a rate of about 30%. But those are the ones lucky enough to get out of Missouri! They most certainly had a higher class rank than the much larger number that stayed in Missouri. Iowa sent a smaller number to the Chicago region, but they got biglaw at about 40%. You certainly wouldn't say Iowa is a 40% biglaw school either.
Yes, WUSTL did send more people to NYC or DC than Iowa or Minnesota. But at least half the students at IA/MN/WI are from that state, and WUSTL draws from all over. Also, the biglaw percentages for WUSTL in NYC or DC are comparable to the BU, BC, GW type schools, which send much larger parts of their classes to those regions. WUSTL--->NYC is at least half non-biglaw (doc review?) if you believe Ciolli.
I agree that WUSTL is a decent name, and I'm attracted to that, but I can't think of a major market where it places really well.
It would make LOGICAL sense for Stroock or Cadwalader to prefer a top 1/3 WUSTL student to a top 1/3 Fordham student, because WUSTL students are better, but in reality it doesn't really play out that way.

Dude, why all the hate? You're not even in school yet! And if you have such great placement concerns about WUSTL, why not eliminate them from your competitive set?
At any rate, my goal is to not act as a shill but just to give my [non-scientific] accounts of what I see and hear at WUSTL. In fact, I routinely encourage others to go to T10 over WUSTL's money (see the UVA thread on here). I would have gone to T10 over WUSTL if I had the option.
All I can tell you is that among my circle of friends & acquaintances, most everyone either got their first choice of market (including all of the aforementioned ones) or had no preference in market and are making market salaries. I, of course, do not know everyone.
I do know people who don't have jobs and while I don't know for a fact why that is, I generally think they are poor interviewers, had too narrow a focus on practice groups/locales (wanting/needing to practice in STL is often times a death knell), did not try real hard after not getting anything out of OCI, or a combination of these factors. It is hard to gauge the effect of grades because we do not rank outside of the top 1/3rd and no one really talks about grades. You see people get CALIs and interviews for clerkships but that's about it.

Well I'll clarify my overarching feelings about WUSTL that I have been trying to communicate on the boards:
1. The vast majority of my friends/acquintances got the jobs they wanted, most in major markets. This may or may not be representative of the student body as a whole as I don't know everyone in my class and there is not a whole lot of talk about such things.
2. There is no mass hysteria around school about people not having jobs or having to settle for working in some place like Dubuque. Again, I don't know everyone and it is just not something people talk about.
3. It is possible to get biglaw outside of the top 1/3rd if you do some legwork. However, jobs will not fall into your lap with that kind of ranking.
4. St. Louis/MO as a whole is -not- the fallback for WUSTL grads. The St. Louis bar looks upon WUSTL grads as carpetbaggers unless you have close ties. The biggest markets for us, in order are Chicago, NYC, and D.C. Now how we place in those markets relative to our competitive set is something I cannot answer.
5. All of this is anecdotal. For better or worse WUSTL is very laid back and there is little talk of grades so it is difficult to correlate grades to anything.
6. If you have the option, I would suggest T10 over WUSTL w/ $$$ for the job security they provide. For T11 - 18, I'd say it was a coin flip depending on your needs/wants. I might also suggest a similarly ranked school if you really want a certain market (e.g., Fordham for NYC).
7. I have no vested interest/do not care if someone attends WUSTL or not. I'm just trying to offer my experiences so that people can make an educated decision. There are things that are not great here relatively to other schools but all in all I have enjoyed my time here.

Here's a weird thing I just noticed.
I was under the impression that the law school did not give latin honors. It was not listed on the website the last time I was curious about this and I never saw anyone's bios with them. Now I see them on the website: http://law.wustl.edu/registrar/index.asp?id=2550.
The most recent copy of the BCG guide does not have them listed and that's just a copy and paste from the same website. http://bcgsearch.com/pdf/BCG_Law_Schoool_Guide_2007.pdf
Not sure what is going on with that and will have to do some research.

Any explanation for the low GPA? I'm a massive splitter, but managed to get above the 3.0 deathblow area after realizing how much of a difference it would make.
Anyway, before I got my LSAT score and realized I had a legitimate shot at T14, I looked into where I would like to go with my projected LSAT score (high 167-170). I was almost certain that GW was by far the best bet, followed by Fordham and ND. Luckily, I scored much higher. Still, I don't think any of these schools are killself worthy.

When you look at WUSTL3L's replies, you should take into account that he/she was in a very good clerkship year. I think the 2007 summer class was one of the biggest in recent memory. Even with that, WUSTL3L said that biglaw is tough for people outside the top 1/3.
I can tell you that WUSTL in a bad economy can be tough. There where people in the top 1/3 without jobs, let alone the bottom two-thirds. Plenty of law review people were also unemployed. This isn't to scary you, but be mindful that jobs do dry up in a bad economy and you'll have to repay back your loans regardless. Maybe things will be good when you'll interview for a 2L clerkship. WUSTL is not quite national, but probably more so than when I went through. As I said before, you are going to compete against some very tough competition for a top 1/3 spot. A lot of assiduous east coast kids. My guess is W&L is little more laid back and it's easier to be a top student.
I'm originally from MN too. The MN job market is horrendous. We can talk about that if you'd like.

I'm also afraid it may be harder now than ever to get to the top of any good law school. Just like people are studying more and more for the LSAT, driving up scores, every year people find more accurate information about LS and how to prepare/perform. And the people at the top of any good school are going to have good skills.
Also, there isn't much of a gap between the quality of T14 students and those who just missed T14. If you get a 168 on the LSAT, you might get shut out of the T14 but you are still going to be a tough competitor in LS.

maybe there isn't a gap, but there is a gap in perception.
The difference between Penn and NYU and harvard is 3 LSAT questions. However the difference between them at oci is huge, especially in secondary markets. The Harvard guy basically always wins.

This post might even get longer if there's another spat like up above.
MPLS is beyond oversaturate. First, there are the four law schools dumping students in the market, U of M is the best, but only top 20-25 are competitive for market. The worst offender is this TTT called Billy Mitchell, basically a diploma mill that puts out hundreds and hundreds of lawyers a year. Even worse, there is little to no turnover in MPLS. A lot of people want to move there. MPLS law firms generally don't leverage, though there's some attrition.
If I were you, I would cast as wide as net as possible to get a job. You can always lateral to MPLS if you don't end up getting a clerkship.

That's what I'm thinking. I'm willing to not live in Minneapolis.
Minneapolis and Milwaukee firms seem to have almost as many William Mitchell or Marquette grads as UMN/Wisconsin grads. I have no idea why it works that way. I know a guy who goes to Mitchell and he seems borderline retarded.
How did people fare getting government jobs out of WUSTL when you were there? Did it seem to funnel people to the local PD/DA/AG offices with any regularity? Combine the down economy with the new loan repayment law and there will be a mad scramble for govt jobs, so I'd prefer a school with deep local govt ties. You would think the state schools would have an advantage there.

Were they top of class/law review types?
About that, someone told me your law review is huge and not really limited to the top students. Is this true?

Again, hard to gauge class rank but my best guess is top 15 - 25%. Not rockstars but not slouches either.
Yes, the law review takes a lot of write ons. I don't know the exact number or how it relates to other schools, though.
