I know the general outline, but I am missing much because I wasn't there at the time.
I'm talking before the 2006-2007 build-up to the lawsuit.
What was pensive like in the earliest days? Was J. posting as a Macalester student? Was MadCat posting before she was in legal aid? Who exactly was Madame Cunt Who was Skeletor? How did GTO become Chief Education Director? What was rachmiel, an entrepreneur, doing posting on the PR board?

Yeah, I started posting under that moniker with some not so true things about me to hide my identity in case of an outing (i worked at a firm at the time).
I started posting under the GP moniker when I stopped working at the firm.

I raked in so much in those first few months that I was able to take a leave of absence from law school and travel the world, posting on my laptop from the finest hotels money could buy. I would order bottles of Cristal from room service and literally just pour them down the toilet.
Don barzini and I got up to some shit in Thailand that should have put both of us away for life. Luckily, rachmiel pulled some strings for us and we were on the private xoxo jet back to Allentown by the next morning.
When Leiter discovered how much money this site was bringing in through shady investments of Google Ad money and questionable overseas deals (primarily with groups linked to Islamic terrorism), he got the Feds involved (The details of this fiasco used to be posted prominently on this website above the thread listing). It was all pretty much downhill from there.
I suppose it all had to end sometime, though. It was quite a ride.

Do I remember the photo thread? Please.
The photo I snapped of Thea hiding in the closet trying to jam two bottles up his ass at once remains my wallpaper to this day.
My personal crowning achievement from those heady days was the time I spent four full weeks trying to track down Tubgirl in the seediest back alleys in Tokyo, armed with nothing more than a Japanese phrasebook and a tattered printout of her sprawled out in her shit tub.
It was wild; but it was all worth it when I came on here and posted a picture of the two of us recreating her famous scene in the bathroom of a five-star Tokyo hotel, "XOXOHTH" meticulously scrawled on the wall in shit. Sometimes I miss that crazy gal.

I've been thinking of setting up a charitable foundation for upkeep of his mausoleum. The funds the board set aside have apparently dried up and the last time I visited the grass was overgrown and I think there was a possum inside.

XO is a breakaway faction of an old Department of the Interior think-tank message board. The original board was a discussion forum started in 1997, and was used at the time to discuss agriculture, forest management, etc. Over time, it started pulling in people interested in college and law school admissions, because of scholarships offered by the think tank.
Then it got wild.
In-thread image and audio posts were allowed. This was done at first to share visuals on forest projects and things like that. Lots of photos and charts and graphs. But then people started posting pr0n, horse pr0n, tentacle pr0n, reams of r@ygold, 88, and all kinds of shit. It was like every time you opened a link, you were going to get a bunch of 10-year-old naked girls being assfucked with icicles made from the blood of puppies they were forced to strangle. And they were laying on top of the pile of dead puppies.
The moderator, Jeff Adams, wanted to get the board back to its orginal mission, so he banned 90% of the accounts and switched the board to a different format. There was an FBI crackdown, and about 10 regulars were arrested for r@ygold, including :D, but the charges didn't stick.
So, XO was started with the goal of getting back the freedom of the old board, but without all the sick r@ygold.

Out of the abyss came Winner who coined terms like "TTT" and "I hope this helps." He personified the elitist attitude that has come to characterize this board ever since. Then there was Sforza who was a big anti-affirmative action advocate. Posts about AA, which would without exception deteriorate into racist garbage completely dominated the board for a long time. Winner left and Bateman came along. He kind of merged the two. He was elitist and racist.
Edit: This is PR history, pre-XOXO. Edit of Edit: This belongs at the end. Not sure why I posted this in the middle.
In general, the board was a lot more racist and a lot more elitist. Few admitted they went to a non-T14 school, and those who did were ridiculed. At any given moment, at least half the active threads were racist in some way.

I have never heard of NYCFan. I haven't posted consistently or followed the PR/XOXO saga since 2002 so I've never heard of most of you. However, I believe the consensus is that Winner coined the term and by consensus I mean the contemporaneous opinion at the time the term started to appear.

Do you agree that the three I chose were the defining early posters? I thought about adding HHH. He was a very good poster, but I don't think he brought anything really new.
Date: March 4th, 2009 3:24 PM Author: Stirring bbw
Sforza and Winner for sure. I think Bateman was really from a later era than those two. I thought he was a bit gimmicky at first but really wound up defining the american psycho rich guy schtick better than anybody.
HHH was one of the first pure flaming trolls. Sforza and Winner had some substance and discussed other things.
Hoyalawya, Loretta, Atticus, and John Malin are other defining early posters. But I would list the third defining early poster as "anon." It used to be just a handful of recognizable people (and impostors) and legions of anon.
Date: March 4th, 2009 3:41 PM Author: Cobalt cuckoldry
Anon was good and Atticus was important. But Bateman was polarizing and a prolific poster. I think his contribution was the idea of a PR personality. People didn't like or dislike the poster, they liked or disliked the person. I think in today's climate he would have been outed and had his life destroyed.
Date: March 4th, 2009 9:18 PM Author: laughsome public bath main people
I first heard the term on PR in early or mid 2001.
PR was only about 75% anonymous posters, and while there were impolite discussion of AA, IQ and race, etc, they were not spammed in unrelated threads or 100's of new threads.
Other posters were not anon but would disclose plenty of personal details sufficient to out them.
Lots for admissions questions too. 3/4 of the board was probably 3.6/170 where to apply.

Sforza roasted everyone, and posted some hilarious stories. A truly gifted writer. Lots of Affirmative Action-type discussions in those days. I go back to 1998-1999.

Date: March 4th, 2009 2:53 PM Author: Dashing Abode
When the PR board switched formats there was a massive outreach via email and AIM to let people know about this place, and for the first few months the two boards were combined. It was pretty chaotic at first, with more than a few internet tough guy fights, though eventually things settled down. I think j. was out of school by then, though MadCat was still a LS student.

Why do you think the punctuation monikers protect you from a lawsuit? It's not like they are non-unique monikers. It would take like 5 minutes to cut and paste and figure out the sequence.
It's still not my full moniker, but fuck, I'm disappearing. New account for me.
EDIT: Actually, never mind. A big reason was also that it's MUCH harder for others to google for posts that you wrote, so harder to find evidence for DEFAMEPWN.
You weren't part of this conversation since the beginning so I'll paste it for you:
"most punctuation monikers started the day after the lawsuit was filed.
I was AMAZED that I wasn't named a defendant in the initial complaint (yes, with this exact account). So I didn't want to push my luck.
I think if I didn't change my account I could quite possibly have been added."
Trust me, if you were around for over 2 years, you'd definitely know the original moniker associated with this account. I've done some fucked up shit. I don't even know why I still use it.
Date: March 4th, 2009 3:44 PM Author: Stirring bbw
This still makes no sense to me. If they wanted to sue you, they could have still made the punctuation moniker a defendant and tried to track down information. It's not like it's much easier to figure out who some random guy called "The Ayatolla of RocknRollah" is versus some random guy called "...;;;;,,,....". And if you are concerned about association with an old nic, why not just abandon that nic, change it to punctuation, and then start up a new punctuation free nic? That to me seems like substantially less of a risk if that is your concern.
I guess in the end the punctuation is annoying to people who are just trying to follow a conversation thread, i.e. people who wouldn't be bothered to do any more work on figuring out which is which, but not fool-proof in disguising the link to past posts under that nic.
Well, this was done the minute I found out about the lawsuit. I didn't have time to delete all my old threads (or even find out where they were).
Our hope was that if we ALL change into dots, it'd be hard to track us down or separate us or search for threads that we wrote.
For example, even when you pasted my moniker into word, that's still not my full moniker. So if I'm named I'd just say that's not my moniker.
Besides, I was hoping (and I still think it's true) that when they ask Rachmiel for the IP of "... ......... .... . . ................. ....." he'd say he can't see such an account because my moniker is not actually displayed fully (even when pasted into word).
Anyway, that's all over with now. I don't see many dots monikers nowadays (and I don't post often anymore anyway).
Try googling threads written by me and see if you come up with anything then. I have used this account for years so all those posts would have this moniker as author.
My guess is that you won't find anything, even with "quotes".

