I live in a big city and pay $2400 for a 2br. Have a roommate who's like a brother to me in the non-ghey sense.

1. I don't pretend, 2. I don't call you poors (unless it is some douche like jjc who deserves it).
As for the other guy, yes my parents pay my rent now, but I will be stuck paying it next year, and no I am not looking forward to that large a % of my earnings vanishing.

How many bedrooms is your place? You could get a roommate if you're worried about your massive rent.
Did your parents pay your entire way through law school?

Bonuses will not be 40K unless you are at one of the top firms, which clearly you won't be. Over half of your take home pay will go SOLEY to rent. That is sans utilities, transportation, clothing, etc.
Not enough money dood. Sorry.

See my post below about all other expenses. You aren't close to thinking about him.
His health coverage alone will be another $3.5K

That equals 98K in take home pay a year.
He is then blowing 48K on rent alone.
That leaves him 50K to pay all his other expenses. It doesn't even havehis health coverage yet. Think about all his other expenses:

Care to re-calculate for 200k, or are you going to continue pretending 160k is the total.
Even with your 160k #, what is unreasonable about 50k/year afer taxes and rent? I already said famly will pay for all vacations, so whatever # of week I manage to take, those are essentially free. I already have like 12 suits and 80+ dress shirts, I don't imagine i'll be spending that much on clothes. This leaves food/booze and club memberships. I am assuming work will preclude me from having a ton of time for nice dinner and nights out. Not to mention, it's not like my family is going to let me get evicted if I run out of $

10K wouldn't even pay for bare necessity groceries. Come on.
Besides, this douche claims to spend 10K a month on partying.

I think you have a distorted sense of poor and middle class families. For them 10k is more than enough to get by.
I can't care about this douche. I just think that in general, it is POSSIBLE to live in New York on 50k after rent. Get real.

many NYers get by on 50K gross, so why the fuck would $50K after taxes and rent be too little? $4000 a month is more than enough to pay for food, clothes, insurance, and taxis.
Before law school, I took in $4,000 a month after taxes, insurance, and 401K. For $4,000 a month take home I paid for an apt in NYC (with a roommate) and paid for all my incidentals, and even managed to save for some vacations and law school. Trust me, once you are working, you won't know how to spend all your money because you spend all your time either at the office or sleeping.

I'm moving in with my bf and we haven't yet agreed what I'll be paying in rent. He owns his place so I'll probably pay some percentage of his mortgage payment.
