When you realize that about ~15 people per class of 90 earn an A, you figure that about ~15 earned a C, and 60 students are somewhere in the very loose 174-179 area.
Sidley's cut-off was 177, which is entirely reasonable, IMO. Even the best students get median-pwnd sometimes.
Considering all that, his fabricated grades were top third material, and his real grades suggest that the guy probably didn't know how to take a law school exam. If you hit the big issues and perform sustained analysis of the facts, 177/178 is usually right around the corner (but by no means assured at a school like Chi).
The more interesting query, IMO, is this one: how did he manage to succeed for so many years at a BigLaw firm where his credentials suggest failure? Are grades unpredictive in general, or merely in his case? |