Here, an example of a hilarious story that still cracks me up when I read it. You can't get shit like this here anymore. Hell, i'd kill for another Breaking Point.
This is a note to all of you admits who will have to fill out your medical forms this summer. Be careful what little boxes you check off.
Last summer when I was getting my checkup, I was going through the endless checklist of symptoms, and for some reason I was feeling very thorough. When I got to "blood in stool," I thought hey, a couple times I think I've had a little blood on the TP, or something like that. So I checked the box. This became the subject of a 30 minute discussion with my GP. Once I realized that he was concerned I tried to do damage control, but it was too late. No amount of "it only happened once or twice that I can remember" and "it wasn't very much" made a difference. I walked out of the office with an appointment to see a proctologist and receive something called a flexible sigmoidoscopy.
I received the information on the procedure a week or two before the proctology appointment. It was scheduled for a morning. The last solid food or colored liquid I was allowed to consume was the night before the day before the appointment--no food for 36 hours. In the afternoon the day before, I had to drink an entire bottle of magnesium citrate laxative. It tasted vile, but I figure, what the hell, a good shit wouldn't hurt me. Little did I know the demons of hell that would be shooting out of my ass an hour later. It started with gurgling, then churning, then all out projectile ass-spewing. The walls of the toilet were painted brown. My eyes watered. It lasted for almost two hours. I crawled into bed and went to sleep. The next morning, before the appointment, I had to administer two fleet enemas to myself. If you've never done this, it's quite gay. The instructions on the box have you lay on the floor of your bathroom in the fetal position, then reach around and jam the thing up your ass, then slowly squeeze all the liquid into your rectum. Let it sit for a while, then stand up and "evacuate" in the crapper. I thought the sensation of the liquid entering my anus was upsetting and uncomfortable, and the resulting watery discharge somewhat horrifying. But I had no idea what was coming later that morning.
I arrived at the office and they quickly had me in a gown and in the room where the proceedure would occur. Doctor? Chick. Nurses? Two. Both chicks. I had to lie down on my side, again in the fetal position, facing a television screen. The one nurse then put a massive quantity of KY all over and into my ass. All the while they are telling me something that I can barely hear because my brain is shutting down from the humiliation. Something about bloating or air being injected into my lower GI. Suddenly the doctor approaches and I am violated. It's a tube, probably a half an inch thick, but it felt like fucking King Dong. It has to be thick because the way it works is the end of the tube has a camera, a little jaw for taking tissue samples, a light, a water nozzle, suction, and an air nozzle. The air expands your intestine and then the light makes it all nice and visible, and then the camera puts the image of my insides on the TV four inches from my nose. Wow. Unfortunately, for whatever reason my laxative-enema combination was not administered very well, and the doctor lectured me for about five minutes on this topic while she used the water nozzle and suction to wash away residual poop from my insides. That was quite a show. And you've never had your ego bruised until you've been told that you can't even poop yourself empty right. Once I was nice and clean, she ran the tube up and down, all the while injecting more and more air into me. Eventually the gas pains were getting terrible, but I couldn't fart because she had the works plugged up. I felt like I'd eaten 40 pounds of beans. Finally, after finding nothing other than leftover shit, after 15 minutes of probing, she calls it quits. The second she pulls the tube out, I let out a gigantic fart like you have never fucking heard right at the doctor and the nurses. To their credit they didn't blink an eye. The doctor even said that was normal, and that I could go the adjoining bathroom to clean up and "get comfortable." No amount of time in that bathroom was going to make anything about this situation comfortable.
A few minutes later I had my clothes on and I was in the doctor's office. She again reminded me that I didn't do a good job of preparing (thanks), but thought that this was consistent with the symptom of blood on TP, and it was probably all due to chronic constipation. I said "I poop just fine, thanks," but she wasn't interested. She loaded me up with an armful of papers on what foods have fiber and what foods don't and she kicked me out the door.
It wasn't over. At this point I was starving. I went home and ate a huge pile of leftover pot roast from earlier in the week. I ate and ate and ate. Probably 3 pounds of the stuff, including vegetables and gravy. Turns out, something went wrong in the pot roast cooling and storage. Or maybe my body dind't react well. My body totally rejected it. I crapped and crapped for days after that, and it took almost a week before my guts were working right again.
So... all of you admits--be very very careful about what boxes you check when you get your physicals.

