My first real concert was at 27.

I grew up in a small city, it didn't have much of a live music scene. The biggest factor though, was my strict parents. There was an all ages venue that hosted a bunch of punk shows. A lot of my high school friends regularly went there. I didn't go once.

Things didn't change in undergrad because I lived at home and went to the local TTT.

Things could have changed when I moved and went to law school. But I couldn't get buy-in from my law school friends and I was afraid of going to a concert alone. Then I had very shitty grades in 1L so I dropped out and moved back home.

I'm not going to mention that because I've talked about that show on a different account.

I don't keep up with new music as much as I used to. Also, I am now sober.

Those two things are going to severely curtail my show attendance going forward.

I haven't been to a real concert since I was 22 I think. first concert I went to was Weezer when I was 12. There was a mosh pit that I got pushed into and took an elbow to the head.

It was a small local venue. I was in 6th grade but played football with mostly 8th graders. went with them.

I've come around to being on a similar page. The really great shows I've been to, I don't really sit down and reminisce about them very much. Even when listening to a great song, I don't really think a whole lot about how great it was to experience it live.

I think you do have to attend a number of shows to come around to this viewpoint.

Also, things might work out a bit differently if you're young. If my first concert had been at 16 with the band that I was a superfan of from the age of 11, that might have stood out as a really singular experience. Similar to how you remember your first kiss/sex.

i have strong and positive memories about seeing smashing pumpkins in large part bc i was really into them at that age but also bc they played he songs differently and much more animated, faster and stronger. was really cool.

that's kind of it though believe it or not and i have been to probably 100 concerts at this point

it's overrated to pay a lot of money to sit in a stadium far away from a stage to watch a jumbotron of someone lip syncing.

It's an underrated experience to see world class musicians play in a small venue for a fraction of the price of an afternoon at disneyworld.

much of my concert experience has been being very very bored and finding the whole thing tedious but having to pretend to think it's 180. Pearl Jam in particular was a "oh wow these guys fucking suck" shock moment. Phish too with their meandering 30 minute long bullshit after a 3 minute long actual song.

Going to concerts alone is underrated. I've even met friends that way. But even if I don't talk to anyone, it's fun to just get lost in the music in a sea of people.

Yeah, going to concerts alone is absolutely 180. Wish I knew that when I was young.

Being in a crowd isn't as fun now that I'm sober though.

its more fun to go with people, but I am certainly not above going to shows alone. I went to Failure last week and it was great, also I could walk around the room, look at merch, etc without having to check in with anypne
