I know lots of great people who moved to NYC after college, guys and girls. Great people, good looking, with great jobs. Yet EVERY single one of them are pretty much always single, even well into their 30s. Sure, going out and hooking up is fun for a while, but the game gets old eventually and it would seem that intelligent, good people would eventually want to settle down. Several of these friends have even lamented how they have pretty much lost hope of finding anyone to settle down with in NYC, because of the whole "there's always something better for me out there" mentality among everyone in the city. But they can't leave because they have good jobs.
Seriously, what is it about NYC that makes everyone perpetually single?

By 40 all of your friends will be married with a kid. Shit is just pushed out 5-10 years in NY.

Let's break this down issue by issue.
First, why do people get married? Companionship and to raise families.
1. It's extremely expensive and difficult for most people to raise families in New York before their early thirties, especially given the high standards working professionals typically expect of themselves. Ask your typical 28 year old professional in NY if she wants to raise kids in her 1-BR apt or her share, chances are that's simply a non-starter. If she wants to be a stay at home mom, her husband typically won't be able to afford a suitable apartment until he is in his 30s. However, a lot of women her age are rearing children in the burbs. Most professionals in NY want to establish their careers, which means working til the early 30's without children. Then, they can afford all of the stuff NYers deem is necessary to raise children (the apartment, nannies, preschools, etc). I know some hardy folks who have kids at 29 or 30, but those are pioneers and few and far between. Even the people I know from college who are getting married at 25 or so don't plan on having kids in the near future in NY.
2. Given that its impractical to raise families until later, the other reason for marriage is companionship, love, sex, etc. In NY, there are hundreds of thousands of eligible people, and this pool of people change frequently. In addition, there are thousands of things to do on dates, new restaurants, new shows, etc. A lot of women in NY are simply date whores, and a lot of dudes in NY are simply variety whores. It takes a hearty couple that pays attention to and goes out to all of the new restaurants, attractions, etc if you are married. Falling into a routine in NY for a number of years doesn't make much sense.

your analysis makes sense. nyc is expensive, so it doesn't make sense from a cost-benefit perspective to have kids or get married at age 27. i've noticed that there's so many couples here in chicago. most attractive girls i've met or talked to are either engaged or in serious relationships. and they're all under 25!
what do you mean by the pool of eligible people changing frequently in nyc?

Never forget that New York has an enormous surplus of single women. There are 200,000 more single women in NYC than men. For men who are making decent money, there are a lot of eligible mates.

since most NYC people are either unattractive, striverish, materialistic, or neurotic, it makes sense that most people are single. go to the south, chicago, or california, where people are attractive and pleasant, and you'll see that most are in relationships. HTMFH.

it's probably because they are physically ugly, and thus have a complicated time attracting mates willing to stay after the drugs wear down.

From what I've seen, people tend to be pickier than other cities. I'm guilty of it myself here.
I can find the smallest reason to reject someone because there's always someone else around the corner. Also, people don't tend to settle down here until their 30's and there isn't pressure to do so.
There's a stigma attached to being 30 and single in other cities that just doesn't attach in NYC.

It doesn't have to be a major world city for me to enjoy it.
I also like Minneapolis, it doesn't make it a world class city, now does it?
I am going to stop responding to you altogether. I really don't feel like you are up to having rational conversations and you interject your opinions to the point that you come off as completely insane. No offfense.
Where did I call it provincial and midwester, for example?

minneapolis is still a very large city.
how would you feel about living in, say, ft. wayne?

Minneapolis is surprisingly small. It's <400,000 people.
Never been to Ft. Wayne, but to be "world class", I would think it would at least attract a significant amount of tourism and have a good amount expats from other countries that reside there.

WTF are you talking about? my entire contention was that 99% of people in Chicago and NYC dress the same, a point that even you agreed on.
How does Chicago feel "small" when manhattan is a tiny 23 square mile island?

Sigh. I never agreed on the 99% number. Like most things, you deal with the middle 50% and I am talking the high end.
NYC women are much more into the high end shopping and boutiques. I've pointed this out before.
There is a reason that I know more about the fashion scene in NYC than I care to admit, but I have been way too involved in it than is warranted by someone that isn't in the in the industry.

Chicago is the undisputed leader in trading of corn, soybean, pork belly, wheat, and other commodities.
but due to the rise in electronic trading and computer driven strategies, it's no longer essential to physically be in chicago to trade the various products offered by CME and CBOT.
aside from citadel, chicago just doesn't have that many high-end options in finance.