Date: March 4th, 2009 3:29 PM Author: irradiated dull hall Subject: a brief history of the PR era:
princeton review ran an admissions discussion board in the late '90s, early '00s. there was a college board, law board, and a parents' board (incidentally, the parents were the most depraved, socially bankrupt motherfuckers of all).
the board was moderated by a guy named Jeff Adams, a gay website administrator working for PR in NYC (www.jeffandwill.com, if you're interested in learning more about our former fearless leader). classic posters of the era on the college board included homeschooled, NYCFan (yes, even back then), kevinx, drumnark (who was a true math wizard), stokedteacozy, Joe Caltech, king stu, huggable snugglebunny, Stork Simmons (he previously posted under JHU05), plus a bunch more, and later included emmanuel kant, quaggsy, Harvard Hopeful, and a bunch of others.
highlights included the Emmanuel Kant Columbia saga, where NYCFan tried in vain to get Kant into his dream school, Columbia. Kant used to write poems about Columbia and was generally a huge prestige whore who was obsessed with civil war reenactments. he ended up getting deferred/dinged from columbia and WL'd at Harvard. went to Hopkins for a year before transferring to columbia general studies.
KevinX was a douchebag who went to vanderbilt and was generally an ass to people. he had a "girlfriend" who posted under the moniker Michelle and who claimed to be a softball player at stanford but was ultimately outted as some random chick from east LA who never went to college and had deceived KevinX for a number of years on the board. thus died the poster KevinX.
there were a couple of posters from the south (one from FL and one from GA, i think) who "met" on the board and had a LTR IRL. don't remember much more about that story.
quaggsy was a pissed-off brandeis student who once got into an epic 1,500+ post argument with King Stu over whether berkeley or stanford was the better school.
Harvard Hopeful was a self-described UES rich kid who ultimately did not get into Harvard and ended up picking Cornell over Stanford because he wanted the ivy pedigree.
There arose for awhile the "GAY HOPKINS TROLL," who had names like GUCCI GUY and PRADA GIRL and used to start threads with titles like, "HARVARD*OXFORD*YALE*JOHNS HOPKINS*PRINCETON" and posts like, "my daughter choosing between these schools for a bachelor's in 16th century spanish literature. i hear that hopkins is teh best in this specialty." from this arose the famous "THE JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY IN BALTIMORE, MASSACHUSETTS" and "JOHNS HOPKINS RICH BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE CLIQUE" memes.
soon, terroristX figured out how to hack the board and once actually made GOATSE the board background. he also started editing people's posts and generally causing havoc. Jeff Adams got pissed off and started banning people, but he still tried to salvage the growing board community. he even made a separate board on PR for the PR board presidential election and annual PR board prom.
before long, however, teh lulz became too epic for poor Jeff Adams, and he changed to format to the equivalent of an online prison, kind of like college confidential, only worse. gone was the tree format and easy-to-read red and blue text (for college and law, respectively).
enter heroes rachmiel and GTO (posters who arrived in the last couple of years of the PR era), who took the code from the old PR board and resurrected the format on xoxohth. Jeff Adams was livid and tried to unsuccessfully to get xoxo shut down. both PR and college confidential would ban anyone who mentioned xoxohth on their boards.
nonetheless, an underground recruitment push was launched (during which posters went to PR and college confidential and implored users to visit "ehks oh ehks oh eighch tee eighch dot com"). word soon spread across the realm that the old PR format had been resurrected, and xoxo slowly sprang to life.
i'm too lazy to post the rest of the story, but this is more or less how the transition went down from the perspective of the college board.

