Mobar at the Mandarin is the best, hands down...

Rosebar, but thats probably too much of a scene to deal with

The new Greenwich Hotel is pretty good.

Soho Grand and Tribeca Grand are traditional standbys.

Gansevoort is typically too B&T but is sort of cool on a weeknight.

I don't know if the various bars at the Maratime count, they are kind of clubby.

There are a lot of old school hotel bars in Midtown. Bull and Bear at the Waldorf is full of cougars.

this might be the first "best of" nightlife list on this board that actually includes places i've enjoyed going to. haha.

we usually go to the rooftop bars in the summer -- rareview is my favorite, and we've gone to penn top a few times this summer and it was a lot of fun. Is that considered "cool" or "TTT"?

calling those drinks "pricey" is an understatement. but i always get a good pour, which you can't say about a lot of places.

i like the rooftop bars for the ambience and views, but the women i've seen there are pretty unattractive.

rare is TTT; any murray hill joint is worthless.

salon de ning is nice, but the crowd is too old for my tastes.

i went to highbar, which just opened on west 48th, and it sucked as well.

I figured people would hate on rareview (because I like it a lot), but that's actually one place where we usually see a lot of good looking girls. not the "omg she must be a model!" type, but the "damn that girl looks like she'd be insane in bed" type. and fortuntely, i prefer the latter.

So you mean, yes, Thursday does count as a weekday?

I ask because I tend to start my weekends a day early lol... like, I'll go to work on Friday obviously, but sometimes I'll stay out extremely late on a Thursday, which I won't normally do Su-W.

The crowd was sorta older than most places, but I went with a guy friend (who was trying to parlay it into a date, I now realize) who's in his 30s so I guess that was more his scene. It was mostly well dressed professional looking people in their 30s, I think. There were a few golddigger-looking girls in their 20s or so who started to come in later (we were there pretty early... around 9, left around 11:30, I think).

All in all, one of my fav. bar experiences. Their drinks are $14, but I love them. Lots of exotic/unique cocktails, esp. if you like sake.

that's true. you're pretty much limited to les, east village, soho, west village, for good non-B&T nightlife nowadays.

Gramercy also, and I think this new venue at the Plaza has promise. There are still some viable places left in the mess like B8 and 1OAK as well.

yes; i forgot about gramercy.

is the new plaza venue the rose room? i think the guy who does upstairs is in charge of that place.

I think they are calling it Rose Club (way to be subtle about wanting to be the new Rose Bar!). Danny A is involved I believe. I absolutely HATE upstairs though

yeah that's it. i was there about 2 weeks ago for a belvedere tasting event. nice layout. interesting to see how it unfolds and what kind of crowd it attracts.

upstairs is a mixed bag. i still like it on sundays and mondays but on other days, it's been pretty mediocre. one of the biggest letdowns in nyc nightlife in the past year, along with kiss & fly.

I expected kiss&fly to suck (going into the old Aer space, really?). Upstairs was better when it first opened and less people knew about it (it was also just getting going during fashion week as I recall so the talent was high). Now it feels dirty, the bathroom lines are horrific and I really don't like the crowd. I think the Plaza can work if people prove willing to head uptown to drink (which is tougher because late night they'll end up back downtown).

kiss and fly was really hyped up and a part of me wants the meatpacking district to get revived.

my guess is the new plaza venue will be more of a spot to grab drinks after dinner, the 9-11 pm time slot.

I plan to use it in the 11-1am timeslot, when I use it.

i went there a couple of weeks ago. mixed crowd, some teenage girls, a few older guys, some hipsters etc. pretty good scene, i'd go back.

By nightlife do you mean clubs/lounges? There are more low-key localish bars that are certainly not B&T on both the UES and UWS.

lol at you insecure tools. I like the places I go, because they are the places my friends are at and where I have fun. It's not a big deal to go to these places, you losers make it a huge deal because you have a huge chip on your shoulder about the perceived exclusivity and specifically the excluding of you.

i don't derive my self-esteem from going to these venues. i personally HATE dancing and excessively loud music, so that rules out a lot of nightclubs. i do love plenty of dive bars, sports bars on gamedays, wine bars, and other laid back lounges that are not "exclusive." this whole debate started because insecure posters like jjc and a few others were constantly bashing nyc for being pretentious and having a mediocre nightlife.

lol. right. obviously you don't care. obviously it's not a big deal. that's why you're throwing a hissy fit in the other thread about how pathetic it is to go before the doorman arrives.

You don't see how inherently pathetic it is? I feel sorry for that guy. He wants to be part of a scene that he is not a part of so deperately that he goes to an empty bar and sits there waiting for 4 hours alone so he can pretend he belongs when it fills up. That is pretty much the definition of pathetic.

Everyone on xoxo has their specific topics they have particular knowledge on. Valen appears in every thread on Russia or military hardware, Rowan shows up in every relationship advice thread, I comment in nightlife threads. I am not going to pretend to be an expert on things i'm not qualified to comment on (like most of xoxo does), but I like to share my insight when I actually have valid information. However, when xoxo doesn't like what they hear, they want to discount that and believe what they want to believe. I will continue offering my opinions.
