In my mind, somebody who called himself a “girl dad” was trying too hard; if a guy used the term in earnest, he must be the sort of person you’d see wearing a “The future is female” shirt, only to eventually find out he was actually a huge sleazebag toward women. It came off as corny to me whenever I’d see athletes or actors wearing shirts or hats with “Girl dad” printed on them. Literally four days before I became a dad, GQ wrote about how Bradley Cooper was walking around wearing a camo trucker hat with the term embroidered onto it. I thought, Bradley, my guy, first the prosthetic nose you rocked to play Leonard Bernstein and now this?
I’ll admit I have an irrational hater streak, and I lumped the idea of girl dads in with pickleball and people waiting in long lines for a cup of coffee because they heard about the place on TikTok; just products of our very dumb, uninspired times.
Then, to my surprise — but, apparently, not at all surprising to anybody who knows me — I became a girl dad the first time I looked at my daughter. There was nothing I could do about it, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I still don’t go around saying that I’m a “girl dad,” and I didn’t cop any merch with the term on it. But a few weeks ago, after reading a New York Times op-ed by Matthew Schmitz titled “For Democrats, the Era of the Girl Dad and Male Ally Is Over,” I found myself getting unexpectedly defensive for all the other girl dads out there, self-proclaimed or otherwise, over the talk of how California Democratic governor Gavin Newsom’s embrace of “unapologetic, some might say toxic, form of masculinity” somehow makes “the ‘girl dad’ concerned about reproductive rights … passé.” The logic seems to be that because Newsom, with his excellent hair, deep family roots in San Francisco, and obvious thirst for his party’s next presidential nomination, lets his social-media team bait conservatives on X with juvenile, Trumpian, homophobic insults that means dads can’t be really excited about making sure their daughters grow up feeling supported and loved?