there was a poster known as "quagsasaurus" or something who posted and claimed to tbe the original quaggsy although that seemed doubtful to most people. he claimed to be from wellesley, MA even though the original quaggs was from newton.
his schtick would be to say that anyone who went to a private HS was a loser because prestigious towns like wellesley had public high schools better than most privates.
Date: March 4th, 2009 3:48 PM Author: irradiated dull hall
yeah, that's right. he posted under a number of variations of the quaggsy moniker: quaggs, quaggsy, quaggsy waggsy, quaggsasaurus, and a ton of others. my theory was always that the original quaggs flamed out rather quickly and that what most of us remember as "quaggsy" was actually just a bunch of regulars keeping the schtick going under different monikers.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. Ned Flanders was NEVER a neo-con. He was a racist paleoconservative like Pat Buchanan.
RWA was a neocon, as was Lawyerbird and a few other notables. Some mainstream conservatives like Theateaus also trolled heavily for the war initially but once the WMD proved a hoax (yes this was actually a big deal), they dropped off the bandwagon. Stabby McLawyer was actually a Republican in those days.
Mr. Plow was always a marginal figure. The important liberals of the era were fiver, glorfindel, and Euphonious. I gradually insinuated myself into that group by sheer volume of posting and irrational liberal exuberance.

By the way, am I the only one who still doesn't believe Ryan's Alexa story, and believe it was a story concocted across several message boards? Did anyone ever get any confirmation beyond the consistency?
Date: March 4th, 2009 4:48 PM Author: floppy business firm
What is it?
Though honestly I think you could provide me with Alexa's corpse and I'm not sure I'd believe it. The story was just so ridiculous and played like a Very Special Episode. He also intermittently brought it up, was unable or unwilling to share any details about her illness despite chattering on about it endlessly in all other respects, and the only picture he provided of her appeared to be cut out of a large group picture.

Why's it so hard to say your girlfriend died and then refuse to divulge details about it or yourself?
Ryan was very secretive about most everything. I don't think any of the Cornell students knew him IRL, though I remember a lot of them spotting Harvard Hopeful running around in his fur coat.
I tend to assume most things on the internet are fake until proven true. I didn't believe Hopeful had cancer (though I'm a lot less skeptical about that than I am about Ryan's story) and I didn't believe that girl who was stringing Leo along for ages. The latter was confirmed false, at least.
Date: March 5th, 2009 9:58 AM Author: floppy business firm
I remember emails to PR regulars about Alexa, but that doesn't really convince me. I still think it's part of some elaborate backstory that he concocted for himself. I just don't understand the secrecy and lack of evidence otherwise.
I had issues with the Cornell thing just because he was so stupid. I'm willing to believe he went there, though if I recall correctly, some one traced his IP address to Mountainview, CA.

Also, another old forgotten CB regs: Assmaster. Then there was the girl whose handle i'm forgetting, but went to that small liberal arts school in the northeast. totally forgetting her name, but she was really cool.

He's been mentioned above, but Sforza (the first one) was a massively-informed individual with (obviously) a lot of time on his hands.
In a break with tradition (on all the incarnations of this board), he actually adduced evidence/links to support the positions he took on various topics. He changed my mind on one or two things (e.g. previously I had thought that all racial groups had similar average IQs).
There were also some helpful people whose monikers I can't even remember now. One ended up at Penn, I think: a veteran who got a 175 LSAT (back when a 170 was still considered an exceptional score--so I've got to be remembering the PR days). Anyway, he had great advice on LSAT prep. And somebody else mentioned the vibrating wwristwatch, which I actually used on my LSAT re-take and one or two other situations (I know I used it for my Kaplan audition).
Anyway, thanks to all for bringing back some memories. Where did Barzini (aka Francis) end up--he decided against the law after getting dinged everywhere, right?
Oh, and a word that will probably stay with me for a few more decades: "turdodynamic."

Barzini pined about getting laid. In Spring of 2006 a series of posts about pwning the cunnus of a jewess (including one applying economic analysis to determine whether pursuit of said jewess was more efficient than paying for a prostitute instead) included facebook pictures of the girl. Someone contacted her and sent the xo threads her way and that's the last I heard of Barzini. His LSAT blog was pretty helpful.