Also, I'm not sure if LA is better for women exactly. There are more guys, but the women are also hotter. I don't think the average NYC woman would be very competitive if she were suddenly transferred to the LA dating market.

I never said I was moving to LA. I don't drive that well for one, so I think that city is out.
I don't like NYC because it's expensive and it's not worth it. Even people who have really good jobs and work really hard have shitty apartments. Nightlife is expensive and not worth it. People are annoying. Men are assholes. People are superficial about ridiculous things. Etc. etc.

it must suck to be unattractive AND poor. if you were hot, you could enjoy the best of NYC since some guy will pay for you.
i know so many hotties in fashion, media, PR, etc., who don't make that much but go out to nice places like 5 times a week because they can always find a guy who will take them out.

I actually hate beer lol.
BTW, I didn't mean to say that NYC nightlife was "shitty." I misspoke. I meant to say that I didn't think it was worth how expensive it is. The amount of fun that I have in NYC is not astronomically greater than the amount of fun I've had in other random cities like Phoenix, Chicago, D.C. or Vegas and these other places are cheaper.

I tend to agree. I'm always shocked at how much cheaper it is in other cities. It's really about who you are with more than the venue.
I can have a shit time with certain friends because they are bitching about service at the Soho Grand when beer is $13 a pop and have a great time somewhere else with a different set of friends doing $1 beers on the LES.

Oh, I don't disagree. There's also a less than 0% chance that I'd want to bother.
All the same: I've been there, I've stayed there until quite late, and while the music and the atmosphere are of high quality, it is not vastly more entertaining than any number of other bars.

These are the self-respecting people you think would never show up an hour or two early? They'd pay 5k but not show up an hour or two before it gets poppin'? Nice logic.
Btw, hoping they will have fun later? I thought this was the hottest place in town. How many contradictions are you going to make, friend?

We stayed there most of the night, it got quite crowded but it by no means became model central.
I don't know what that nonsense about a chance to control the door is about. Bars are grateful for the 9:30 business. If they weren't, they'd have consistent door policies throughout the evening.

I went there when I was dating the banker, it's apparently a place he likes to go to. I didn't have anything to do with the planning, or thankfully, the paying.
I didn't think we were out of place, and as I said, I had a pretty good time and thought it was a nice place. But it was ultimately just a lounge, and if a person is dissatisfied with New York nightlife in general I don't think going there would change their minds.

Dude, what is your problem?
Your big thing is that you can only get into RoseBar the "honorable" way if you're incredibly rich and beautiful, right? Most people aren't incredibly rich and beautiful. Rowan said it's a nice place, with good music and drinks. If someone likes the place, and knows they couldn't pass the door test, what is so dishonorable about going when they know they can get in?
Is it dishonorable to get tickets to an expensive broadway show that you can't afford at TKTS? Or to go to an expensive restaurant for lunch instead of dinner?
Your mentality is exactly what turns me off to a lot of NY'ers, ESPECIALLY the type of people my friends from Yale and Stuyvesant like to date/associate themselves with..

it never occurred to you that maybe some people just prefer to go out earlier? say, people who actually work for a living? oh wait, lemme guess, working for a living isn't honorable either?
i have no problem kicking it until 4 am on a friday or saturday, but during the week a night out usually ends around 1. which means i'm out drinking around 8. so if dude likes rose bar what's wrong with him going early, if that's when he's out anyway? because you say it's not cool? or because he wouldn't be able to get in later, when he's not trying to anyway?

I think it's sad if the best things for you about a bar are the *other* people who are there. Most people enjoy going out to be with their friends (or get pussy if they're a guy, but Rowans ex was with his girlfriend so that's not an option).
For me, the most important things are:
not being too crowded
*good music*
creative/unusual cocktails
I couldn't care less about who the people at the other table are or what they're doing.

I don't know Rowan's ex, so I can't speak to his motives, but it sounded like they went as a couple. When you bring your gf to a bar/lounge you're usually more interested in spending time with/talking to her than observing the other people around you.
It didn't sound like they were waiting around trying to be part of the "in crowd." I think they went early because he likes the place and knew that was when they could get in. There are worse things than going to a bar at 9:30 and drinking for a few hours.

What other schools have clubs in NYC? UVA/Dartmouth are combined with Yale (note: A *ton* of the douchebags are from Dartmouth). And it seems like every guy I meet from UVA works at Legg Mason or a similar place and wears a striped button down shirt with jeans and loafers.

