How about this... the US would rather the current regime stay in power (or is at best indifferent) so long as they start playing ball and deny China. Dating back to Biden, there used to be a solid Russia/Iran/China backdoor around Eurasia and with Iran falling that's gone. They just completed a rail line from Russia to Iran and on to China. That's gone.
Iran was sucking ass and old guard wasn't cutting it. They were getting blown away by their Arab rivals who were building skyscrapers while they can't even get water to their cities.
Caution point... this is basic neo-neocon activity. It seems smarter and more guided but we've seen how these adventures go. Lots of unintended consequences. But don't be dumb and think party lines really matter beyond who wants a bigger cut of the pie.