yes i rember that one. its a 2n question. the right asnwer is that the author assumes that those children that get the false positive arent hurt by the treatment.
Yes, this is correct. The alternate answer might be important to consider, but is beyond the scope of the conclusion, which dealt only with genuinely autistic children.
that answer choice says, test that give false positive can be benifical but im sorry that choice is incorrect.. the unstated premise that the argument depends on is that children arent who test falsely test positive arent hurt. the author would like all childeren to have this test, but this arguement can only work if the children who have false positve arent harmed. otherwise the entire arguement falls apart. if the tests results in some children being hurt and some being helped, how could he possible reccomend it for all children. remember there was no way to tell wether the test was false until after treatment. the whole point of the test was the early treatment. if the treatment hurts some children then the test is pointless and his entire arguement becomes mute. to put it another way, the test being benifcial even if you have false positives depends upon those false positives not being hurt by the treatment. the arguement is not about the test its about the to treating all babies who are postive after taking the test.i know people think these lr's were easy but they are wrong. thanks to testmasters ive seen every lr ever given on an actual exams, and these were the hardest sections ive seen on a single exam. the questions were very tricky.
No, I'm 100% sure that that was not the correct answer. That was out of the scope of the argument. The conclusion dealt only with whether or not the test would help *autistic* children. The children with false positives are on their own.
EDIT: The answer, I just remembered, was the assumption that there was no test already developed that detected autism as early.
I agree. If I remember correctly the stimulus said that there was a new way to diagnose autism at an ealy age and concluded that now children could be diagnosed earlier and have a better chance of successful treatmet. The stimulus said nothing of prior forms of diagnoses of that this new form allowed docs to diagnose children at a younger age that existing methods of diagnosis. I said the argument rested on the fact that there weren't exisitng forms of diagnosis that allowed docs to effectives detect autism early....
I agree with your statement that the argument deals with treatment after the test. However, I think that the correct answer is that false positives can yield beneficial treatment. If you negate that by saying that false positives cannot yield beneficial treatment, then the argument falls apart because the test is then useless, as the test results in false positives.
The conclusion of the argument was about whether or not the test is beneficial to young children with autism. Its benefit is based on the fact that it detects it earlier. But if a test had already been developed that detected autism in children that young, then the new test is not in fact beneficial. It's all in the way they word the conclusion of the argument.
Hmmm. I bet you're right. My reasoning in ruling out the answer you picked was that even if there was another test that applied to children so young (e.g. negating the answer choice), the new test could still be beneficial in and of itself. That's why I went for the false positives answer. It seemed that if you negated it, the argument would then fall apart.
the wording of that was something along the lines of can you make reasonable treatment decisions if you have false positives, or something close right?
An even more simpler explanation, but its freakin trademarked, but trust me, its that the treatment doesnt cause harm to normal babies, you can show that the test being benifiacal is pretty irrelevant.
i put that tests that give false positives can still be effective. if tests that give false positives aren't effective, then the test is ineffective and will not benefit children from early diagnosis.
the answer was definately not 'there was no test that could detect autism this early before', because the question specifically qualifies the test as being an 'effective new test'. that means there could have been ineffective or less effective tests before this new test was released.
i have no idea what answer you actually put, but it is pretty clear that if you negate the false positive assumption the argument falls apart.
This would, of course, be a primary consideration in real life. However, the conclusion of the argument dealt only with autistic children. Don't confuse what the argument said with what it should have said.
I just remembered this guy; he really pissed me off. I was trying to decide between --the other prisoners who didn't get more nutrients did not also become less violent and some other one. I picked the first. That's the right answer, right? Because if the prisoners who didn't change their diets also became less violent during those months, then there would have been a cause other than nutrients. Anyone remember?
I'm not sure if this was the right answer, but I picked the same one that you did because it strengthens the causal relationship that the stimulus was trying to get at by ruling out an alternate cause. (Thanks, Testmaster's!)
Oh, yeah, that was a real one. That was the very first LR question I got (my third section). What was that answer? I think I got the right one, but it was confusing (not the flaw, but how they worded the answer choices). I think I put that the relationship between being a gray rabbit and being a rabbit is not the same as the relationship between being a suspected criminal and being a criminal. Sounds right to me.