Ugh. i hate divulging personal information but i went to harvard. if your date is a regular at the harvard club happy hour, i most likely know him. don't worry though. if i do see you, i'm not going to freak you out by asking if you're blue smoke.
i have a lot of friends from yale as well as other ivies. i never thought they were particularly more pretentious than kids from other ivies. (although most wharton kids i've met have been unbearable).
all the ivies do have clubs, but i think harvard and penn are the only ones with their own separate buildings that they don't share with other schools.
your observation of uva alums is correct. but that's the fashion in the south. my ex-gf went there.

But all my friends tease me about this. They just tend to be more settled, experienced and worldly than most of the 25 year old guys I meet.
If you see me at the HC, just come up to me, whisper "White girls with asian guys" in my ear and slip away quietly.

the reason why reality and i got into this debate is because rowan sounded like she was an authority on rose bar and when pressed for details, certain inconsistencies came out. i personally could give a rat's ass about her social life or where she goes out. but if she's gonna make assessments on nyc nightlife, i'm going to ask for details.

3) only hot people are allowed in.
4) ugly hotel guests have a chance of getting in.
5) Rowan was lying about getting in
6) Rowan was mistaken about getting in.
7) Rowan snuck in (through the front door)
8) Rowan can't judge the quality of people there because she went there early.
9) Rowan can't judge teh quality of people there because even though she stayed late, she didn't fit in so it impacted her judgment.
10) It's pathetic that Bankers would try to bribe Damien with 5k would be turned away
11) Bankers have too much self-respect to go to Rose bar an hour or two earlier than peak hours.

Do you need to experience everything in life to know what would make you happy?
Perhaps my tastes would have been different if I grew up a beautiful social butterfly and developed a liking for having to attend tons of social events, having to shoot the shit with people all the time, girlier things like fashion and media, being around "trendy" people and the like, but now I'm pretty introverted, I'm pretty analytical and like to read and write a lot and I don't think I'd enjoy having to meet and socialize with new people all the time (as I would have to do in PR or fashion). Even if I woke up tomorrow looking like Angelina Jolie, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be happy with that sort of job or lifestyle.

Me: I don't think NYC's nightlife is worth the $.
You: only because you can't go to good places. If you were rich and hot you would like it.
Me: uh, no, I've had enough life experiences to know what's enjoyable to me.
You: You don't have credibility because you're not an elite model who has access to these things.
Me: So... only the hottest and richest people can decide that they don't like NYC?
BTW, I've eaten at a number of restaurants that you'd call "nice." They're restaurants... anyone who can pay can eat there. I've gone to a number of places that even reality would agree are "nice" through work, school-related things, organizations, dates, family and (gasp) even paying for myself on occasion.
As Rowan said, I really don't think RoseBar and 1OAK have such revolutionary drinks and music that they provide an unimaginable experience.

i've seen blue smoke's pics, and she's not attractive, just average. i don't know her, so i'm not going to engage in psychoanalysis, but from reading her posts, she does come across as bitter about her current circumstances in nyc. maybe she should move to atlanta, where you can live like a king on $40K/year.

LA is fake and tacky? this coming from the guy who lives in a city best known for sex and the city? even if what you say is true, at least the girls in LA are young and hot whereas the fake and tacky girls in NYC are ugly old spinsters in their 30s. i've been to the "hot" L.A. spots like les deux, area, winston's, harry's, ivar. they were good but not amazing. really sucks when lights come on at 1:30 and you're forced to leave the club.

people in NYC are type-A individuals, especially the yuppies, which means they're often a) ridiculously picky, b) not willing to admit they aren't as special as they think they are, and c) don't have a very balanced outlook on life (ie, obsessed with, for lack of a better phrase, keeping up with the joneses). when you have a city full of ivy league students etc. (of course these aren't the majority, but the mindset often is) because they feel no other city is "good" enough for them, of course you're not going to have the greatest dating scene

a lot of stuff. Industry/government is more of what the standard Randy Marsh view of a geologist is (going out in the field and looking at shit, taking measurements), although it can also encompass environmental consulting (telling companies not to do X because Y will happen to the surroundings). You can take as much or little chem or physics as you would like; biogeochemistry (studying chemistry of, say, rivers) borders on environmental science more than geological science so it's pretty hard to define what geological sciences actually are. Geophysicists can do anything from highly theoretical work on the core to analyzing earthquake data. Physical geochemists can look at a rock outcrop and analyze why you would get, say, iron here and titanium there (some of the most useful stuff for industry, but also hard as crap). Geo-biologists are typically people who do fossil stuff, or analyze deep sediments to find out shit about ancient environment conditions etc. I could go into even more detail but you get the point
Don't be fooled though; pure structural geology needs very little chem or physics, but it's still pretty hard to wrap your mind around the 3-D concepts. Intro geo classes at most schools are a joke, and ironically enough Brown has one of the more "real" intro geo classes. Usually our intro classes are a fucking joke

