Some particularly relevant teachings:
“Love your neighbor as yourself.” — Mark 12:31. Jesus makes love of other people a central commandment.
“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” — Matthew 5:44. Even when someone is hostile toward you, Jesus rejects retaliation and hatred.
The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25–37) is especially relevant. Jesus deliberately makes a person from a group that Jews looked down upon the moral example of the story. The point is that your obligation to love isn't restricted to your own ethnic or cultural group.
“Do not judge, so that you may not be judged.” — Matthew 7:1. Broadly stereotyping Indians—or white Americans, for that matter—because of the behavior of some individuals would also violate the spirit of this teaching.
James 2:1–9 explicitly condemns showing favoritism based on social status.
Galatians 3:28 emphasizes that distinctions of ethnicity and social status do not determine people's worth before God.
And there's an important distinction: Christianity doesn't require pretending racist behavior is acceptable. Jesus repeatedly confronted hypocrisy, cruelty, and contempt very forcefully. Calling out racism can be entirely consistent with Christian teaching; what Christianity rejects is dehumanizing the person you're condemning.
So if Jesus were addressing an X feed full of racial hatred, the basic message would probably be something like:
Don't hate Indians because they're Indian. Don't hate white Americans because some white Americans are racist. Judge people by their actions, love your neighbor, reject ethnic superiority, and don't repay hatred with hatred.
The biblical idea of human dignity is also much broader than modern racial categories: “God shows no partiality” (Romans 2:11). |