That's the closest to the real answer choice I've seen on this thread, and I'm almost positive it's correct. It is an assumption that is REQUIRED for the conclusion to be valid. If a test that sometimes results in a false positive cannot be beneficial, then the conclusion falls apart.
sorry dottie but negating that (there is an already existing test that detects autism as early) would by no means have broken down the argument. i really don't think thats the answer.
can someone please remember the other answer choices???
I don't remember details of this test too well, but I'm almost positive that there was something in the argument that specifically tied the benefit of the new test to the fact that it could detect autism so early and that the conclusion somehow made that correlation again, in a way that made it necessary.
ok so the conclusion was something along the lines of "So, this new method of early detection proves to be beneficial to all austic children" does that sound right? i know it definitely had to do w/ austic children and not all children. ok now i think that i did in fact but the test that produces false positives can result in beneficial treatment ..because if it is negated it would be "a test that produces false positives cannot result in beneficial treatment" and that would break down the conclusion that this new method of testing is beneficial to autistic children...
Although I can't remember what I put for an answer, I don't think it was the answer relating to no test existing to detect autism as early. I think the argument was talking about a new test that is more accurate with detecting autism. They could have had earlier tests that tested positively but were not as accurate. Again, I'm having trouble remembering everything but I think this was my reasoning when I crossed that choice out.
I don't think the benefit was that it was more accurate, it just detected it early (albeit accurately, at least for those who actually had it). Since it detected the disease early, they could start treatment early. That was the benefit.
i am pretty sure that the conclusion referred to autistic children as well, and i remember picking an answer choice that when negated, casted doubt on that conclusion but i honestly cannot remember which one it is. i dont think it was test that yields negative results one though..
The answer was something like tests (not treatments...this is important) that sometimes yield inaccurate diagnoses can still be beneficial. The conclusion of the argument concerned only genuinely autistic children.
woman? that must have been experimental. mexican photographer? i had that as experimental. to refresh, the real rc was copyright, cullens, renewable energy sources, and victorian philanthropy
on the copyright passage.. main point. i think i put c, which summarized the result of the trial and not d, which said something like and it will discourage publishers from pursuing legal cases (which was not discussed in the passage)
which one is most analogous to a prof making coursepacks? choir director taking segments of songs of other choir and making a compilation tape.
on the cullens passage..which one of the following most represents his ideas on form? writing a poem within a particular form relating to death
what is the purpose of the specific references to his poems in the 2nd paragraph? i put that something like that it detailed the scope of racial themes in his poems.
which one of the following is the organization of the passage i think i put e, one that didnt start with "giving biographical data"
on the victorian philanthropy passage what do the two modern theories have in common? i think i may have put that they look at victorian philanthropists in a negative light
what was the organization of the passage, last one on rc
"what is the purpose of the specific references to his poems in the 2nd paragraph? i put that something like that it detailed the scope of racial themes in his poems"
For this one above, Did the answer or passage for this one use the word range?
Also I didn't get to the philanthropy one but do you remember the letter b for any answers?
Ldoru, regarding the question in the Countee Cullen section that asked about the reference to particular poems in the second paragraph, I think I put a different answer than yours, although I found the choice you made seductive. I'm hoping the right answer had to do with providing specific examples relating to the various points of view of the critics referenced in the paragraph. I can't remember the exact wording at all, and I'm not sure I'm right.
i found the one you chose seductive as well but in the end decided that it wasn't the purpose of the specific reference to the poems. i think it said something like to affirm the critics' claims or something..
I picked the answer that nycactor picked because in that paragraph it talked about what the critics had to say and the poems mentioned were examples of what the critics saw as flaws in Cullen's work.
i could very well stand corrected because i read through that passage fairly quickly, but i think there were three groups of theorists: the older theory, which is the one you outlined, and the two modern theories, the control theorists and the people who assumed that the state was necessarily the major source of philanthropy. i also specifically remember that the question asked what the two *modern* theories had in common..
regarding the victorian philanthropy passage, i didn't think that the first theory regarded victorian philanthropists themselves in a negative light. the first theory generally thought that they were well intentioned, but that their actions had unintended consequeences that were negative.

