War, elections, coups, intelligence, the price of oil, biglaw, banks, large institutions, markets, M&A, credit, venture, AI, 10x engineering, private equity, data… This is how you want to spend your time?

Better to make something or do something physical. Go out into the world - into your local communities - everyday and make stuff or fix stuff.

If I'm lucky I've got 18 months to build an escape hatch and get out of professional services once and for all. I'll be keeping track of my progress here.

in 24 months... hopefully $1.5mm with my house conservatively representing $1mm of that. hence the importance of pivoting starting/buying a business that, in 2 years' time, can spit out at least ~$20k/month on average. lots of potential pathways where I am based, trying to figure out which is most enduring relative to my skillset/interests and least impervious to AI/tech disruption

In one way we think a great deal too much of the atomic bomb. ‘How are we to live in an atomic age?’ I am tempted to reply: ‘Why, as you would have lived in the sixteenth century when the plague visited London almost every year, or as you would have lived in a Viking age when raiders from Scandinavia might land and cut your throat any night; or indeed, as you are already living in an age of cancer, an age of syphilis, an age of paralysis, an age of air raids, an age of railway accidents, an age of motor accidents.’

In other words, do not let us begin by exaggerating the novelty of our situation. Believe me, dear sir or madam, you and all whom you love were already sentenced to death before the atomic bomb was invented: and quite a high percentage of us were going to die in unpleasant ways. We had, indeed, one very great advantage over our ancestors—anesthetics; but we have that still. It is perfectly ridiculous to go about whimpering and drawing long faces because the scientists have added one more chance of painful and premature death to a world which already bristled with such chances and in which death itself was not a chance at all, but a certainty.

This is the first point to be made: and the first action to be taken is to pull ourselves together. If we are all going to be destroyed by an atomic bomb, let that bomb when it comes find us doing sensible and human things—praying, working, teaching, reading, listening to music, bathing the children, playing tennis, chatting to our friends over a pint and a game of darts—not huddled together like frightened sheep and thinking about bombs. They may break our bodies (a microbe can do that) but they need not dominate our minds.

no because i dont take any of those other things. you know this yet you spam this shit anyway, which is why i don't answer the "legitimate" questions you've asked hundreds of times that have already been asked and answered countless times already.

I was giving you the benefit of the doubt and being nice that your personality wasn’t this messed up naturally, that it was drug induced

poasting a cs lewis quote encouraging people to have perspective and stop fretting about the current thing when it'll always be an everpresent issue is a personality defect?

i suppose it must seem that way to a guy who is manically into the current thing and has multiple substacks dedicated to it on top of megapoasting 24/7. but if my engagement is indicative of amphetamine abuse, what does your engagement many-fold more intense say about you?

The current thing is Iran and I’m not really following it, I haven’t commented much on other recent current things (Ice Minnesota deportations, Venezuela etc). I haven’t done posts on this stuff

I already said I wasn’t commenting on your quote itt

I largely agree with this and think more people need to try this. I am also working towards "exit," but it takes time. Also everything is computer now.

having a perspective on whats really important and what to devote your energy towards doesn't mean you have to check out or exit though. its reasonable to have an informed opinion on things without fretting about it all the time.

I know what you mean. But increasingly it is such a quagmire that it is hard to care or even want to participate. I am a reasonably successful guy with a lot of autonomy, but find the nature of work today to be pretty dismal.

i hear you but the reason things are so entrenched is because so many people are checked out or overly engaged to the point of partisan tribalism. i think we have a duty to our country to be engaged if we want to be able to have an opinion at all.

that being said, i don't look down on people that check out. it is depressing and theres a million other things a person could do to impact their and their community's lives positively.

Probably have to agree to disagree. But my feeling is that people are WAY too entrenched and obsessed with everything. People checking out saps the system of oxygen. Though hoping for this to happen is about as effective as hoping Trump will stop felating Bibi.

checking out doesn't sap it of oxygen, its what enables the system to act in ways the people don't support.

but again, i don't blame individuals, after all on an individual level your impact is so minor and the issues are so massive that its unlikely you will ever have a real impact. however, if everyone did act things would change. id rather be a part of the engaged group just so i can sleep knowing whatever may come i did my part.