Hey, if you're fine with being an embarrassment to your family then its cool with me. I mainly feel for your parents. And your parents look down. And then the proud father asks: "so, don't you guys have a daughter too? [ Ball Crushing Dyke], right?" And your parents do their best to deflect their shame, but everyone knows its epic fail, much like their attempt at reproduction and breeding. That night, your father commends your mother for not crying that night. She responds, defeated, that she's all out of tears.

you have dumb, arbitrary standards for judging people. intelligent people don't have a problem with my lesbianism. if you were smarter, you'd get that my being female doesn't mean i have to date a male. but you've drank the 1950s kool aid.
having a dumb, short son must be pretty embarrassing for your parents. in fact, i bet your parent would prefer a lesbian daughter over dumb, short you.

"you have dumb, arbitrary standards for judging people"
I'm not talking about how I judge people. I'm just describing a scene that happens to parents like yours.
"intelligent people don't have a problem with my lesbianism."
Theoretically, yes. Much like you don't "have a problem" with people working at McDonalds until it happens to your kids.
"if you were smarter, you'd get that my being female doesn't mean i have to date a male."
I'll take strawmen for $100, Alex.
"but you've drank the 1950s kool aid."
Wasn't born nor was my family here in the 1950s. But every parent wants to see their kids in a good, happy relationship. Every father beems when his daughter marries that great guy she's been dating. I mean, not those who are fathers of lesbians, but you get the idea.
"having a dumb, short son must be pretty embarrassing for your parents."
No, my parents aren't retards, and we come from a background where being successful is much more important than being tall.

"No, my parents aren't retards, and we come from a background where being successful is much more important than being tall."
So do my parents, as a matter of fact. My parents do not judge my success by my ability to happily stick my penis in a female who will then squirt out some kids. They judge my "success" by my ability to take care of myself, have a job that I like and the ability to contribute to society in a meaningful way.

Right, because you're male.
But she isn't.

no, my parents didn't come from some filthy, 3rd world eastern european country like your's did. don't assume that normal americans share your toilet country values. they're quite happy with my career success.
russians aren't capable of rational thought, that's why people in the us are comparatively wealthy, while russia is the toilet of the world. you people are dumb enough to, in spite of your poverty, value shitting out kids over producing. really, really smart.

LOL. You keep telling yourself that. Being from E. Europe is great. Being a dyke isn't. Sorry bitchcakes.
[Previous convo re: their little Ashley getting married] Cue your parents: "Well, my little [Ball Crushing Dyke] has a great career!" Everyone smiles politely, says "that's great!" *silence* "So, is there a wedding date?"

i can imagine it now. your dad, an avid basketball fan, setup a mini-court out in the yard, and bought all the basketball gear so his little boy play. i bet you two watched the game together every week.
then, to his horror, at 4th grade tryouts it became apparent that all the normal little boys towered over you. a single tear rolled down his eye as he watched you get thrown about by all the normal 4th graders, and upon hearing that you were the only boy who didn't make the team.
poor, short, dumb little fish. i understand that you rage on xo in the night because of your misery and failure.

He isn't. PWN3D.
"then, to his horror, at 4th grade tryouts it became apparent that all the normal little boys towered over you."
Actually, I played b-ball in grade school and wasn't bad. My dad never cared and thought it distracted me from my math homework.
"i understand that you rage on xo in the night because of your misery and failure."
Your stupidity is amazing. First, where I am it isn't night, its the middle of the day. Second, why would you think my Russian mathematician dad would give a shit about basketball?

Ha, well you've still got plenty of time for all that, if that's what you want.
I do think you were being a little presumptuous with your post though. Maybe your folks care about these things, but I doubt my parents care either way whether or not I have kids. They're just thrilled my brother and I are out of the house, they get along much better now and take trips and party and stuff. I don't think grandkids are even on their radar, and I know they wouldn't want me to have kids I don't really want just so that they can keep the family growing or whatever.

and YOU get to say what's "natural" right? never mind that homosexuality is rampant in the animal kingdom, and that if it weren't natural in humans, you wouldn't have millions of people wanting to have same sex relations.
you sound like some fat, stupid christian hollering about "god's will"