There were only 2 RC ?s that gave me trouble, and I can recall only one of them. It was in the passage about renewable energy sources, and it was the last question (I think) which asked something like which of the following would cast doubt on the claims made by the Dutch company.
I put "the Dutch comp. invested more in the India project than the U.S. company did in the Brazil project."
I think I remember choosing an answer saying that the government of India was heavily subsidizing the program on a temporary basis, an answer which calls into question the claim that the Dutch program will be successful on a long-term basis.
but i'm fairly positive that the answer to that one was about the indian government subsidizing the project and therefore it was able to make a profit. the argument was that a profitable renewable energy source could be developed, as in the danish case (not dutch), and could most likely remain so in the long run. if, however, the project required government funding to do so it casts doubts on its long term sustainability
shit. not what i needed to hear. maybe i need to revisit the cancellation possbility. *sigh*
i thought that was a hard question. i had it narrowed down to the one i put and the correct one. but, as %^&*ing usual, i put the wrong one. my rationale was if the Dutch pumped in lots of money, then there's less local initiative being taken as opposed to brazil.
i have to stay off this board b/c every one of the questions that gets discussed depresses me more and more
you can get *two* questions wrong and still get a 180! plus, the questions we tend to remember are those that we had trouble with, so most of the questions discussed on the board were the harder ones on the test. just because you got one question wrong doesn't mean you should cancel. don't forget all those questions you potentially got right that we aren't even bothering to discuss!
Do you guys remember the question about the philanthopy passage regarding the author's opinion? (At least I think it was that passage) Anyways, the I remember the first choice being something like "strong opposition" and the second choice being something like "cautious skepticism" and I think I ruled out the other three so I don't remember them, but I put B, the one about skepticism because A seemed too strong. Anyone remember this question more in detail?
If I'm not getting mixed up, wasn't it "cynical skepticism," instead of "cautious skepticism?" I thought the use of the word cynical was a little extreme, so I chose the strong disagreement answer (though I have to admit, I'd have been more comfortable with a cautious skepticism answer choice).
I am 97% sure the correct answer was "strong disagreement", as the author was not just skeptical of the Whig argument/theory, he strongly disagreed with it.
the author's point was to refute the assumption that the state must necessarily the provider of philanthropy (welfare state type theory) so i was pretty comfortable w/ the strong opposition one
Didn't the poems mentioned in the 2nd parragraph of the RC passage discribe critics objections to the poet. rather than provide example of the scope of racial themes?
Yes, I think only perhaps half of that paragraph dealt with Cullen's dealing with racial themes...the first part of the paragraph dealt with how he was adept at using the European style...something about the mood of a Romantic English poem? and an example was referenced that dealt with that idea, as opposed to racial issues. That's why I think the "scope of racial issues in Cullen's poetry" choice was wrong.
but, nycactor, the question was not about the 2nd paragraph itself, it was about the specific references to the poems in the 2nd paragraph! they all dealt with racial themes as did the criticism of his work. i remember finding something in the passage that alluded to his describing the scope to which he incorporated this theme.
Well, you may be right, ldoru, but I am positive that there was a supportive critic at the top of the paragraph that liked cullen's use of the European style, and there was definitely a poem referenced that was an example of that. That poem may or may not, I don't remember, have dealt with race thematically, but regardless, that was not the reason the poem was cited as an example. So I still think (but could be wrong) that the "scope of racial issues" answer was a red herring.
ok i remember that the wording of the critic answer choice just didn't seem to fit. i think it said something like "in order to further the claims of the critics" if that were the case, he didn't use the specific poem reference to further the claims of the critics. i think that is what made it wrong to me. i'm not denying the poem references had some relation to his response to the critics, though.
oh and i'm fairly positive all the poems referred to had racial themes. at the end of the paragraph he also quoted cullens or something about the use of racial themes in his poetry. then in the last paragraph he said that while he shifted more towards relgious themes, he had not fully abandoned the use of raced-related themes in his poetry.
So what about the third or fourth question in the LR section that started with the rabbits and criminals. The one with treatment X causes disease Y or something of that nature. I just remember putting that the argument had not established a conclusion between X and Y. Thoughts?
For the toothbrush study, I answered this question when I started freaking out in the args section. Was the answer that the third group only brushed 1/day?
I put the choice that dealt with .... something like that the bristles on the brush break down after a month (or something like that) because that would explain why plaque levels would be higher in the groups that got one toothbrush, or the group that had the same brush, but it was just sterilized each month.
something about decrease in beef consumption but increase in steak restaurants. conclusion was that people r ignoring dr. recommendations. flaw in reasoning ? maybe... answers?
Right. I think the answer choice was something to the effect of: It ignores the possibility that people may be following the strict dietary recommendations at home.
