Iraq was 100x more salient as an issue motivating especially the more highly educated midterm electorate and the far left of the Dem party was 100% aligned with the centrists (after winning some contested primaries) to prioritize the war as the central focus of the race. There wasn’t this intra-party factional split it looked more like the moderates apologizing for/trying to explain away their support for the war and everyone locking arms to kick Lieberman and real war zealots out of the party.
But a real polisci shithead also knows that the progression of gerrymandering and continued geographic sorting by education among states means that we’re increasingly polarized, and therefore we only have like 35-40 seats in the House that weren’t effectively decided when the lines were drawn for the district. Senate similarly has polarized to the point where in 2006 Montana was one of the major successes for the Dems and in 2026 they are trying to force their own candidate out of the race in the hopes that an independent wins and might caucus with them. |
