a huge problem with sports betting corruption seems to be the focus on spread line betting.
how did it come to be that so bunch sports betting is based on the spread as opposed to a straight up bet on who wins the game with odds on each team?
is nobody interested in betting on a game with a heavy favorite where the odds about be 90/10? is it more exiting to watch a game and see if some team covers a big spread?
it just seems way more open to fraud if people are betting on meaningless spreads that dont affect the outcome of the game. it's much harder to rig games if you actually have to lose.

It was invented by the mafia to encourage more gambling and counter hometown fan homerism. One of the problems with regular win-loss odds was that homer fans in a particular city would place way too many bets for a team that was undeserving of it, which could place the bookie in a bad liquidity position because there wouldn't be enough bets on the other side. They would "lay-off" the bets in other cities to help counter this.
But point-spread betting is the best solution. It encourages people to gamble on lopsided games without taking on too much risk. It counters the homerism problem because now fans of the team could still bet that the hometown team won't cover without betting that they would lose (something they're emotionally unable to do, which fucks up the odds). It makes it a lot more efficient for the bookie.

basically. although many people do, just way fewer, thats how they can make a market in the first place.
picking up pennies in front of a steamroller doesnt satiate the gamblers impulse. and when you lose it's even more devastating. imagine how this guy felt:
